Dark Arts and a Daiquiri (The Guild Codex: Spellbound Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 5,574 ratings

When I found myself facing down the scariest black-magic felon in the city, practically daring him to abduct me, I had to wonder exactly how I ended up here.

It all started when I accidentally landed a job as a bartender—but not at a bar. At a
guild, populated by mages, sorcerers, alchemists, witches, and psychics. Good thing this lame-o human is adaptable, right?

Then my favorite guild members—three sexy, powerful, and intermittently charming mages—asked for my help. Did they want access to my encyclopedic knowledge of cocktails? Oh no. They wanted to wrap me up in a pretty ribbon and plunk me in the crosshairs of a murderous rogue to lure him out of hiding.

So that's what we did. And that's why I'm here. About to be kidnapped. Oh, and our grand plan for safely capturing said murderous rogue? Yeah, that completely fell apart about two minutes ago.

Why did I agree to this again?

The Guild Codex: Spellbound, the complete series

The Guild Codex: Spellbound

Available in Kindle, Audiobook, and Paperback!

Mages, psychics, sorcerers, druids, demons—and a human with a feisty attitude, no magic, and one last chance at gainful employment. Join Tori as she dives headfirst into the world of mythics as the human bartender of a disreputable guild in the opening series of the expansive Guild Codex world.

The Guild Codex world

Welcome to the Guild Codex

Four series, one magical world.

This expansive urban fantasy world includes four separate series: Spellbound, Demonized, Warped, and Unveiled. They can be read as standalone adventures or as one huge interwoven story, but wherever you start, you're in for a thrill ride of magic both whimsical and dangerous, fast-paced adventure and mystery, heart-warming friendships, and tantalizing slow-burn romance.

Symbol for the Spellbound series

Spellbound

When feisty redhead Tori landed a job at a sketchy pub, she had no idea she'd just joined a magic guild. And the three guys she drenched with a margarita during her first shift? Yeah, they were mages. She's about to get a crash course in the world of magic and mythics.

Hilarious and heartwarming, The Guild Codex: Spellbound is perfect for readers who enjoy sassy heroines, found family, underdogs, humorous banter, slow-burn romance, and a hidden-magic world so immersive you'll be watching for mythics on the streets.

Symbol for the Demonized series

Demonized

When shy bookworm Robin found a hellish creature imprisoned in her uncle's basement, she never intended to make a contract with the rare, deadly demon. And their contract? His protection in exchange for... cookies. There's no way that could go wrong.

Blending thrilling action with an irresistibly slow romance, The Guild Codex: Demonized is perfect for readers who enjoy heroines who grow into their strength, demons with attitude, unlikely partnerships, frequent doses of humor, and a love story spanning millennia.

Symbol for the Warped series

Warped

When psychic conman Kit is arrested, all he wants to do is escape. Instead, he finds himself partnered with by-the-books MagiPol agent Lienna and tasked with bringing down his ex-partner-in-crime. That might make escaping custody a tad more difficult.

Explore the magical FBI of the mythic world, MagiPol, in The Guild Codex: Warped alongside their most unlikely new agent. This series is perfect for readers who love off-beat heroes, pop culture, hilarity, buddy-cop stories, and wicked cool psychic powers.

Symbol for the Unveiled series

Unveiled

When ex-convict and incompetent witch Saber encounters the notorious Crystal Druid, she tries to kill him. Then she discovers a mysterious fae on a deadly rampage. Together, they have a chance to stop it—if she can resist stabbing her new ally.

Delve into the dark, dangerous world of druids in The Guild Codex: Unveiled. This series is perfect for readers who enjoy a fierce, troubled heroine, intense banter, mysterious magic, otherworldly fae, and a heart-rending second-chance romance.

A smooth, fun and very enjoyable read!
Worldbuilding was, as always, very good. All scenes and environments were detailed and clear, giving your rampant imagination enough material to go wild.

Character development was very good. As our three mages arent as prominent in this book, we got a lot of Tori's inner musings going on. We know more about how her history really shaped her, the scars it left and how her decisions are influenced by them. She has grown a lot, come more into her own, while remaining a strong, steadfast young woman that can take care of herself.
Now onto the men... while I've been on team Ezra since the beginning, I must admit I really like our new 'addition'. He is awesome! Dark, mysterious, sexy as hell... I mean, what more do you want?! I really hope we see a lot more of him in the books to come.

Pacing and flow were, again, very good. It just sucked me in and well, yeah, very smooth. Good balance between action and conversations.

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is no sex described in this instalment (if that is important to you).

All in all, I can honestly say, this series is such a pleasure to read! Book 3 is pretty much on top of my TBR pile *makes apologetic noises to all the other books waiting* Recommended!

I've read and listened to this book a couple times before. In my opinion, this book has been rather hard to read in the past and isn't my favorite out of the series. But this time, I don't know if it's because I was painting while listening to this book or because I've just not read/listened to it in a long time, but it was easier to get through this time around. I also found myself trying to figure the characters out a bit more than usual.

    *Spoilers*
The part I usually get stuck at is when Tori first arrives at the farm and argues with Morgan the witch. In the past, that scene made me cringe and rather bored, but I'm not exactly sure why. I guess it's the way Tori selfishly allowed Zak to kidnap her without even thinking about the consequences, the people she would worry, or how she would get herself out of the situation.
I don't like the interrogation scene with Zak and Tori. I do think he went a bit extreme in the way he did it and with how far his questions went. But on the other hand I can understand why he did it. After she revealed that she worked for a guild he immediately figured that she was his enemy and couldn't trust her. He didn't know what her true motives were and he had people and his farm to protect. That is one reason why he was asking about her guild and motives. I think the reason why he asked her about her past is because he wanted to know the reason for her anger and negative emotions when they first met. He had spoken to Tori about how she was different and didn't need his help like the others did, but it didn't explain the emotions she felt were very similar to the people he has picked up. So I think he was curious about her past because of that and I guess wanted to learn more about her to get a better idea of her characteristics. Also, he might have wanted to make sure she wasn't hiding anything else that could potentially harm himself or what he protects. But that is just my guess as to why he went that far.
I am curious as to why he is called a Crystal Druid. What exactly is a druid? Why are they so rare and also die at a young age? What is Gardall’kin? Is it a place or the name of a fae? Why does Zak need to live in an area where fae are at? How was he able to break into Tori's apartment? What does the word consort have to do with Zak's relationship with his familiar?
I honestly loved a lot of the moments between Zak and Tori as they made me laugh. I found it amusing how she kept commenting on how hot he was and
even accidentally telling him that. I don't ship them together as I think if they would enter into a romantic relationship, it would be very one-sided and toxic for both of them. Also, Zak is considered a wanted criminal. I can definitely see them as being good friends though, and they have interesting moments together. I did find it amusing how she kept teasing him and his reaction towards it reminded me a lot of a moment in the last book between him and a certain physic. But I also thought it was rather reckless of her to do so, especially when he kept switching between threatening and nice at a drop of a hat. I am also wondering what exactly he does that makes him a drama queen.

    *Spoilers for the next book*
I could not help but laugh when Zak mentioned and talked about doing the spell to prevent Tori from talking about himself or the farm.
    *End of book three spoilers*

It was mentioned that Zak appeared to be barely older than Kai and Aaron. So since Kai and Aaron are around 24 years old, than Zak is probably 25 or 26 years old. I'm also assuming with how Tori commented on how extremely tall he is, that he is most likely taller than the three mages.
Also, if it were me when Zak asked if she rides/wanted to ride, I would have immediately said yes as I love horses. And who wouldn't want to go horseback riding with a hot guy?
I also think that Zak's farm is probably a lot closer to the city than what Tori originally thought, as both places had the same sunny weather and it couldn't be a coincidence.
Even though I've read this book a couple of times already, I still don't fully understand just how corrupted her relationship with her father and his side of the family was. Her descriptions were like a glimpse into the situation, but not full of detail that I could completely get a grasp for her situation. I can understand the fact that he was verbally abusive, that much was clear. But did her father or any of his friends physically hurt her? Was Justin just as affected/messed up by their father as she was? Why would no one believe her?
It is a tad bit annoying how reckless she is and was a bit of a damsel in distress in this book, but she's starting to get there where she can defend herself. After her adventure at the farm, I think she understands a bit more on why being reckless is bad.

Overall, this is a good book and would recommend this series to other people.

I liked it. After getting sucked in with the first book, it was fun to see how things were happening. I HAD to know how this series was going to go though so I can easily say I was kept on my toes. I love that Tori's headstrong and takes care of herself, and I'm glad she found a family at the C&H. But these new people man....

The first book was better but just because this installment revolves around everything else that isn't the Crow and Hammer. I really loved the guild and this was a tease when the story took a different temporary turn. Still, it expanded the magical world that Tori found herself in so it was a fun adventure. A little convenient at times, filled with a bunch of fan-service I so will not complain about (I had time to get over it because um AARON XD) this book is a definite recommend for those who love Marie and fans of this type of genre. Fantastical, adventurous and fast-paced with writing that flows amazingly well with the story.

OKAY. Okay. I have to confess something.

I daresay I enjoyed this book even more than the first. How is that possible you ask?? Believe me, I didn't think such a thing even remotely imaginable either.

But all of the fun and hilarity that we were introduced to in the last book are present in this book. Maybe even more so. And the awesome band of characters that we have come to love and adore are back with a bang. PLUS the addition of a very new, very intriguing, and highly appealing character... well, I don't want to spoil any of the fun, but like I said, I loved this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Druids and dragons and fae, oh my!
Reviewed in Australia on August 18, 2020
So Tori has gotten herself into trouble again. All in the name of saving a missing teenage girl of course, she wouldn’t do something dangerous and reckless for no reason! Also her three mage friends Aaron, Ezra and Kai are almost totally to blame for this one, but they are trying to catch the most notorious rogue in the city. One needs the correct bait for such an ambitious endeavour. Of course it all goes pear-shaped immediately, leading to oodles of fun and an epic magical showdown.

I am loving this series so far, and in this one we get to see how Tori manages on her own, especially in a completely unexpected and confusing situation. This girl does not give up, she is a survivor who makes her own rules and has no fear. How is she still alive, by the way? This book just has so much cool stuff going on and I’m trying really hard to not give spoilers, so you just have to go read it, OK?!

You guys, the dialogue! If you like fun, sassy, hilarious banter, then this series is for you because it is off the charts! I don’t always relate to Tori as a character but when she loses her temper and runs her mouth off you know you’re gonna have a good time! And just look at her trying to keep secrets! Oh she’s just so bad at it - never tell this girl anything! I think the writing in this is just really clever and so well done. These books just really are so much fun to read. I mean, why haven’t I binged them all yet? Why? Don’t worry, that is next on my to-do list.

Druids and dragons and fae, oh my! Such fun and random new characters! Let’s start with everyone’s favourite: Zak. I’m still #TeamEzra but I very much enjoyed the super duper evil, murdering, child-abducting oh-so-bad guy Druid. I mean, it’s really all about the reputation isn’t it? Also he’s really hot and has awesome powers and is just the best - but can he handle little ol’ human Tori and her impulsive lack of self-preservation? I think not!

Did I say dragons? Yes, dragons. Which was an unexpected but very pleasant surprise for me. That pretty much put the cherry on the cake for this series, it really doesn’t get any better than that right? Oh my goodness the room mate! Hahahaha! I don’t want to say too much - because spoilers - but just wow! Tori has her hands full with this one! I really can’t wait to see what comes next!
