The quest for the perfect cup of coffee continues
I had great hope for this press, but it’s probably going back. Poor quality control on top of poor design. If you look at almost every French press, you know they all look basically the same. You have a flexible (sort of) screen that’s pressed down by a plunger. The screen is bent up around the edges and held against the wall of the vessel by the screen trying to flatten out because it’s slightly wider at the bend than the vessel. There’s also a spring which one assumes is pressing against the screen, helping eliminate gaps between the screen edge and vessel walls. The problem is, the screen isn’t that flexible and the very edge of it may be the only thing preventing grounds from sneaking by. All it takes is pressing a dent along the edge to cause it to fail. And that spring around the edge is certainly not strong enough to keep coffee grounds no larger than a coarse grain of sand from getting by. One would think someone would design a press with a silicone gasket around the screen to easily stop anything larger tan the screens fineness from getting into your coffee. Although maybe Aeropress is basically using that principle. But, back to this press. I’m posting photos from screenshots from the manufacturer. You can easily see that from misalignment and poor quality control, how the problem is compounded. If they could fix that, this might not be a bad press. As far as other factors, with about 30gms of coffee the level to just below the bottom of the spout is just about good to make 16oz of brew. The lid fits nicely on top, and the spout has no added screen that either would be big enough to be useless, or fine enough to create a mess trying to pour the coffee. But since the spout isn’t sealed too, the seal around the top is only useful if you have shaky hands, or are in a big rush to pour the coffee. The rubber bottom is also nice, and removable easily for cleaning. However since it seals around the base, it can be tricky to get the air to escape so it doesn’t just pop off. You could poke a hole in the rubber. But then you’d eliminate the partial vacuum created that helps keep the base in place. Not a big deal either way.I’m going to try a few more cups. See if I can find and smooth out the offending bends or dents in the screen, and try to eliminate any large particles. Note: I invested in a rather expensive grinder and use pretty fresh beans, so the amount of ‘fines’ (the inevitable dust that grinding beans creates) is minimal. I’d really like to make this press work since it is the perfect size for one nice large mug of coffee.UPDATE - After several more mugs of coffee, and a gentle push on suspect spots on the screen, I’m adding a couple of stars to my rating. I’m not seeing bits of ground anymore at the bottom of my mug and the pluses that st this item apart. They are: the nice fitting cap (even though the spout is open). It doesn’t flop around while pouring and it doesn’t have that stupid screen or slotted opening that makes you rotate the top to line up. The presses that have them add nothing and are a useless annoyance. The glass is easily separated from the base and top, so it can be used to heat water in a microwave. Lastly, this press is the perfect size for making a nice large mug of brew. They fill my 16 oz mugs and vacuum bottles just right. And since you read this far, let me add one more thing. I considered one of the larger, double wall, insulated glass presses, but realized even if it did keep the coffee hot, everything but the first cup would sit with the grounds making a second cup over brewed and bitter.Latest update (06/2019) - After daily use for awhile, I’m now subtracting a star, down to 3. For two reasons. First, and I may have mentioned this, since the carafe is short and wide, there is more surface area exposed and the brew temp will decrease quicker than a taller, narrower one would. Over the course of 4 minutes your grounds may be a floating raft on top of 175 degree water instead of submerged in 200 degree liquid. Stirring it up to get the grounds mixed in only accelerates the temperature drop. How much this matters I don’t know. It may even reduce bitterness of brewing in too hot water. The second issue is the semicircular shape of the handle. When you pick up the press to pour your coffee the shape lets it rotate easily and your fingers end up against the hot pot and starting to burn. I rest my thumb on the edge of the cover which helps a little. But if the handle was a bit more square or oval, it would prevent it from slipping so easily, solving the problem. Or I may just glue a piece of rubber under the handle to keep my finger away from the hot glass. Still makes a great mug of coffee, and the quest for perfect beans continues.
