About the author
Cara is a leading voice in puberty and adolescent health. A pediatrician, speaker and podcast host, she is a New York Times bestselling author of multiple books including The Care and Keeping of You series, with more than seven million copies in print, and the forthcoming This Is So Awkward: Modern Puberty Explained (Rodale Books, Oct 2023). Cara graduated from Harvard and John Hopkins Medical School and trained at UCSF.
When her own daughter started puberty, she realized there was no company dedicated to making this decade of life more comfortable….so she started one. When her son entered puberty, she realized that there was even less puberty content and product aimed at males… so she decided to fix that, too.

I asked this Mom to review the content of this book and decide if it was appropriate for her girls. I shared with this parent that, I was an avid reader to my two children. And I would frequently purchase books as I traveled to different locations. I read to them on a nightly basis. And, I also read to them over the phone when I stayed overnight for work. In addition I awarded my children with new Books as I traveled and I wrote the City Location that I purchased the Book and Signed each book with a special note from Dad.
I presented this book to the Mom of the two girls, to review. After her review she agreed to accept the book. I gave the mom a tool to help her young girls understand their Biological Changes they would experience while transitioning into Womanhood. The Book masterfully addressed all concerns of entering into Womanhood and what to expect. And how to address each opportunity. The book illustrated appropriately, all cultures of children and illustrated all facts. The book captured all Girls of the World and Masterfully addressed most common concerns and techniques that Young Girls must address while transitioning in to Womanhood.
These two Girls look forward to reviewing the book on a nightly basis. And the mother is excited that the Girls are so engaged in their health and wellbeing, The Mom is excited to have such a complete reference to assist in her daughters transition into Womanhood. She stated that, " I wish that I had such a complete reference when I was their age".
I wanted to write a review because some reviews stated that this book is graphic and made the adult writing the reviews uncomfortable.
I want to be clear that this book does not contain anything sexual or something that is not appropriate for a child 10-12 years old. The illustrations in the book regarding breasts and genitals are a VERY basic cartoon illustration to show anatomical parts, how to insert a tampon, and perform a breast exam. It uses no sexual words and only scientific terms.
I think it’s worth noting that any child who reads this book and sees the diagram can just as easily look in a mirror and see the same parts.
I find it highly suspect and strange that a parent would give this instructional book a negative review or be uncomfortable with their child seeing a diagram of their own body parts.
Throughout the book there are tips and advice on hygiene, maintaining friendships, having mature conversations with parents, staying healthy, not giving in peer pressure, and doing well in school in spite of the trials of puberty.
Throughout the book it encourages the reader to get guidance from trusted adults if they are confused or worried about something they don’t understand.
One important section of the book is about pressure from friends during visits and sleepovers to do things they aren’t allowed to do at home or things that are not age appropriate and it gives wonderful advice on what to do in these situations.
This book is a valuable resource for growing children and I recommend purchasing prior to puberty, especially if you already have the first Care and Keeping of You. This book is similar, it’s just more informative to a slightly older age group.
After this book I highly recommend The Period Book and the other American Girl books about self care and mental health. At this age kids are very sensitive and dealing with friendships and peer pressure and those books give very wise advice.
