Grow a garden filled with Holy Basil herbs, from freshly harvested Ocimum sanctum herb seeds. Holy Basil is known to be a sacred herb to the Hindu people. Often referred to as "Tulsi," these herbs have been consumed to improve immune health. The leaves are Anise scented and can be used in tea, or as a potpourri. Holy Basil plants will mature to a height of roughly 18 to 20 inches tall, and can spread roughly 8 to 12 inches wide. The green, scented leaves are accented with small purple flowers at the tops of each plant. These herbs can begin to be harvested in roughly 90 days.
Holy Basil is categorized as an annual flowering herb. Annuals will grow quickly from freshly harvested Ocimum sanctum seeds, displaying their scented leaves and flowers through the summer months. The leaves can be harvested and allowed to regrow. If left outside with harsh frosts, the plants will then wilt and die. Seeds can be collected from these herbs if they are allowed to bolt in the late season.

Sowing The SeedAsclepias flower seeds will need to go through a process of stratification for successful germination. Place your seed packet in the fridge for roughly 3 to 6 weeks prior to sowing. Asclepias seeds are best sown indoors, where the environmental conditions can be maintained for optimal growth. Sow in peat pots, 6 to 8 weeks prior to the last frost, at a shallow depth of 1/16” under topsoil. The seeds will require light to germinate, so it is crucial that you do not cover the seeds with much dirt. Transplant or direct sow outdoors when the weather is warm and all danger of frost has passed. |
Growing ConditionsAsclepias will enjoy an area of full sunlight for the majority of the day with temperatures of at least 70F to 85F. The soil should be rich in organic matter and also well drained. It is recommended that you combine any hard compact soil with a light fluffy compost to increase drainage. Water daily so that the seeds are kept moist until germination has occurred. |
Germination & GrowthMilkweed seeds will show signs of life within 14 to 28 days, but can take up to 40 days to successfully germinate. The plants will grow to a mature height of roughly 18 to 30 inches tall and can be spaced roughly 12 to 18 inches apart from one another. Butterfly Milkweed is a crucial food source for the Monarch Butterfly. It will also attract an array of other beneficial insects as well. |

Actually, I was looking for usual Indian variety of tulsi. It did say holy basil so I assumed it would be Rama tulsi(Scientific name: Ocimum Sanctum Common name: Light Holy Basil) or Krishna tulsi(Ocimum tenuiflorum). But, they are not. Here, holy basil is a different variety, called Kapoor tulsi( found on Google),so technically the seller is right. But, it doesn't taste or smell like usual variety at all. It smells more like clove+eucalyptus -ish. This review is for people who are actually looking for Rama tulsi or Krishna tulsi for their home. Don't be mistaken, like me, by the holy basil term . I have attached pictures of my two basil plants from these seeds(1 year old and pruned multiple times, they grow very fast) and third image shows types of tulsi(from Google search).
If you are okay with any type of tulsi, definitely go for this. It looks great and also has a strong scent of cloves which is wonderful and fills your patio garden. But if you are looking for Rama or Krishna tulsi specifically, then keep searching :)
Hope this helps !

I will just keep transplanting them individually in larger pots. Knowing the variety would have been so very helpful.
