Product Description
Drawing upon the vast knowledge and techniques of our master craftsmen, the CG series nylon string guitars were developed to deliver top-level sound quality, performance, and playability at a reasonable price. Many factors of the high-end handcrafted GC series classical guitars have been implemented to share the improved sound, playability, and cosmetic design.
From the manufacturer
Yamaha CG122MSH Solid Spruce Top Classical Guitar
CG series are created using the experience and technology gained from decades of hand crafting fine classical guitars. The series offers ten models divided into five grades making it easy to find a guitar that fits your sound and design requirements. The CG series offers rich tone with improved volume, tone quality and response, superior playability with its easy to hold neck design and comfortable string height, and elegant appearance with its simple design.
Yamaha CG122MSH is extremely affordable. The combination of the solid Spruce top and the matte finish provide the loud and warm sound. And you can feel the superb playability with the lower string action.
- Solid Spruce Top
- All Matte Finish
- Lower String Action
The new CG series features a new bracing pattern that delivers excellent response and rich resonance. These guitars also feature a bridge plate that efficiently transfers string vibration to the guitar top.
Cedar: Bright, warm tone. Excellent response with relatively thick treble. Cedar offers a mature tone with little change over time, providing a high level of perfection.
Necks utilize a strong 3-ply laminate design that resists warping and twisting. This design improves neck strength, offers greater stability against shape changes over time, and allows lower string height. In addition to providing greater neck stability, the laminated design also makes effective use of resources.
The matte finish on the back of the neck allows the left hand to move smoothly while also providing a secure grip. The finish is applied with a thin coat that contributes to improved resonance. The same matte finish is applied to the bridge for improved resonance.

I teach music to young children (6 and under) and needed an affordable instrument I could use with them (don't want to risk my expensive Martin 000-15M). This is the third guitar I purchased for this purpose. I returned the other two (yamaha c40 and cordoba c5). I liked the c40, but it had some build quality problems (lots of fret buzz, bridge buzz). This plays very like the c40 but it built much better as far as I can tell (no buzz etc). The tuner and electronics are great. Very easy to use and effective. Despite the included pickup etc. this is still a very light guitar. Very comfortable to play. Sounds great. This also has a guitar strap post on the bottom of the guitar (unlike the c40 which lacked it). I liked this much much better than the cordoba, which had great reviews but sucked in person.
My only complaints are the decorative tuners which look a bit silly, and the fact that you cannot adjust the action on this guitar (no adjustable truss rod etc.). The action is great, but still it would be nice to have that option. At $300 though, I cannot complain. This is a quality instrument that is really fun to play.
The bottom line is that I'd surely recommend this guitar for the student or for the casual around-the-house player. Good value for the price. All individual guitars are different, but I'm very pleased with the one I got. Here's hoping my niece will like it also. Xuefei Yang could use some competition.
PS
Neither Yamaha, D'Addario, nor Xuefei Yang has compensated me for this review. I wish they would, and I wish they'd contact me soon. I wouldn't mind getting a new guitar for myself. Guitarists never have enough stuff.

Compared to toy guitars or other Chinese produced crap which is not playable, this guitar could be played by an adult, altough a bit unusual due to the small frets and higher tuning.
As a bonus it is NOT made in China!
This is my first classical guitar. I've owned a 6 and a 12 string acoustic guitar for many years but haven't played much the last few years. Hit a plateau and got bored. Then every time I'd pick it up again it was short lived since my fingers weren't used to the steel string abuse! I figured this would be easier on my fingers to get back into it. Also I've been really enjoying listening to finger picking style acoustic music lately. Some incredible stuff out there in this genre.
This guitar has caused me to love playing again. It has opened up my creativity and had really given me some calm and peaceful joy. I'm learning more, having more fun and improving faster thanks to this beauty. And it is a beauty. Looks good, smells good and sound good. I love that it is natural with no thick urethane type clear coat. My Ibanez 6 string acoustic has a thick clear coat on top of the wood and while it is shiny and gives more durability I hate the skin sticking feel of it! I actually like the wood with minimal treatment like this Yamaha instead of that sticky clear coat. As you can tell I'm very impressed with this guitar and glad I followed my impulse to buy it. Thanks Yamaha.
