Iroshizuku Fountain Pen Ink

Refill your Pilot Fine Writing fountain pen with our Iroshizuku inks. The name “Iroshizuku” is a combination of the Japanese words “Iro" (coloring), expressing high standards and variation of colors, and “Shizuku" (droplet), that embodies the very image of dripping water. Each ink name derives from the expressions of beautiful Japanese natural landscapes and plants, all of which contribute to the depth of each individual hue.

    Hidden secret gift!
This is a second MR I bought. I gave it a 4 star review on the first, and this is no different. For value, this MR is a little lower than the Waterman Graduate for both price and nib performance in smoothness, but the Waterman is too slim for most hands. But wait...For people out there who are Pilot aficionados, this MR comes with a "squeeze bladder" converter that is the same size as con-20, con-40. The con-20 metal converter that is included in the E N95S is $40. People that buy the Japanese version of Elite(N95S for US version), which does not come with con-20. This fits perfectly, holding the same amount of ink, and twice that of the con-40.

    [SOME BACKGROUND]
Pilot Pens is a japanese company who are well known for their office supplies (mostly ballpoint/gel pens pen and mechanical pencils). What is probably less known is that they also excel in making eraser (yes they are great), wonderful inks and low -high end fountain pens (sometimes sold under Namiki brand). Unfortunately many of Pilot's great offerings are not available in US (or the shipping costs are too prohibitive).

This pen is a sort of new offering by Pilot (in US) as they do not have any other comparable fountain pen in this price range( the cheapest are Pilot Petit, Pilot Varsity (disposable) ( < $4), intermediate level Pilot 78 G (not available easily in US), Pilot Plumix (Calligraphy pens) and finally Pilot Knight, Pilot prera etc (price > $30)).

    [ABOUT THIS PEN]
The construction of the pen is top notch. The barrel and the cap are metal. The nib section is plastic (but still solid). The pen feels very well balanced and if you post it, it doesn't feel (uncomfortably) top heavy. I have a black pen, the color coating doesn't feel cheap (i cannot say how long it will last).

[THE NIB] The nib is steel Pilot M (so that is like Western Fine pen). It is smooth (in absolute terms) and I would rate it better than many more expensive pens (in relative terms). From the looks of it, the nib doesn't seem to be the same one as that of Varsity so pilot is providing you a genuinely new product.

[FILLING] The pen comes with a CON 20 converter and one pilot cartridge. This is a minor concern because, CON 20 is not the best converter, CON50 is a more standard converter and pilot could've included that instead (you can buy a CON 50 converter for around $5-$8 online, but that sours the deal for me). Pilot ink cartridges are available and very reasonably priced, but I think that ability to use different inks is an integral part of fountain pen usage.

In my opinion this fountain pen is an exceptional product which is worth many times more the offering price. I highly recommend it!

[UPDATE] I bought another one within a week of the first one. Yes they are that good :)

This pen is fantastic! I own two MRs of my own, and wanted to give my brother-in-law one for Christmas. He absolutely loves it! He made a point to tell me how great it is- that it writes really, really well. So now I know: it is highly giftable.

From my own experience, this pen writes beautifully. The nib is smooth, and the ink flow is reliable. It's easy to hold, balanced, and feels good in the hand. It doesn't go dry after letting it sit for a week or more- I've only had hard starts from it after a month or so, and even then, it doesn't take much coaxing.

Now, I just need to get some good paper for my brother-in-law! I personally use the HP Premium 32, but I might get him some Clairefontaine. He deserves the best!
Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2013
I tried this pen because the reviews spoke of its fine qualities and workmanship. They were correct. I also liked that it was well made of real metal. All true. The nib is closer to a fine than a medium and I like that, too. It is also one of the smoothest writing fountain pens I own, especially at this price. It would have gotten 5 stars except it is so heavy on my hand that my carpal tunnel disorder just screams with pain and tingling after a short time writing with this pen. First my middle finger goes numb, then my thumb and index finger screams. I can and do write with it for short periods when I want a neat, smooth pen, but can't take it to lecture for notes or sign papers for more than 20 minutes without feeling and wishing that my right hand would fall off. Not the pen's fault, I probably should have the recommended surgery done on my hand I know, but something to keep in mind.

This is my first fountain pen. Once I figured out how to insert the ink cartridge, I was very happy with this pen. It writes smoothly. It is yet to bleed any ink or leave any drops anywhere. It is heavy, metal, and the cap makes a satisfying *click* when you snap it on. The only thing I'm not terribly fond of is the size of the nib--medium. But that is only because I did not realize how large the writing would be, and probably should have gone with a fine point instead. It also came with a converter, in case I decide I don't want to use cartridges anymore. After a lifetime of fighting with ball points and felt tips, I finally found a pen I love to use.
Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2014
I would say that this pen writes much better than ridiculously expensive pens many times the price. It typifies the Japanese attention to detail in engineering really well made pens that are a pleasure to use. The flow is always smooth and never catches on the paper -- whether it's good paper or not! -- even though it's a steel nib. This pen in Medium nib is the perfect starter pen or everyday desk pen for people looking to use a fountain pen but scared off by the prices of some of these. I suggest Medium since Japanese pens tend to be "finer" than other manufacturers' pens, and if you write larger and / or fast, a Fine might feel sluggish.
Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2019
I know a lot of people swear by these pens, but I'm not a fan. The medium is too fine and it writes very dry for my taste. Also squeeze bladder fill mechanisms are super annoying to clean.
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2013
I got a lamy al-star weeks ago and really got into fountain pen stuff. I am satisfied with my lamy and I thought I want one more to have multiple color in my note-taking ( Damn the college classes, it's just so hard to understand)

I was thinking about getting a safari but someone on web recommend this to me. I'm so glad I bought it. The writing is so~~~~~ smooth and no skips or any issue. The nib looks good, so does the pen. However, the converter doesn't look that good, comparing to the one comes with lamy.

I really like the writing experience with this pen. It's way much better than the lamy. Some guys complained about the original nib that comes with lamy. I might buy another nib for lamy and I'll see how it goes then. But right now, I would say, this metropolitan is definitely the bang of the money.

This is a very beautiful pen by Pilot. The clip is sturdy and the body is made from good metal. The weight distribution of the pen is very balanced. And the grip is good too. The handwriting also happens to be good with this pen. The pen comes with a rubber tube for ink filling but is also compatible with the the Pilot Con 40 convertor. The nib is very smooth too. The only disadvantage is that the rubber tube is not transparent. Otherwise this pen is worth every penny. If you want an almost perfect pen at a price of 1600-1900 then this pen is the best choice. Also note that the Japanese makes things with perfection.
