Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2024
I was happy to find that the router I bought happened to be this new version. After testing it for a couple of weeks, my conclusion is that this is a pretty good deal.
As a comparison, I also bought a TP-Link AX50, a rival product in term of the tech spec (like original RAX40, it uses Intel CPU) and the price. I found that RAX40v2 is a better fit for my particular use case, so I returned that one and kept this.
Here are my observations:
1. RAX40 is a much larger device than AX50, so the heat dissipation is better. For a device that runs 24/7, this is important for longevity. I uses a small USB desk fan in the equipment cabinet to cool down my modem and router. RAX40 barely got any warm while AX50 still felt some warmth on the touch.
2. RAX40 has two antenna while AX50 has four, but I find that the former has wider signal coverage. In particular, it works much better with my Netgear EX8000 wifi extender. I need an extender to give my backyard office good wifi signal in order to work from home. With RAX40, I can reliably get 110MB/s on 5G there, whereas the signal strength fluctuates wildly with AX50, sometimes the connection could even be dropped. Granted, AX50 has better speed at close range than RAX40. However, it is more important for me to have wider coverage. The poor performance of AX50 working with my wifi extender is a deal breaker for me.
The main draw to Wifi 6 this early was the OFDMA which speeds up AC devices. With about 45 devices on the network this helps a lot when combined with MU-MIMO. I've not had the connection issues reported by multiple users The only devices that has intermittent connection issues is an old iPad Air and iPad Mini 2, both with 802.11n.
There are lots of little problems with this device but most of them from my usage are fit and finish. This includes the lack of control for combining the 2.4 and 5GHz signals (Smart Connect), continuous drop of saved device names and icons, weak VPN configuration options, and 5 out of 7 buttons on the app do virtually nothing (one even tries to sell you a support package; device list and firmware update are the only 2 that are useful). Overall these can be fixed with a firmware update.
I’m just hoping they can focus on it before they turn their attention to all the new CES products they just announced. Lots of work to do.
Update drop from 4 to 2 stars (25FEB20): The hardware stills seems good but the firmware is just poorly executed. They need to put time into it I stress of pushing out scores of different products. The way it is makes it nearly impossible to manage.
Update drop from 2 to 1 star (11MAR20): I now sorely regret this purchase. The firmware and interface are basically worthless. Just trying to mange the devices on the network takes no less than 10 steps, per device, in a browser. You can’t even manage device access by time. Oh yeah, parental controls? None at all. The phone app is pretty much worthless except to manually turn devices on and off. Now it seems that sometimes it doesn’t work, forcing me to reset the router to get the access to those devices back.
I’m now trying to figure out how to use the old router for DHCP and this one as an access point. I can then enjoy all the controls this SHOULD have from my now 7yo router and keep the speed of the AX chipset. Wish me luck.
Update can't drop any further (13JUN20): Still no updates, no granular parental control (just on or off for all), no refinement in the web browser dashboard, and no new access to the features it does have through the limited app. I think they've given up on supporting the Nighthawk router line; "just sell as many as we can while they're in stock and kick them to the curb". About a month ago I made this router an AP to the Apple Time Capsule. Even as restrictive (and old) as that router is, it is easier to use and has more useful features than this. Bonus, I get the Wifi 6 advantages without the headaches and don't notice when it disconnects without warning.
Oh goody, another update (30DEC20). So I still don’t use this as a router which is probably wise. Just used the app to check for firmware updates. “Firmware is up to date” at 1.0.3.102. Netgear website has firmware 1.0.3.106. Another “fail” by the Netgear team. Really embarrassing.
This time it is a security update (07OCT21). The iOS app is so hobbled you can’t even use it without signing into a company server and giving Netgear access to every device on your network. Then they require notifications be turned on. What next, SSN? The firmware isn’t capable of downloading the update so I had to Google the firmware update and do it manually. Still no parental controls. For the love of God, DON’T buy Nighthawk. They don’t give a crap about support. Stay away!!!
Yet another update (27NOV21). Another Netgear security vulnerability requires another update. Once again the firmware asks if you want to update it but just sits there and cycles the browser. I waited an hour and when I refreshed I was back where I started. Once again I have to Google the firmware, download it, unzip it, and tell this stupid device where to find it. This is becoming tiresome.
