'The novel has everything: an absorbing melodrama, with a supporting cast of heroes, villains and eccentrics, set in a London where vast wealth and desperate poverty live cheek-by-jowl' Jasper Rees, The Times

When Nicholas Nickleby is left penniless after his father's death, he appeals to his wealthy uncle to help him find work and to protect his mother and sister. But Ralph Nickleby proves both hard-hearted and unscrupulous, and Nicholas finds himself forced to make his own way in the world. His adventures gave Dickens the opportunity to portray an extraordinary gallery of rogues and eccentrics: Wackford Squeers, the tyrannical headmaster of Dotheboys Hall, a school for unwanted boys, the slow-witted orphan Smike, rescued by Nicholas, the pretentious Mantalinis and the gloriously theatrical Mr and Mrs Crummels and their daughter, the 'infant phenomenon'. Like many of Dickens's novels, Nicholas Nickleby is characterised by his outrage at cruelty and social injustice, but it is also a flamboyantly exuberant work, whose loose, haphazard progress harks back to the picaresque novels of Tobias Smollett and Henry Fielding. In his introduction Mark Ford compares Nicholas Nickleby to eighteenth-century picaresque novels, and examines Dickens's criticism of the 'Yorkshire schools', his social satire and use of language. This edition includes the original illustrations by 'Phiz', Dickens's original preface to the work, a chronology and a list of further reading.

About the Author

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation, but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.

Mark Ford
is currently lecturer at University College, London and writes regularly for the London Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement and the Guardian.

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

This is an excellent, third novel, by Charles Dickens. Mr. Dickens writes very lengthy novels by modern standards. They tend to explore social injustice and are laced with ironic humor. There is also occasional great emotion and pathos. Mister Dickens has the ability to make me, as a reader, identify with characters, to like some and also not like others.

This particular story is about a young man, the title character, and his family, following the death of his father. Nicholas Nickleby is a fine and honorable young man, who is a true gentleman and also possesses both moral and physical strength. He only displays the latter when necessary and appropriate, otherwise he appears to be a meek, kind, gentle spirit. After his father dies he undertakes to take care of the rest of his family. The story is about all of the characters,, the good and the miscreant, and all of the adventures and misadventures that he encounters.

As I understand it, this novel was published in a serialized format over many months. My Kindle version has, I believe, 65 chapters, some of which are quite lengthy. I read the book and listened to an audiobook narration simultaneously. The audiobook was narrated by Simon Vance. His work was excellent and added much enjoyment. I read about a chapter a day and it took about two months. Speaking for myself it was well worth it. At the same time, I am quite sure that its length will not suit the tastes of some readers.

I have read numerous works by Mr. Dickens and am now trying to read all of his worksn order. The setting is contemporary London of the author's day. This novel fits the pattern of wry humor and observations about social injustice in contemporary British society. Mr. Dickens combines a host of skills. He writes beautifully of natural scenery. He also is able, at times, to evoke great emotion. There is a scene in this novel wherein a fine young man dies. It is extremely well written and poignant. While painful, it was beautifully written and may have been my favorite part of the novel.

There is also a chapter wherein the characters stop at a public house for a night and the various guests spin tales. The chapter almost seems to be a non sequiiter. What it reminded me of, stylistically, is a Victorian era version of "The Canterbury Tales". I do not know for sure if that was the point or not.

There is also a part of the story wherein a character conceals himself in a room whilst a malevolent conspiracy is being conceived of. This was a device that Shakespeare employed at times. An example of this that comes to mind is Polonius in "Hamlet". Again, I do not know if Mr. Dickens was paying tribute to Shakespeare or not at that point.

In summary, this is a very fine novel that is of great length. When I speak to modern readers it is very clear to me that some do not wish to read something of this length. In that regard this novel will not fit all modern tastes. Speaking for myself, I enjoyed it very much and Charles Dickens has become one of my favorite authors. Thank You...

I just love Dickens. My favorites are Little Dorritt and A Tale of Two Cities, but I have yet to meet a Dickens I don't like. It recently dawned on me that somehow I had managed never to have read Nicholas Nickleby although I've seen several film adaptations and have fond memories of the Royal Shakespeare Company play from the 80s. So I ordered the book from Amazon and read it cheerfully. Already knowing the storyline didn't hurt at all since Dickens throws in so many characters, storylines, and situations that I still found surprises despite my familiarity with the basic plot. Nicholas and his sister Kate are innocent orphans who fall into hard times when they turn to their wealthy uncle Ralph for help after their father's death. Ralph is only concerned with money, and I mean that in a most literal fashion. Yet still Dickens manages to humanize Ralph in such a way that he doesn't seem cartoonish. I find the comical bits of Dickens highly enjoyable, and Nicholas Nickelby doesn't disappoint there. I love the character of John Browdie, the loud Yorkshireman with the heart of gold who becomes fast friends with Nicholas after their first inauspicious meeting. Both Nicholas and Kate are exposed to the ugly underside of human life when their uncle sends them out to earn their livings in less-than-reputable establishments. Nicholas is forced to witness child abuse at a boys' school and expected to stand idly by and protect those who profit from it, but Nicholas' firm morals and fiery temperament rise up to provide the reader with one of the most satisfying scenes of comeuppance I've ever read. Nicholas Nickleby is a classic Dickens page-turner which surprised and delighted me on every page. If you're feeling a bit disappointed with the human race, let Nicholas Nickleby restore your faith in the goodness which can indeed reside in the human heart.

Another FREE CLASSIC I'm glad I read.. As a writer of less esteem, I wouldn't dare to criticise Charles Dickens so I'm only mentioning his love for the phrase `twice or thrice` which he uses more than thrice. Actually it is a nice sounding word. AND despite the `coincidences` I would recommend this book.

Never read any Charles Dickens before, bad schooling... And dare I say it, a little too close to the bone for me... This book reminds me of childhood Christmas TV. It is easy to follow and as is the style of the times, 1800s slow paced."
