After all that, I had to think about which way I prefer. Ninja or Keurig. I always thought that I was wasting money by having to buy kcups. They are not cheap, and you get far less coffee in a box of kcups than you do in a bag of coffee for the same price. But then I realized... How much of the carafe do I actually drink? I realized I was dumping a lot of the coffee away. I don't like old coffee so I wouldn't keep it around very long. I was brewing it once a day, and using like 3-4 big scoops of coffee grounds each time (that is what the book suggests). And for what? A cup or two of coffee? I started to realize that kcups really aren't that expensive for my usage. Each box comes with 10-12 kcups. That's 10-12 cups of coffee. Then you look at a bag that comes with much more coffee. But you're using a lot more each time, and most of it (for me) goes to waste because I don't drink all of it. I don't know how long a bag of coffee lasts me but I don't imagine it lasts me much longer than a box of kcups. And then I started to think about how much more work using a regular coffee machine is compared to my Keurig. All the cleaning. All the coffee filters. All the .. did I mention cleaning? Blah, cleaning the carafe regularly, the filter holder, the frother (which works well by the way, however it is probably the "cheapest" feeling part of the machine. It's nothing special). Not to mention the brew time. My Keurig heats up and will brew a cup in probably a minute or two. And all I have to do is pop in a kcup. But the Ninja? Takes at least 3 minutes just to heat up the water. I have to fill the water every single time. And to brew, it takes at least 5 minutes I would say. Probably more. Plus cleaning time each time. I don't have to clean my Keurig every use.
Long story short, I still refer my Keurig. It's faster, easier, and less wasteful. I drink a lot of coffee, but usually not more than a cup or two at a time. But I'm reviewing the Ninja - and for what it is, a traditonal drip coffee maker, it is by far the best I have ever used. But if you're a casual coffee drinker that doesn't need the strongest cup you can make, and don't have the time or energy to dedicate to brewing and cleaning, and you're trying to decide between this and a Keurig... go with a Keurig. But might I suggest, an original Keurig. The new Keurig 2.0s are annoying, simply put. It seems they only make the cheap model of the original Keurig nowadays, but that will do the trick. If I could still purchase a new K/B60 from them, I would, but they no longer sell them, and I'm not going to pay the ridiculous price people on eBay are asking for brand new ones.
On first set up, everything appeared as every other coffee pot, open the box, pull out some tape, remove some labels / warnings, plug the thing in. Until my run of the clean cycle, then things changed a bit. Inserting white vinegar into the reservoir and selecting clean, isn't new to me, most coffee makers have needed cleaning via vinegar or coffee cleaning product at some time or other, cleaning a new pot is a habit for me at this point. Filling the reservoir with vinegar and pressing the clean button resulted in an hour long process which used about half the reservoir content by the hour countdown which is displayed per minute on the machine. After that, is quickly ran through the remaining vinegar and cleared out the reservoir. This was unexpected, the clean cycle seems to do something different than just running vinegar through the pot. It runs it slowly through the pot, not certain if the temperature is different, but it also runs quickly to clear the reservoir after it has run a one hour cycle. It seemed smarter than other coffee pots as the cleaning cycle is clearly not a brew cycle and takes much longer.
There is a pre-heat indicator, which is also a button. You can turn the pre-heat on or off by pushing the self lighting pre-heat button. Some have warned this pre-heat is a potential fire hazard, my belief is it is not. Most indicators on this pot, if not all, are indicators, the pre-heat indicator is also a push button. This is stated in the documentation, but isn't entirely clear when looking at it. As the pre-heat indicator is also a button and can be turned off, there is no danger leaving the pot on. The pot can also be turned off, but the heat plate LED indicator remains red. This may be indicating it is hot even if the unit is powered off. Which is another good feature. The pre-heat and pot should be left off if leaving for longer than a day or two as pre-heat could be a fire problem if left on assuming there is any evaporation of water within the system. However, the exact function of the pre-heat button isn't entirely clear to me. My preference is to keep pre-heat off but the coffee pot on when used daily.
Cleaning the provided copper filter is easy, as the filter has large integrated plastic handle which is fixed and on the same plane as the rim of the filter. This large size handle makes it easy to hold even if the coffee grounds are hot, there is no burning of my hand. It rinses off easily when still hot or warm. This handle is a nice feature, and is different from other copper filters which usually have a small bucket like handle which must be lifted and can cause burning if the grounds are still hot. The filter holder which is part of the pot swivels the filter (and also it's integrated handle) a bit when inserting or removing the filter. This seems to position the filter for easier loading and unloading as the handle is always pointing forward toward the user facing the pot from the counter.
The drip stop feature, seems to not only prevent coffee from dripping, but seems to halt brewing. This seems smart as if someone forgets to reopen this shut off, the pot will not overflow onto the counter. Brewing resumes after the drip lock is set to unlock. It is another unexpected smart feature. The measuring cup sits nicely on the side, but doesn't quite snap in, but stays fast without a click. At first it was hard to remove, but now it's easy. It has to be pulled perpendicular from the pot. Not clicking in is a bit annoying, but it is easy to get used to.
Brew sizes in ounces for individual cups are not listed, this is a minor issue, as it would be easier to have ounces (in the U.S. at least). The heat plate does not go on if you brew a cup, only if you brew a carafe or half carafe, so a cup will not melt due to being on a heated plate (assuming you don't just put a cup on an already hot plate without letting it cool down, check the read LED on the heat plate to be certain it isn't very hot).
The clean cycle will beep when the unit is dirty BUT will also beep if you have not re-opened the anti-drip latch. So if you stopped the machine from dripping into the pot, and restart say a cup or another pot, it won't start until you have moved the lever to open. My belief is the clean indicator and warning will signal if there is any obstruction or occlusion preventing safe water flow within the pot. I wish it had another indication other than clean, but if the clean light comes on and won't shut off, check to see if you left the anti-drip lever closed from the prior carafe. It is possible some reported failures with the clean cycle are related to a latch or lever not fully indicating closed or open to the machine. If you get a clean warning that won't clear, first check to see if the drip stop lever is set to stop water flow from the coffee filter, if so, open it. After that try pulling the various parts of the unit you would ordinarily load or unload out and re-inserting to see if that fixes it. Likely something not fully seated would cause the clean alarm to sound as well. Clean should be different from flow alarm in my opinion, but once understood it isn't that hard to figure out.
Coffee taste is better than my older coffee makers, not a connoisseur, but it is closer to McDonald's quality. This won't exactly make Starbucks quality coffee at home. Do not expect professional results with this pot, but expect better results than many comparable products.
The frother is nicer than expected and works faster than expected. It is manageable, but slightly messy. I prefer to use it with cold milk or half and half, and it is easy to use, my policy is to rinse the frother off after each frothing as it only needs a decent rinse and not a full wash. My Amazon echo can count to 30, say something like Alexa count to 30 and it will count long enough to froth about 3 to 6 ounces of cold dairy. Having a frother pitcher integrated with the unit would be nice, but some may prefer to froth milk in a cup rather than a pitcher to avoid an extra item to clean after use. Frothing time and result will vary depending on temperature and milk type. My only use of the frother has been with basic whole milk, creme or half and half. Products which substitute different oils, add sugar, or which have less than 3.5% dairy fat, have not been tested in my home at this time. They may behave similarly, but are not within my experience. Plain 3.5% whole milk seems to froth quickly, even if cold.
So I called Ninja product support and after answering all her questions, I was told that the Ninja bar was working properly for making coffee, so just clean it every 100 cups and ignore the light. As an alternative, I could try to get a refund from the vendor. (In this case Amazon.com) or since it is under a 1 year warranty, for $19.95, but the CS said that is not recommended since it will most likely fail again. So, it is clearly a defective product with a known defect that cannot be guaranteed to be fixed and my remedy is as stated above. $20 parts exchange each time the problem occurs until my warranty runs out, or just ignore the light. The product makes coffee okay, but the cup sizes are such that you cannot just walk away because you have to stop the flow on most single cups. I asked about other versions of their product and was told some have the same problem and, like this on, some do not. There is no rev level with a fix for the defect. Limited warranty does no include refund from manufacturer.
