What is the difference between piecemeal audio components and AV receiver? Receiver gives you a fast DSP (equalization, subwoofer crossover, speaker distance, room correction) and a decoder for various multichannel formats. I use this 7.2 device in 2.1 confuguration, because there is no space in my room for back speakers (stairway well), and I don't want to mess with ceiling wires. Race for more speakers in my home ended at 2.1.
Strongly suggest connecting a network cable and updating firmware on first start. Otherwise your setup might be inaccurate.
Before you start - get Android or Apple "Yamaha AV Controller" and "Yamaha AV Setup" apps. It will save you some pain. Remote control in this receiver has a multitude of buttons which will confuse you.
Insert YAPO mic and setup will start. Setup was quick and almost good. I only had to make speakers small - that's the only way to set a subwoofer crossover frequency, some ppl recommend 120Hz, as most speakers won't go lower. There is a way to go deeper with Manual setup (after auto), and tune speaker distances (mine were accurate). speaker levels (audio volume for each), even equalizer (decided to skip).
Once you setup and start playing you audio, you can choose some more subtle options - bass, treble, dialog boost (they have 3 options for dialog to confuse you even more), lipsync delay etc.
So, when I said a fast DSP, I meant it. I use my optical out from TV to Yamaha. There is no delay and no lipsync issues with doing so.
If you are a true audiophil you would know that words cannot really convey the quality of sound, because subjectively people are affected by many things, they will say that expensive receiver will sound better than inexpensive, that MP3 is infinitely worse than FLAC, but when doing a "blind tests", all these prejudices are easily destroyed. So, I will point you to objective mesurement of Yamaha receiver, not this one, but close, Yamaha rx-v781, which was done by Archimago on his blogspot (ggl it). It turned out pretty good and comparable to a decicated DAC+speaker Amp. On a subjective note, I can tell you that headphone output is pretty good, can drive some headphones up to 150 Ohm, not sure if 300 Ohm Sennheisers will be driven properly.
Wires and external PSUs are now gone, my AV cabinet is neat and empty, I have proper remote and Android remote control, my sound is pretty good. As for audiophilia - sky is the limit and certainly on a 300 budget you can do a lot worse. You are getting an integrated device which does many things right, but if you are willing to pay more (way more), then you can get cleaner DAC, much cleaner and more powerful amp etc etc
It seemed like the only thing was the box was opened once. Everything else was factory. Instructions were very easy to follow. I did not variations to make it easier, and better for me. I used optic cable and use this for connect audio only from my 4KUHD QLED Samsung. My Video HDMI's run directly from DVR and my 4K Disc player to the TV. This works well, and why not? It has 4 HDMI inputs on my TV, so I used them. The sound is flawless. My present set up. 2 front, 2 surround, a center channel, and a powered subwoofer. Easy to set up, but my big fingers had thee usal problems hooking ip my speakers. The FM and AM antenna assemblies are no issue. The microphone worked great in setting the sounds right and setup of the speakers.
So far in the first week no issue at all, sounds great. Also, you can either use WIFI or a direct link. WIFI is tougher to set up, but no different then my TV or laptops. It is much easier to just do a direct plug in, which I did.
I did link it (bluetooth) to my players, and that is neat also. I primarily still used my bluetooth/TV setup. It is just easier for me.. I have not yet figured out how Alexa can be saet up, since my Alexa Apps do not recognize it. I have not gone into it yet though.
I am not a "super expert tech master", just a guy from the seventies who remembers how to set stuff up. The main difference is setting up WIFI and such. I am also going to add two "presence" speakers to the front set, but must wait on speaker wire. Also make sure you have the right type of speaker wire. It makes it MUCH easier.
I think I got lucky so far.
UPDATED, as of 9/22 The receiver still working great and I continue to learn about it's capabilities. Pared with my 65" 4K OLED, and using 7:2 sound mode watching Football, what can I say. Then watching a Springsteen in Barcalona concert, excellent. Well satisfied with a "refurbished" unit saving over a third at the time.

Firmware update worked (unlike the Denon unit that bricked and I had to return).
