ALA Notable Book: A family is adopted by a very talented kitten in this “captivating story, told with . . . whimsical humor” by the beloved Newbery medalist (Chicago Tribune).

The Pyes are spending the summer on Fire Island when they discover a skinny, furious black kitten wearing an unusual sign around her neck. This family has some of the smartest pets around—there’s Ginger the intellectual dog, and Gracie the clever old cat—but the spirited stray named Pinky is more than smart enough to earn a place in the Pyes’ hearts. She can box with Ginger, play games with Mr. Pye, and—Rachel and Jerry can hardly believe their eyes—even type out her life story!

“Told with loving tenderness, whimsical humor, [and] suspense, it has all the special magic that is Eleanor Estes’ trademark. . . . Don’t miss it.” —
Chicago Tribune

“All the characters—animal or human—have a high old time . . . That is the appeal of the Pyes—no one of them is quite like anyone else—yet each is believable.” —
The New York Times

“Realistic and fantastic, tender and comic, but always absorbing, engaging, and chuckle-producing.” —
The Saturday Review of Literature

Still love the classic Pye family stories. Just finished reading Ginger Pye to my almost 6 year old grandson and am embarking on Pinky Pye. He asked me to read to him every day and this is a very active child. I would read at least a (loooong) chapter, which actually took quite a while. He was completely engaged and even drew some illustrations himself. I loved the experience and the story as well.

My family really enjoys all of Eleanor Estes' books. They make great read-alouds at home or selections to listen to on CD for car trips. We started with Ginger Pye, went on to Pinky Pye, then went back and read several of the Moffat novels. I think what we enjoy most is, of course, the humor--they are all funny. But it's also the cast of everyday folks living their everyday lives in smalltown America, with experiences we can all relate to. Similar to the attraction of Cleary's Henry Huggins and Ramona books. If you like those, you'll love Estes!

Pinky Pye is yet another well written book by Elenor Estes. As appealing as both the Moffats series and the infamous Ginger Pye. This title is an excellent choice for both the traditional and creative book report formats for readers of 4th through 6th grades. If you love animals, and a solid story line of sibling relationship, this book is for you! Besides, where else could you read about a typewriting cat!

In her later books, Estes develops a unique way of writing that chimes wonderfully with a child's approach to language, lots of repetition, but always with variety, lots of in-jokes that develop through the book, strongly differentiated characters.
In this book she adds an engaging and entirely believable personification of the cat psyche, in the character of the kitten, Pinkly.
Highly recommended.
