After Charlotte Mason died in 1923, the PNEU held a memorial service in her honor, though (quite appropriately) it more resembled an educational conference. Dozens of friends, acquaintances, admirers, students and fellow educators attended the event. Those who had spent years observing her life and work warmly described her impact on their own lives and careers. These sentiments—some philosophical, some personal—were recorded in the book you are now holding. In Memoriam is biography, memoir and philosophical commentary all in one. It offers the most intimate look at Charlotte Mason from those who knew and loved her best. As you read their touching words, you will come to appreciate the tremendous impact of this gifted woman whose philosophy and method of self-education transformed generations of teachers, parents and students—not only in her life but in her death, as well.

First of all, thank you to Afterthoughts Books for providing "In Memoriam" in print. The formatting and font chosen are well done. A Kindle version is also available, and with the MatchBook program (1.99 Kindle when you purchase the paperback), I now own two copies of this excellent book.

The description tells you that this is a compilation of tributes to Mason, but I found myself getting to know this woman more than any regular biography I've read of others. The first two articles are talks she gave at a conference in the year before her death. What follows are newspaper articles, talks given at the memorial service, letters sent describing their relationship with Miss Mason, her habits, her ways of dealing with those around her. These memories are from colleagues and former students, parents, neighbors, and even her carriage driver! They consistently show a woman that lived out the principles that she advocated.

I cannot too highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about and using the Charlotte Mason philosophy --- whether in schooling, parenting, or just plain being a decent human being. It inspired me to continue in the philosophical path I have followed since being introduced to Miss Mason twelve years ago. To know that she practiced what she preached, as witnessed by people from all "ranks", from a carriage driver to Sir this and Lady that, instills even more the validity of the philosophy.

As it's title clearly indicates, this lovely volume is a compilation of memories and reflections about Charlotte Mason, whose philosophy of education continues to give life to children around the world to this very day. Reading their thoughts is like getting to know this educational giant a little more intimately, and is an absolute delight to read for those of us who esteem Charlotte Mason and attempt to implement her philosophy to the best of our abilities in our schools. The formatting and look of this lovely volume is the perfect addition to my bookshelf and I know that it will be a book that I return to again and again.

This is such an inspiring record of the many tributes that were given to Charlotte Mason. I only hope that half of what was said (in sincerity I’m sure) about this remarkable woman may be said of me when I pass away.

While not a book about Miss Mason's life or about her method of education specifically, I learned so much more about Miss Mason and so much more about her method of education as I read this book. It is a worthwhile read for those wanting to know more (after you have read her 6 Volumes!).

I thought this was going to be about Charlotte Mason's life, but it was literally just a compilation of people talking about her. Nothing by biographical, just people praising her character. Utterly boring.

This book is a treat for anyone inspired by the educational philosophy of Charlotte Mason. It collects tributes written after her death by those that knew her: children enrolled in her correspondence schools and their parents, friends, ex-students, other great thinkers of her time, staff, neighbors, school examiners, headmasters, and more. The essays are touching and shed fresh light on her princples, practices, and life. I felt as I was reading that her character and her methods had been enfleshed for me in a new way. I highly recommend!

I have had this title on my Kindle for some time but to have it in a lovely bound paperback is truly a gift! Thank you Brandy Vencel for this work which gives us a delightful glimpse into read lives touched by Miss Mason. Through these glimpses we see her genius, her wisdom, and the applications for us today as we attempt to recover true classical education utilizing the Mason philosophy.
