Author-illustrator Jeffrey Brown takes readers to a middle school in a galaxy far, far away.... in this first volume of the New York Times Bestselling series!

This incredible, original story captures all of the humor, awkwardness, fun, and frustrations of middle school -- all told through one boy's comics, journal entries, letters, doodles, and newspaper clippings. The setting? A galaxy far, far away...Roan's one dream is to leave home and attend Pilot Academy like his older brother, father, and grandfather. But just as Roan is mysteriously denied entrance to Pilot School, he is invited to attend Jedi Academy -- a school that he didn't apply to and only recruits children when they are just a few years old. That is, until now...This inventive novel follows Roan's first year at Jedi Academy where, under the tutelage of Master Yoda, he learns that he possesses more strength and potential than he could have ever dreamed. Oh, and he learns other important things too -- like how to make a baking soda volcano, fence with a lightsaber, slow dance with a girl, and lift boulders with the Force.

Jeffrey Brown is the best selling author and illustrator of the middle grade Jedi Academy series as well as the Darth Vader and Son series. When he was a kid, Jeffrey always dreamed of growing up to draw comics and make books for a living - and now he’s living that dream! Jeffrey has written a number of autobiographical books for adults, humorous graphic novels about cats, and parodies like Incredible Change-Bots. His middle grade series Lucy & Andy Neanderthal was 40,000 years in the making, telling the story of a kid sister and brother living in the Stone Age, along with real research into life in prehistoric times. He also paid tribute to all the great teachers he's had with the picture book My Teacher Is A Robot.

Currently, Jeffrey is blasting off into space with his new middle grade series, Space-Time! The first book, Once Upon A Space-Time!, follows Petra and Jide, two human kids who get to take a trip to Mars, where they meet aliens and robots - and get ready for a galactic adventure with minimal adult supervision!

Each volume of Space-Time! will also include an all new Lucy & Andy Neanderthal short story!

It's been a struggle trying to find something to interest our 8 year old in reading. After his teacher suggested we get him a graphic novel, I happened upon this and was excited to find him something Star Wars related (we eat, breathe and bleed Star Wars in this house). The day we got it he read the whole thing, and asked if there were any others like it. Needless to say, I was happy to hear this. We have since bought the second one (which he also finished in a day) and I have both the third and the interactive journal saved in my cart ready to purchase.
The story line is engaging to his age range, and appropriate for his grade level of reading (he is going into third grade). There are a few things that I personally as his mama wish wasn't in there (ie someone calling someone stupid, a 'love' interest etc) but we are more conservative in those areas than most. I'm still happy with these in general though. I was NOT a fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I didn't care for the main protagonist's attitude. These, I think, are far superior both visually and in content, and I would recommend them to a friend.

If you are a Star Wars fan or ever gone to school, Star Wars: Jedi Academy is the sort of book that would surely put a smile on your face. In Star Wars: Jedi Academy, Brown departs from his previous installments to tells us the story of a boy called Roan as he enters middle school in the fictional universe of Star Wars.

The book is written in the fashion of a comic book. If you look at the cartoon on the cover of the book, you know what to expect. Sans colors since the cartoons are black and white. However, Brown masterfully interlaces pages from Roan's personal diary to give us an insight to Roan's mind and other notes such as letters and pages from the Padawan Observer to flesh out the Roan's world.

This style of story telling quickly grew on me. By page 15 I was already feeling Roan's disillusion, but by page 17 I was super elated when Roan received his acceptance letter to the Jedi Academy, even as I knew it was going to happen since it's the tittle of the book after all.

Overall, the story works because one could easily relate to Roan's troubles regardless of the universe they happen. That they happen in the Star Wars' Universe, its just a plus for us, Star Wars fans.

I could easily recommend this book for Star Wars fans and, frankly, for anyone who wants a light heart chuckle. On top of that, this is a book that you could easily pass to your little ones as they start to read. A great introduction to comic books and Star Wars, with a great morale too.

"Star Wars Jedi Academy" by Jeffrey Brown is a great way to introduce Star Wars to the younger generation. My husband (a HUGE Star Wars fan) and our five year old son LOVE to read this book together. The author writes in a humorous and engaging style - giving older Star Wars fans enough relatable material but also keeping it fresh and fun for young new fans. The book is written with a combination of traditional graphic novel style pages along with personal journal entries from the main character.

I will not bore you with a summary of the book (it's clearly listed on the Amazon page and the numerous other reviews) but I will HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to any Star Wars fan or those just looking for a good, clean fun middle school read. Jeffrey Brown has expertly captured the fun, awkwardness, frustrations and humor that come with the school-age years. Can't wait to get the next book in the series!

My son (6 years old last month) read this on his kindle. He is homeschooled and usually balks at the idea of reading. So typically I either let him choose his books for casual reading time or I pick books that have subject matter I think he will enjoy. The latter is how he came to read this one. He was completely engrossed despite stubbornly telling me the book was "just okay". When I told him that he could stop when he wanted, he told me he wanted to keep reading and continued. He finished the book by the end of that week. He has read many books but this was his longest, and based on my observations, his most enjoyable. So on that front the author did a remarkable job. I will remember this book as the one who got my son to say "I like reading now". When I got him the hardcover for the sequel shouted out a resounding "YES!".

As I type this, after handing over part 2 to him 15 minutes ago, he is cuddled up with his dog reading. He did have a complaint though which counts for half of the star removal. He wants all of the pictures to be in color. I know this book is not targeted towards his age group, the draw back of his advanced reading abilities is that chapter books don't typically have pictures. It's a bonus that this one does at all! But I agree, if you would have pictures, make them color in hardcover. Especially at this price point, which is what I spend on my own books that are at least 2-3 times as long pagewise.

Which brings me to the other half star, you can't put a price on capturing the interest of my child and introducing him to the JOY in reading a book. Even with that in mind I think the price is a bit steep. I think for a kids book $5 would be a bit more reasonable, maybe $6. That is what prevented me from getting it in hardcover for this one, since the kindle version was $3. But now I will buy it anyway so he has the full set! I wonder if I could get a discount towards purchase of a physical copy...

Thank you Mr. Brown for this series which allows my son to read star wars at his reading level without the inappropriate for his age subject matter. Please continue to write books that he can read!
