Suncast Doghouse — Made in the USA
I own a Suncast garden bench with storage that has held up well in my desert climate. Having had a good experience with that product, I purchased the smaller version of this Suncast doghouse, which is said to be appropriate for dogs up to 70lbs. Upon our dog's arrival home from a shelter recently, I realized she was a bit too big at 65lbs to fit comfortably (not impossible but tight) in that model. What's more, the smaller doghouse had a defect in the roof wherein it did not assemble correctly. (Gaps formed at the apex between two adjoining roof panels, which would allowed rainwater to enter.) The company was good about sending me a replacement roof in a comically-sized (enormous!) box but that roof replacement was even worse (warped). As a result, I opted for an exchange via Amazon for this model. This dog house provides more room and seems to be more sturdy overall. This doghouse includes stick-on letters that you can affix to the entry to spell out your dog's name. Upon assembling this doghouse in the garage, our newly-adopted dog decided to help herself to the interior right away (no fear of going inside unlike our late dog who could not stand her doghouse).One downside is that these Suncast doghouses do not come with a fitted liner for the floor (floor dimension is ~35"x28" on this model). It would have been a nice touch if an insulated pad were included since crate pads and dog beds in this size are difficult to find (most of the large dog bed sizes are too long on the length and short on the width). As a workaround, I plan to add a furniture blanket to improve padding and insulation.I do not plan to leave my dog outside much — certainly never overnight since I live too close to coyotes, bobcats and other wildlife — but having a shelter for her is nonetheless appropriate. This model is attractive and will likely withstand the harsh elements better than a wood dog house. (What's more, wood also tends to attract more spiders than plastic in my experience.) This Suncast doghouse will also be easier to clean than its wood counterparts thanks to the fact that it is plastic. Having installed it in a location that receives afternoon shade, I expect it to last many years.
