500 Million Motherboards Sold
- In 2014, during its 25th year in business, ASUS sold its 500 millionth motherboard, solidfying its place in history. ASUS Motherboards proudly exemplify the 'Best' design philosophy: Breakthrough technology, Easy Setup, Stable operation and Trusted reputation.
ROG Maximus VIII Gene
MicroATX Z170 Motherboard.
- Performing beyond its form factor, the microATX MAXIMUS VIII GENE pulls no punches and is the perfect foundation for your enthusiast-grade Z170 gaming desktop, complete with new-to-ROG 5-Way Optimization and fully reinvented SupremeFX 2015 for an unprecedented audio experience in an integrated solution.
5-Way Optimization
Fan Xpert 3: Dedicated Water Pump Header
- In addition to all 4-pin headers supporting PWM & DC control, self-contained and custom water cooling systems now have a dedicated header to connect to that provides the required 1A of power for both DC- or PWM-controlled pumps without having to sacrifice a CPU fan header.
Media-acclaimed UEFI BIOS
With each generation, ROG UEFI evolves to simultenaously become easier-to-use and robust in its feature set, and Z170 is no exception. EZ Flash 3 enables updates from the internet directly within UEFI, without needing to enter Windows. The EZ Tuning wizard allows builders to quickly overclock or create RAID arrays via a simple step-by-step guided process. For the enthusiasts, a pre-populated My Favorites tab provides quick access to commonly accessed settings and the ability to customize beyond that. And of course, all the settings in their full granular glory are maintained on Maximus VIII.
New to ROG, 5-Way Optimization performs a variety of system tuning procedures through a single click
1. Turbo Processing Unit (TPU) with Auto Tuning is able to automatically overclock the CPU to 95% of its potential maximum frequency, with an exhaustive stress-testing routine to ensure stable operation.
2. Energy Processing Unit (EPU) automatically adjusts power consumption according to the PC's needs, going as far as shutting down unused extra I/O controllers and graphics cards' power levels when unused.
3. Fan Xpert 3 is an advanced combination of hardware and software that can automatically calibrate PWM (on all 4-pin fan headers) or DC fans in the system for the right combination of cool and quiet.
4. Extreme Engine DIGI+ fully complies with Intel IMVP8 specifications to ensure stable digital power delivery to increase OC potential, enhance system stability and improve power efficiency.
5. Turbo App allows for customized overclocking, cooling, network prioritization and audio profiles to be applied automatically on a by-application basis, making transitioning from gaming to watching a movie seamless.

USB 3.1, Two WaysWith both Type A and Type C USB 3.1 ports onboard, the MAXIMUS VIII GENE is capable of handling current USB 3.1 devices, as well as up-and-coming devices. What's more, ASUS USB 3.1 performance can take advantage of USB 3.1 Boost, pushing transfer speeds even higher than competitors' offerings. |
Intel Ethernet for No-lag GamingDemand more from the wire with ROG networking. With Intel I219-V Gigabit LAN as the foundation, wired connections inherently enjoy higher throughput and lower CPU overhead compared to alternatives. On the software side, ROG GameFirst advanced packet prioritization software ensures your game gets the bandwidth it deserves to minimize ping times. And because the longevity of your ethernet port is perhaps the last thing you want to worry about, LANGuard hardware-level safeguards for both ESD and surge protection so you can focus on your game and worry only about K/D. |
Faster Storage by DesignThose looking to adopt speedy PCIe M.2 x4 will be happy to find the onboard slot supports 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 lengths of drives, ready for larger capacity M.2 drives. For those that must have the fastest speed at any cost, the MAXIMUS VIII GENE offers several options for PCIe RAID: the onboard PCIe M.2 slot can be combined with another M.2 via the Hyper M.2 x4 add-on card (sold separately) or a PCIe NVMe drive. Alternatively, the M.2 slot can be adapted to U.2 via the ASUS Hyper Kit (sold separately) and then combined with a PCIe NVMe drive. |

- HIGH end components: M.2, can SLI, Gigabit Intel LAN, 7.1 Channel audio with optical out, multiple video out options, USB 3.0 and even 3.1! Comes with RAMDISK and RAMCACHE software, really recommend both to boost to insane performance. At least use the RamCache!
- You could run this as a media center PC with just a processor, a stick of ram, a stick of a hard drive (M.2), a tiny case, and be good to go. No video card needed or any cables (other than power). Suggest PCI-E M.2 if you want insane speeds.
- This is made for overclocking and performance. XMP 2.0 works well. No fussing with ram settings.
- Overclocks very well! It took my i7 6700K to 4.8Ghz with a mild bump in voltage to 1.36V. It was this easy: In the bios, I went to the Extreme settings, then selected and loaded the Gamer OC and then only changed the voltage DOWN from the automatically selected 1.425 volts in the gamer OC profile and dropeed it to 1.36v to keep temps down. (This is the problem with many people's OC, too much voltage = too hot processor = failed stress testing. You only want to use the minimal voltage to get it to boot into windows then a tiny bump to get stability). With XMP, no more fussing with the ram settings- Hurray! Keep in mind, I probably lucked out with my processor, so please refrain from asking me OC questions! I did buy the processor from Amazon last week if that helps!
- M.2 slot works super fast. I do suggest springing for 512GB as the 256GB is already over half full with the OS, Office, and 1 game. I didn't even know what an M.2 slot was until I looked it up when purchasing this board. Glad I did, it is faster than an Intel 850 SSD and the slot itself is future proof. Also again suggest PCI-E. I went with SATA M.2 and regret it a little.
- Looks wicked with default red LEDs, which apparently you can change to other colors (I haven't tried, I like the red).
Cons:
- Very tight fit of the processor cooler to the closest ram slot, which is used when all 4 slots are populated. Not really an issue if only using 2 sticks, but I used 4 for 32GB of ram. Wish I could find a 64 GB kit for this at a reasonable cost for the RamDisk, but 32 GB will have to suffice for now. For the cooler, I used the Arctic Freezer 13 CO, HIGHLY recommend it. It keeps the processor super cool, is quiet, and inexpensive. It allowed 4 sticks of ram with heat spreaders. I had to cut a few fins to allow the cables for the DVD drive to fit (see pic).
- May cause issues with fit in some cases if you want to use the DVD drive (Silverstone GD09B in my case).
- I don't get near 6GB/s with my Samsung M.2, just about 540 Read and 520 Mb/s write. But if you use RamDrive, it jumps to around 10GB/s. Unfortunately a lot of games are large and don't fit on the RamDisk (limited by the amount of ram you have minus 4 to 8 GB for OS and system ram use )
Conclusion: Helped my Skylake i7 6700K run at 4.8GHz!! Super easy bios changes with preinstalled presets that actually work! I tried the AI suite, and that gave me a lower OC, but it was easily stable. Great for noobs.

The Second Motherboard booted up but kept giving me an Error code of 55-which means a memory issue
This is the same memory that worked on my first motherboard that I purchased two years ago.
so, I started to diagnose the unit step by step
1) I install different memory (no Good)
2) Reseated the Processor & Fan Twice (No Good)
3) Took Everything out and reinstalled all units one at a time (No Good)
4) I used one memory slot at a time (No Good)
5) Check the Internet for similar problems with other people, many other people were having the same issue (CODE 55 seem to be an issue with this motherboard)
I do not want a refund or replacement; keep the money I spend far too much time dealing with this that I have done so many builds before with no issues at all.
It seems to me whoever is testing these products is doing a poor job, in closing I can say that I gave it my best & sincere effort to make this work, I will no longer purchase product from your company.

Thank You

The on board lights are not as bright as I thought, which is a good thing, they glow with a classy edge to them, I will be buying another ASUS board for my next build.
