Product Description
Scenes From A Memory is Dream Theater's first studio album in two years and the epic masterpiece fans have been waiting for. This album features a special, tantalizing focus that die-hard fans have been demanding for years. Scenes From A Memory shows the band to be in top form, wrapping their superb musicianship around a set of smart, accessible, solidly crafted rock.

Progressive rock has long been the most devalued currency in popular music, perhaps due to the culture's dumbing down, too many conceptually knotted triple-albums, or merely a Greek chorus of critics parroting the emperor from Amadeus: "Too many notes!" Maybe that's what makes Dream Theater's Scenes such an audacious rush (no pun intended). Here we have a two-act murder mystery examined from a hypnotic dream state and parlayed by "The Orchestra," as the band refers to itself here. Andrew Lloyd Webber hasn't written anything as focused--or musically audacious--in decades. And if the band attacks feverish shift meters and plows through enough structural modes and, yes, notes, to make the aforementioned emperor's head spin, they manage to keep things concise, focused, and largely effective. The addition of keyboardist Jordan Rudess has freshened the band's tack, infused now with the odd, playful ragtime piano quote and sitar sample. Vocalist James Labrie, meanwhile, amply proves that Queensryche's Geoff Tate isn't the only drama queen in prog metal. --Jerry McCulley

I would not consider myself a serious fan of DT. I have had I&W since its release and have always enjoyed it. However, it has always been one that would come out for a month or two and then get put away again for an extended period of time. A couple of years ago, I stumbled on a review of Change of Seasons and decided to pick it up. In the process, I also became curious about Scenes from a Memory. After some time finding it very difficult to put Change down (their interpretation of several pieces of familiar music is very impressive as is the title track), I decided to venture over to this disc as well.
Put simply, I have been unable to put this one away! For all the discussion around how this is great prog metal (this is prog metal at its best), this disc is so much more! This album delivers like repeat readings of a great book (Lord of the Rings, Dune, for example). Every listen brings a new feeling and a new meaning to some small portion of each and every song; a feeling or meaning that you did not hear the time before. Every time the album ends, you find yourself wondering if there was some other detail that you missed even though you swear you caught it all the last time you listened to it. Very few novels deliver like this disc does!
I have always enjoyed some of the better concept albums (PF's The Wall, QR's Operation: Mindcrime, Alan Parson's Tales of Mystery to name three). This is, overall, the best concept album I have ever experienced for the following reasons; a) the story line is clear, but not direct. It requires the listener's mind to be engaged, b) the music almost always seems to play directly into the story; the music never seems to be an "extra" outside the story, c)the songs/scenes flow together better than most plays and shows I have seen and better than any other album I have heard, and d) even the minute details bring meaning and value to the story. In short, you tend to find yourself wondering who has been hypnotised, Nickolas or you! Are those his dreams/memories or yours?
Since there are so many other reviews which go into much better detail than I will regarding technical ability and performance, I will limit my comments regarding the "orchestra" to just this one; the album is so engaging, only the best musical talent playing at the top of their game could have pulled this off this well.
This is an impressive outing for the band and is a bright reminder of just what rock is capable of when given over to the right hands with the right motivation! Of course, you will never hear this on radio, there isn't a DJ or station manager in the country with enough patience to play this one all the way through, which is really the best way to listen to it. Playing this in parts (as I tend to do while driving back and forth to work) will leave you frustrated or late to work (sitting in the parking lot listening to the rest of it)!
Through all of this, I have only one complaint...WHY DIDN'T I DISCOVER THIS 7 OR 8 YEARS AGO?!!!
Thank for your expedience in getting this to me!!! I highly recommend this seller to anyone looking for any thing in as good of condition as this used CD!!!
Thank you Andrew!!!
Metropolis Part 2 is a progressive metal rock opera that is structured as a single cohesive piece of music in 2 acts that are further divided into smaller scenes. It is like opera not just because it tells a story but also because the instrumental sections reinforce that story with musical themes that reoccur throughout the entire piece. Musically, it is similar to the title track of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence; anyone who liked that should like this album too. But while SDoIT was like a collection of thematically linked short stories, this album is more like a novel, telling a single story that spans 77 minutes. Fans who only know the harder-edged Dream Theater sound of Octavarium and Systematic Chaos might miss the raw intensity of those albums, but I think you'll end up liking this album as long as you give it a fair listen and some time to grow on you.
The story itself is very interesting, there are lots of good melodies, and the singling and instrumentals are all outstanding. While some might find the story confusing, you can find clarification about what it all means on Wikipedia. I highly recommend this album both to current Dream Theater fans and to people who like Rush or any of the other groups I mentioned above.

02. Overture 1928.
04. Through my words: con ésta vuelvo a dormir un dulce sueño, y se siente una obvia transición hacia algo desconocido... impresionante inicio para lo que viene después
Uff
06. Beyond this life: considero a esta canción un noticiero espeluznante de la historia, mantiene la majestuosidad y potencia con la que viene desde la anterior canción a modo de inercia pero manteniendo una individualidad fantástica, el final es impresionante, qué velocidad de ejecución y coordinación entre Petrucci y Rudess.
09. Dance of Eternity.
