Product Description

Cloves are the immature unopened flower buds of a tropical tree. The large end of the clove is the four-pointed flower bud. Bouquet: Warm, pungent and aromatic Flavour: Sweetly pungent, astringent and strongly aromatic. Culinary Uses: Cloves can easily overpower a dish, particularly when ground, so only a few need be used. Whole cloves are often used to “stud” hams and pork, pushing the tapered end into the meat like a nail. A studded onion is frequently used to impart an elusive character to courts-bouillons, stocks and soups. Cloves are often used to enhance the flavour of game, especially venison, wild boar and hare. They are used in a number of spice mixtures including ras el hanout, curry powders, mulling spices and pickling spices. Cloves also figure in the flavour of Worcestershire sauce. They enjoy much popularity in North Africa and the Middle East where they are generally used for meat dishes, though rice is often aromatized with a few cloves. Clove oil still is an active ingredient in several mouthwash products and a number of over-the-counter toothache pain-relief preparations.

I find that I'd have to replace them every couple months. But I love how they smell and I love that they're green and natural. I haven't gotten to the bottom so I can't say for sure but, most don't have the clove top them. Cloves are also wonderful for sore throats! A good deal on an expensive spice

Although I like the taste of cloves, I don't usually use a lot of them. This is one of those spices where a little goes a long way. But recently I decided to make a clove studded orange pomander ball. This is where you take a fresh orange and stick the cloves into it at their pointy ends so you just have the blossom part showing on the outside of the orange. (You can use a pin or toothpick to start the hole.) You insert them very close together. The fragrance is amazing with the cloves and the oil from orange skin combined. When the orange eventually dries out after a couple weeks and shrivels, you still have that fragrance for a very long time, like years. One of my earliest memories was one of these that my grandmother had. It had a lavender colored ribbon wrapped around it and she hung it from a hanger on her dressing room mirror. Every time I went to see her I wanted her to take it down so I could smell it. I loved that fragrance! Even now, when I smell cloves I think of her and that pomander ball.

So, I started with Mccormick Cloves, Ground, 0.9-Ounce which contained less than an ounce of cloves and cost $5 at a local grocery store. I thought it might be enough, but it only was enough to cover about 2/3 of a medium sized orange. So I came here to Amazon and found these cloves which are a much better deal. The quality was the same as the other brand, as far as I could see and they were clean and packaged in a clear bag as shown in the photo here.

Now I'll have to make some more pomanderballs, maybe with lemons or limes this time to use up most of these cloves. I may add some to tea or in an Indian curry. Or maybe I'll make some spiced cookies.They also make the house smell good if you boil just a few in some water with some lemon or orange peel added.

I used these to mix with pipe tobacco to create a clove pipe tobacco and it actually works. You just have to place the cloves in the oven for a few minutes and use a 2/3 mixture of cloves to tobacco. I crushed the cloves with a mortar and pestol until they were a course grainy powder and mixed with the tobacco, and it leaves the tobacco with a sweet, delicious taste that lingers in your mouth for hours.
