Life Soup - A Memoir: Testifying of the Healing Power of Jesus Christ Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

This is a true story told using the memories of a child - my inner child. It is a story of survival - a love story without romance, but hope. It tells of the age old struggle between good and evil, light and dark forces around us. Jesus Christ has been saving souls throughout human history. Thankfully He is a part of my story.

Life Soup by Pamela Lynn France is a skillfully woven memoir of recovery from childhood emotional, physical and sexual abuse. Her tale is more powerful through taking the reader on her journey through recovering lost memories, healing and forgiving through professional help, family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. We learn gradually the extent of the abuse and the mental and emotional impact on Pamela’s inner child, who “was lost in the deepest parts of my soup”(vi). And we finally see how Pamela is successful in “[f]inding her, knowing her, accepting and loving her” (vi).
Flashbacks, memories and photographs make Pamela’s childhood and family come alive, while poems, anecdotes, scriptures, psychological and psychotherapeutic explanations deepen the understanding of what Pamela experienced. Her later memories of adulthood experiences and trials shed further light on her loss and the help she learned to provide for herself which she did not receive in her childhood. Despite the serious topic, Pamela excels with threading hope throughout the work.
Life Soup was hard to put down. While I have not experienced abuse, this book opened my eyes to the experiences that many have, made me cry, made me think and most of all inspired me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is personally striving to heal from the effects of abuse, trauma, neglect or other painful struggles, and to those who seek to find and take care of their own inner child. This book will also be helpful for those who work with individuals who have suffered similarly, or who have family members or friends who have likewise suffered.

This courageous book is not for everyone. However, it opens one's understanding of the pain and lasting effects of child abuse, and leads to greater compassion for individuals in that situation. It is a wonderful lesson in forgiveness, healing, and dependence on Jesus Christ for support. Pamela France's strength to survive inspires anyone to survive the inequities of life, no matter what that trial may be. Her lifelong journey to heal is an example all can follow. If you know anyone who has been subject to abuse, or who has abused another person, this book will help you understand, and be more able to help.

Pamela France expertly weaves personal experiences with scientific research. Though the abuse is extreme, she never becomes too explicit. Still, some individuals may not be ready to read this type of book. I am glad I did, and I was inspired by it.

Life Soup is an honest look at the terror and pain of childhood abuse, the frantic attempts to make normalcy out of chaos and confusion while growing up, the craziness of living with suppressed and disconnected memories and emotions, the outrageous courage required to face the absolute necessity of healing, and the long process of finding peace, trusting God, and becoming whole once more. As a mental health professional I will recommend this book to those struggling to heal past abuses, as Pamela ' s simple and straightforward honesty about the process is inspiring as well as brutally realistic. It isn't ever easy or enjoyable on the journey, but this book demonstrates the reason for such excruciating work, which is the ability to finally feel peace and reconciliation with self and with the world. I appreciate Pamela for having the courage to share such an intimate look into her world.

Life Soup is a memoir written by my high school friend, Pamela Lynn France. Opening up and sharing her personal experience took true bravery and is an inspiration to anyone who has gone through similar circumstances. It's such a heartbreaking story and the fact that she has found peace in telling it, is a testament to what God can do in our lives.

This book is well written and gently approaches experiences that many individuals have had to live through. Pamela shares her personal story of aches and triumphs through childhood and adulthood. Reading this memoir is validating for feelings often buried and gives hope for the healing that follows the pursuit of self discovery, especially with the help of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I recommend Life Soup as reading for anyone interested in the patterns of abuse in families.

A well written book about a once taboo subject. Pamela writes well, the pace of the book is excellent. Though she hints at some of the revelations, we only learn of the full scope of her experiences near the end of the book. I would recommend this to teachers and others who might be in a position to observe and recognize abuse in children in their care.
