2 Year Review - My new hobby is swatting fungus gnats and fixing/modifying a toilet.

2 Year Review - My new hobby is swatting fungus gnats and fixing/modifying a toilet.
Before purchasing this unit I did a lot of research and heard a lot of wonderful things about the natures head toilet. At this point I can only assume that there is a massive advertising and social media influencer campaign to promote this toilet. If I had to do ever again I would've purchased a toilet from a different manufacturer. We purchased this toilet approximately two years ago for a weekend property. At first with occasional use it was good. However as we began to use the toilet more frequently, we experienced numerous problems with fungus gnats. No matter how often or how well we cleaned the unit, the gnats would come back. The only source of the gnats is the toilet as we don’t have potted plants or any kind of damp soil in the house. We tried everything, Neem, Diatomaceous earth, Essential oil flying insect spray (as recommended by Nature’s Head), mosquito bits, peroxide/water spray, on and on. Nothing worked, the gnats kept coming. One of the times we took the unit out to deep clean it we noticed there were many voids in the mold of the base unit just under the top lip. The gnats were laying eggs in hollow base unit, accessed via the voids.I contacted Nature’s Head thinking my toilet was defective but they said the voids are normal in the manufacturing process and recommended I caulk the voids. Seems crazy to spend over a thousand dollars and have to caulk the unit before it’s ready for use, but I gave it a shot. The gnats reappeared a short time later. Any tiny gap in the caulk and the gnats will still access the voids. I recently removed the old caulk and reapplied it liberally on the voids in a last ditch attempt to seal it.The Neem, diatomaceous earth, and mosquito bits did not work because the gnats simply lay their eggs under the top section of the unit far away from these additives in the compost. I’m current thinking about using PAM spray or something similar under the lid to prevent the eggs from sticking there.tIt is possible to partly disassemble the unit, remove the fan but because of some glue they have under the urine funnel it's very difficult to clean completely. Because the unit is difficult to clean I tried an air compressor and a long nozzle to dislodge the eggs that were all over the unit, especially the underside of the top unit. I had moderate success with this because there are many areas that are difficult to see and no ability to disassemble the unit without damaging it.I used mosquito netting over the air intake and the vent to the outside as I noticed some gnats in those areas, but because of the design, gnats can still somehow manage to get into the base where the top section sits on the lower section. Might need to make a gasket of sorts down the road to address that. The only thing I thought might work is to get a very large container and fill it with hydrogen peroxide and water and dunk the entire unit into it when cleaning periodically to kill the gnat eggs in the hollow base (after removing the fan of course).Bottom line is that the unit needs a major redesign and better manufacturing process. The redesign should make it easier to clean with less spaces for bugs, and make the unit easier to disassemble for deep cleaning. I doubt a redesign is in the works because people are still buying and raving about this model, so why would they bother?I hope this helps someone make a decision about which toilet to buy or how to address fungus gnats in your Nature’s Head toilet.
