I was a bit concerned with the MP3 player aspect of the Galaxy Player. I found that this is something that you don't really have to worry about because there are MANY different media players that you can download from app stores. I wasn't satisfied with the default media player because in order to do anything besides changing the volume while a track is playing you must unlock the media player's screen or use a pair of headphones that have controls built in. The headphones that come with the player have a control button. Unlocking the player requires you to slide your finger across the screen or type in a password if you set one, it does make skipping tracks or pausing the music inconvenient. Some media player apps that you can download have lock screen controls so that you can pause, skip, or rewind tracks without having to unlock the player. I use "Poweramp" which cost 5 dollars but it has lots of neat controls and lock screen controls.
There are essentially 3 buttons on the MP3 player (buttons that are not the touch screen). There is the power button, the + volume button and the - volume button. The power button when pressed turns the screen off so you aren't hitting random on-screen buttons when you don't want to. The volume buttons control the volume of course. There are two volume settings. One for when a set of headphones is plugged in and one for when there are no headphones plugged in. If you are playing a song and your headphone plug gets pulled out of the player by accident (or on purpose) the music automatically pauses. I am very glad that it does this because I listen to music in the library a lot and i accidentally unplug the headphones a lot. It would be very embarrassing to have my music blasting in a quiet library. If you don't like that you can change the options to continue play when headphones are unplugged. Some media players have options to change the +/- volume buttons to skip tracks but then you are left without volume controls without unlocking the screen. Some media players (the default included) have options to change what headphone controls do. Like the media player I have allows me to hit the button once to pause tracks, twice to skip the track, three times to go back one track. This is another way to control the music player without unlocking the screen.
Before I bought the player I wanted to see whether the screen was glass or acrylic. I'm fairly sure that the screen is acrylic and I have yet to scratch it. Just keep it out of a pocket with sharp things like keys in it. I don't have a case and I've never dropped the player despite using it daily. I am the kind of person who drops things often. I think the fact that this player is large helps me to keep hold of it better. I tend to leave things in my pocket which cost me a new phone last year when it went though the washing machine. This MP3 player is big enough that I never forget that it is in my pocket which for me is a good thing. The last thing I want is another expensive bricked electronic item. The fact that it is smooth helps it to slip out of pockets before making it into the washing machine as an extra precaution (though it hasn't made it that close to the washing machine yet). Also the earphones plug in tightly so if it doesn't drop too hard then the headphone cord prevents the player from falling fully but I tested (over my bed) and if the player drops more than about 2 feet, the force is enough the rip the headphone jack out so it would hit the ground.
I was also concerned about the size of the player. I thought it might be too big. It turns out that this player is just a little bit bigger than a Nintendo DS lite and half the thickness. I'm a guy and it fits in the pockets of all of my jeans and cargo pants. The size does take some getting used to but after the first month I got used to it. I'm happy to have the 5 inch version when I'm typing on the screen, it makes typing a lot easier. I thought of the Wifi access on this player as being a gimmick that I wouldn't use much because typing would make browsing slow but the screen size makes typing easy enough that I use the Galaxy Player for web browsing regularly. The larger screen size is also helpful for watching movies and it makes the player easier to hold when playing games. On the downside it takes some learning to use with one hand unless your hands are bigger than mine. If you are concerned about whether you'd like this or a smaller version, ask yourself what you want to use this for. I find that the 5 inch version is too big to use on bike rides or when running, the 4 inch or smaller version may be better for that. The 5 inch makes typing easier and it makes watching videos better. YouTube videos play without lag, just like from a laptop.
The pictures go up to about 3 megapixels which is about the size of a computer monitor if you want to take pictures for you computer desktop. The pictures aren't great in low light and come out fuzzy. In bright light the pictures are alright but this is no replacement for a point and shoot camera. The video is alright as well.
The battery is not designed to be replaced. If you plan to use this for years and years get the 4 inch version so you can replace the battery. The battery lasts a very long time. I watched an hour long movie on a car ride and the battery drained about 10 percent. If you just put the player to sleep (tap the power button briefly), the battery lasts for days and days if you have the Wifi turned off. There's really no need to turn the Galaxy Player off. TIP: turn off the Wifi when you aren't using it! The battery lasts like a day with Wifi on even when it is asleep. Turning it off and on is easy, there is a Wifi button on the media player's status bar thing on top, just tap to turn it on or off. This player wakes up from sleep immediately, hit the power button to wake it.
This media player has a Micro SD card slot. I got a class 10, 32 gigabyte card for 30 dollars on amazon. You don't need a card that fast but I got the fast one anyway. I had an MP3 player before that had a card slot and it loaded the songs slowly from the card. This MP3 player does not have that problem, the card loads once you start up the player then the music plays as though it were stored directly on the player (which is immediately). It needs to reload the card every time after you turn it off and on which wakes a minute or two but I usually just put my player to sleep (I rarely turn it off) and it doesn't need to reload the card after sleeping.
Another major concern of mine was whether I could build playlists on the MP3 player. With my last MP3 player (a Sony Walkman) I had to make playlists on the computer and export them to the MP3 player. With this MP3 player I can build playlists directly on the player so if I want to hear a particular few songs before mowing the lawn I can build the playlist as I sit on the mower and I can browse through my media library and click on them to add them to a music queue which is exactly what I wanted. The previous statement is true for "Poweramp" media player and "Play Music" which is the media player made by Google. The default media player I don't think has those options but like I said before there are many media players you can download to use instead of the default. You can import playlists from windows media player (as well as other media player's playlists). This isn't exactly simple though because there is a bug where the Playlist files can only be like 1-2 folders "deep" into the MP3 player or the media player can't find them, it's something like that. If you get that problem then ask here and I'll try to help you get around it. Also if you are interested this media player supports scrobbling to last.fm to keep track of your listening statistics which is great if you love statistics like me.
Sorry this was kind of long but I had a lot of questions before I bought this and spent a few days researching MP3 players. I thought I'd address the questions that I had before I bought this MP3 player. For the record I'm very happy with my purchase. If you have any specific questions about this MP3 player ask away.
The processor could use a little more muscle to handle applications, and about 100 MB more of RAM IF the processor were to be upgraded. But as is it handles great anyway. I just go in and exit out of the programs that aren't being used but hog the RAM at the same time. It's the same as keeping your computer's active programs to a manageable minimum for smooth performance. There are occasional quirks that happen, like about three times in the last month it just... randomly shut off my wifi; not from the lock screen, just during a certain application. But otherwise it's purred like a kitten.
There is one inconvenience: the camera lacks a zoom button, as far as I can see. However, there are camera apps that you can get (some for free, some not) that contain this feature if it bothers you too much.
In summary: No regrets. Definitely worth every penny that I used.
UPDATE (important):
I bought a 64 GB SDXC card for this thing and got it in the mail, and there was a note in there from the seller warning me to check again to see if this device could support such a large memory card. The site says only up to 32 GB, but then I decided to do some more research. I didn't wanna return this sweet little guy. so, after going through several videos on Youtube on whether this exact device-- android 2.3.5 and all-- could support it, I called their bluff. And to my great relief, the gamble worked. These devices CAN support 64 GB micro SDXC cards. BUT: In order for it to work, the SD card HAS to be formatted in order for that to happen. Once this is done, you're all set. Figured that could be a helpful tip!!
UPDATE (minor):
I remember reading other reviews who mentioned the speakers being a bit tinny on this device. It just has to be remembered it's a device that fits in your hand, so the speakers won't be very deep. HOWEVER, every device can have an equalizer adjusted to receive the best sound from their built-in speakers. The way I have been able to receive a full sound from these little speakers was by setting the low and high end frequencies around 80%, and the mid-range control between 40% and 50% (these percentages are based on the distance the marker can move along the bars of the equalizer, top being 100%, bottom 0%). The mid-range is what greatly lessens the "tinny" tone produced, but be careful about going above that margin of 40%-50%, as anything above that starts to break the sound up and hurt the speakers. At these settings, those little speakers can fill a room like it's nobody's business, with a nice, clear, full sound.
