The Craft & Art of Bamboo, Revised & Updated: 30 Eco-Friendly Projects to Make for Home & Garden Paperback – January 6, 2009

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 79 ratings

Beautiful, sustainable bamboo is one of the most popular materials around for gardens and home décor. This highly regarded introduction to the material is now back in print, revised and updated. It still offers rich history, fascinating background, and great projects, but with more than 20 new images—making this the most attractive source on the “it” plant of the green movement.
From weathering the plant and preventing insect damage to attaching, bending, flattening, finishing, and preserving the bamboo, this photo-filled introduction covers it all. More than 30 how-to projects include a curved garden handrail, low trellis for climbing plants, porch swing, and even an outdoor shower stall. Lush photography and abundant illustrations make the book a visual treat.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[Bamboo] is increasingly being used for garden structures…and the projects in this book reflect that trend…Few books are available on this topic, so this should be welcome in all garden and crafts collections.”—Library Journal

“The book’s mood is at one with nature: a loose flowing text around color photographs, black-and-white illustrations, step-by-step how-tos, and boxed commentaries.”—Booklist.

This book is awesome!
5 Stars
This book is awesome!
Comes with clear instructions and cultural references to understand some of the project ideas and their intended purposes. I really like how this book is organized, and the types of projects it offers. I'm particularly interested in garden related uses, and I'm a first time bamboo grower inheriting a decent crop. Very glad to have found this book!

A beautifully illustrated and very informative book that details bamboo types, growing conditions and best of all, how to turn this wonderful plant into useful projects. The gates, in particular, inspire the reader to get right out there and build them because they are such a worth while and gorgeous addition to any garden. Smaller projects, such as garden trellises, are entirely manageable and the furniture building ideas spark creativity. I built a a 6 foot wide by 5 foot tall trellis to support peas that has really added to the beauty of my vegatable garden and elicits great comments from neighbors and passers-by alike. I need to add that the book was so fairly priced I couldn't pass it up.

great ideas, I haven't studied it or tried it out but when i read some of the directions -- it seemed a little confusing on some and easy on the others.

This book was very inspiring on ways to use up pesky, invasive Bamboo cane to make some lovely, useful and inexpensive things for house and garden, which grows widely in my area. I used this book in conjunction with Building Bamboo Fences (Japanese author) to build myself two large trellises to act as a screen between my neighbor's property and mine. Also, this book showed me that bamboo, while an incredibly invasive weed, also has great potential both as an ornamental and for use as a very inexpensive, yet tough and durable building material, especially in garden landscapes. My only disappointment was that I was unable to locate the Bamboo Farm where many of the projects in the book were created. They do not seem to have a website. If anyone knows the website, I would like to learn more about the Bamboo Farm in Georgia.

Ms. Stangler's handbook is a comprehensive guide to essential materials & techniques for both the novice & more advanced learner. Beautiful illustrations accompany clear explanations & practical tips reflecting the wisdom of the author's broad experience as both a practitioner & educator. Beyond this, there is an appreciation for the universal appeal of this versatile grass and reconnection with the source of life that bamboo affords.

This is a wonderful book that has lots of ideas for using bamboo. We have so much bamboo growing around our place it is nice to see some uses for it besides feeding it to our livestock in the winter time. Even our chickens eat the green leaves during the winter and then we can use the stalks to build something else!

This book surprised me in that it is far more useful than I would have thought (judging by the cover and some of the topics covered). Yeah, there are some cheesy craft projects shown... but there are some great ideas on how to build bamboo fences that mimick traditional Japanese fences using western techniques and that's what I was most interested in when I bought it. It's an inexpensive book that's actually worth much more than the cover price.

The book is beautiful. Lots of great ideas & instruction. I was really looking for smaller bamboo projects & most of this book is for large items such as fences & furniture etc. Still a great book if those are the projects you're wanting to make.
