"Naval Surgeon" is a nicely-crafted volume containing the edited journals of Royal Naval Surgeon Edward Cree, from 1837-1856. The beauty of the book comes from the carefully-reproduced paintings and sketches by the author on his voyages, particularly through Asia, during a very turbulent transitional era. For a student of Asian History, this would make an excellent addition to the library.
My hope was that there would be more details about surgery and medicine at sea, something not often covered in detail in books about the Royal Navy. However, I expect that the topic was considered unseemly as a topic of general discussion, (especially among the ladies!), and any such details are rarely mentioned, though lives were lost through sickness, accident and conflict during his voyages.
