My hope was that there would be more details about surgery and medicine at sea, something not often covered in detail in books about the Royal Navy. However, I expect that the topic was considered unseemly as a topic of general discussion, (especially among the ladies!), and any such details are rarely mentioned, though lives were lost through sickness, accident and conflict during his voyages.
If you are fond of Nineteenth-Century Royal Navy History, do avail yourself of this bargain-priced attractive book.
