This software is by far the best collection of word, spreadsheet and email applications for a Mac. Outlook alone is worth the price of admission. I use a PC at work and have outlook on that. This is very similar in terms of its feel and functionality. There are some limitations to the applications as compared to the Windows versions which other reviewers have pointed out, but for what I use this for, those limitations are peripheral. While I do not mean to dismiss the other reviewers complaints (I'm sure I would be just as miffed as they are if I really used these functionalities), the Mac Office suite is a must have for Mac owners who need word, spreadsheet and email applications. When I bought my Mac, I purchased the Apple suite of applications (numbers etc.) and they pale in comparison to the Mac Office versions. You simply have to have the Microsoft versions, they are hands down superior over the Apple applications.

What I especially like about Mac Office is the ability to use Outlook on my home Mac to check work emails, prepare spreadsheets and other work-related documents that I can send to colleagues without having to haul my work computer home. If you're looking at Mac Office, really give some thought to buying the version with Outlook. I almost bought the version without, but decided to go with the version that includes outlook and have not regretted it. You can do so much more with the outlook version. But if you really don't need business email functionality, then go with the version without it.

UPDATE: If you have been a user of the PC version of Microsoft Office Products, then I highly recommend that you try the trial version of this product before you make a horrible mistake! Once you convert your PST file from the PC version to the Mac version, there is no way to convert the file (OLM) back to the PC version (PST) file! Hopefully, Microsoft will come with a tool that does this; which they likely will because of the all the customers that will be very, very unhappy with the Mac version, which is very, very lacking! No automatic archive, email HTML editing will take you back to the 90's, no "undo" button if you are composing in a window away from the main program, and does no longer sync with MobileMe--nor is it likely to do so anytime in the near future. So now my iPhone is not up-to-date. I am very, very unhappy with Office 2011 for Mac!!

I admit it, I am a power user of Microsoft Office products, having used them since the first version. And I realize that the Mac versions have always been behind at least a couple of generations from the PC versions. However, the Outlook 2011 for Mac has only about 2/3s of the features of the PC version. I use a MacBook Pro running Parallels desktop with both Windows 7 Ultimate and Snow Leopard, so I can go either way. After I saw the new version of 2011 Office for Mac FINALLY included Outlook, I bought it and now, after struggling with it for almost a month, I wish I had never wasted my money on it! It appears that Microsoft just gave Outlook 2011 the bare, rudimentary features--just enough that they could give it the name; however they should have named it Outlook 2003 for Mac, as that is almost what it is comparable to in the PC version.

If you have the option, you are much better off to use almost any Windows version of Office and avoid the Mac version. If it is not an option, Outlook 2011 for Mac is a better option than the one included with on your Mac; however that is kind of like voting and picking the lesser evil for a political candidate! If you are a sophisticated user, get Parallels and Windows on your Mac and go for Office 2010 and save yourself a lot of frustration! The expression "ignorance is bliss" applies here, if you have never used the PC versions of Office, you won't miss the additional features missing from Office 2011 for Mac.

Let me elaborate a little: no undo button on the Mac version, the composing features (especially in HTML mode) are extremely lacking and spam? Prepare to be flooded with spam as there are no viable spam filters available! If you want to be productive in an high productive office environment, use one of the PC versions of Microsoft Office, even Office 2007 is much, much better than Office 2011 for Mac!

First: I have been mostly a Windows user who switched to Mac out of sheer frustration with Wintel products. Since I still need to be able to work with others who are stuck in the Windows environment, years ago I bought MS Office 2004 for Mac. I just made the transition to 2011 and it is a vast, vast improvement (I am running Snow Leopard) from 2004.

However there are still little things here and there that make it not exactly as user friendly as the Windows version. The conspiracy theorist in me is whispering in my ear that perhaps Microsoft did it on purpose to make us experience "death by a thousand papercuts"... Nothing major and mostly in Excel with fly-by windows that do not disappear after the cursor leaves the cell, the data filtering window is an ugly BLACK semitransparent windows that pops up rather than a pull down menu, the page zoom functionality is a slide cursor and does not allow a controlled click-by-increments like in the windows environment,etc..

More serious is the fact that since moving to MS Office 2011 for Mac I started experiencing "system crashes" that required reboots (fortunately a matter of a minute on a Mac - up to one hour on a Wintel platform). I almost never had this problem before. Not only that, but in at least 2 circumstances in the last month, after I agreed to send the error report as per Microsoft pop up window request, it started generating a HUGE report with an expected transmission time of almost 2 hours (on a cable broadband connection) as per the system estimate. At first I thought it was just a rough estimate and I let it do whatever it was doing while I moved on to save the auto-recovered files, but then my macbook slowed down to a crawl and when I checked the progress on the "extended" report (15-20 minutes later) it was still at 0% and churning CPU time like crazy. I killed that thing and moved on with my life (although it did also freeze my Office apps which I had to terminate manually etc...gotta love Microsoft!)

Finally, let's face it, Outlook is much better than Apple Mail. One place to coordinate all your contacts, to-dos, mail, calendar and more. I welcomed the new Outlook for Mac with open arms and it was a major selling point for me given its native connectivity with Exchange server. HOWEVER, it does not sync with Google calendar! A simple task that I can do even with iCal! I use an Android smart-phone and I need one tool on my Mac where I can sync ALL my calendars (personal and business). No windows/aps switching and note taking on the side. HUGE let down. I am resigned to use Apple Mail/iCal and Address book.

In summary - vast improvement from MS Office 2004 (duh! But not sure if it was that big from MS Office 2008) but with some typical Microsoft nagging problems (some bigger than others).

If you straddle both Mac and Windows worlds like me, you really do not have a viable choice. I recommend the product but remember to set your expectations as low as possible and you'll be ok.

3 stars but it could become a 5 stars with a few improvements - just do it Microsoft!

It may be a bit pricey but it is much better than running an Exchange account on outlook than having mail and calenders synching separately.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY UNSTABLE
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2012
If I could give this product 0 stars I would, closely followed by a minus score for Microsoft support! It is extremely unstable and Outlook has now twice deleted my emails accounts and all the data they held - provoked only by a restart on my Mac. When backed into a corner, Microsoft will stutter about the issues and maintain that these will be eradicated by the release of 2015 in a few months time - a great help to me and to anyone suffering the same issues now! I suspect it may take them until 2015 to get it right - if they ever do!

It also conflicts with my brand new (just released) MacBook Air, the operating system it was designed to be compatible with. I have had to uninstall this Microsoft programme from the Mac altogether and it is now flying!

I cannot vouch for MS Word and Excel, they may be OK with a Mac and I may have to use them but Outlook, at least, will never see my Mac again!

In the course of all my issues I have had the occasion to deal with both Apple and Microsoft support operations and the difference between the two is quite staggering. Apple really care that their customers are happy and love their products and nothing is too much trouble whereas Microsoft are arrogant, could give a damn and do their best to wriggle out of everything. I will leave the reader to decide who they would prefer to deal with!

3.0 out of 5 stars Outlook doesn't work properly, but the rest of it is fine
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2015
When I first installed Office Mac 2011, I thought it was fine.

Word, PowerPoint, and Excel all work OK and are compatible with Office 2010 in most respects (in my experience). However, Outlook is appalling. I use POP for email, and after setting up my email accounts, it seemed to work OK intially. Then one day I noticed I had over 5000 unread emails!!! The application had downloaded a copy of EVERY EMAIL in my various email Inboxes. What?

After scouring the internet I found many many many threads about this issue, and Microsoft just don't seem to want to repair this major bug. I spoke to Microsoft Support - they didn't have a solution and suggested I use IMAP. Well Mr Microsoft, I don't want to use IMAP, and if this product isn't supposed to work using POP then it shouldn't be available as an option.

So after quite some time with this product, my Outlook has sync'd at least a dozen times, and this has meant painstaking hours of removing duplicated emails from the several email accounts I have on there.

I don't use Outlook in Office 2011 anymore as it's more trouble than it's worth. So it's destined to spend the remainder of its life Offline!

However, as I use the Macbook Pro quite a lot due to it's size and weight, I do use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint quite a lot, and they work fine. I just wish Microsoft would do something about the Outlook issues because I PAID for the whole suite, not three quarters of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buying this version for Outlook?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 1, 2012
Word is Word.
Excel is Excel.
I don't really use Powerpoint, i'm going to guess it's pretty much the same as the PC version.
I bought the Business Edition so i could use my new Macbook for work e-mails, calendar and contacts as i can easily do with my Windows PC and iPhone.
Surely it's going to be a breeze setting up an account? After all, on the iPhone you just stick in a user name, password and a server name and you're away.
Not so. It turns out my employers version of Microsoft Exchange Server is pre-2007, and although the iPhone, and for that matter a PC running XP or Windows 7 can connect and talk to the server without a hitch, new versions of Office for Mac refuse to communicate with older versions of Microsoft Exchange. I basically have to wait for my employers to rollout an upgrade to their servers before I can use Outlook for my work account and that's not going to happening anytime soon. Pretty disappointing really. I could've saved money and a fair bit of investigatory time if i'd been aware of this before purchase. My fault, should've done the research.
