WHAT IS AN EXHAUST SYSTEM?

Vital for fuel economy and the environment, your vehicle’s exhaust system carries away harmful gases that are created during the combustion process. The exhaust system not only keeps dangerous gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons from entering the cabin but it also "cleans up" the gases before they are released into the environment. Here are the components of an exhaust system:

  1. Manifold/Manifold Converters
  2. Extension Pipe/Flex Pipe/Intermediate Pipe
  3. Catalytic Converters
  4. Oxygen (O2) Sensor Ports
  5. Isolators/Gaskets/Clamps
  6. Resonator Assemblies
  7. Mufflers/Muffler Assemblies

Walker Resonators Module-5-1

Walker Resonators Module-5-2

Walker Resonators Module-5-3

Walker Resonators Module-5-4

WHAT IS A RESONATOR?

Located between the catalytic converter and the muffler, resonators help quiet the exhaust system by cancelling out a certain range of sounds frequencies. An empty chamber, exhaust sound travels through the resonator, bouncing and pulsating. Through this process, some of the sound gets cancelled out before moving to the muffler. Having some of the noise reduced makes the job of the muffler easier.

SIGNS OF RESONATOR WEAR

Resonators primarily deteriorate from the inside out due to the acidic moisture produced by the combustion process. Other signs you may need to replace your resonator include noise coming from the resonator, a foul odor from not properly filtering exhaust gases or reduced engine performance and decreased gas mileage.

EASY TO INSTALL

Safety is important when installing a resonator. That’s why Walker resonators feature meticulous pipe routing and OE-style hardware, flanges, and brackets for fast, easy installation while Walker welded resonator assemblies feature a customizable design for easy fitment (may require specialized fabrication and/or welding for installation). When installing a resonator or resonator assembly, follow these tips for a successful repair.

  1. Use premium Walker accessories for a complete exhaust system upgradeM
  2. ake sure your garage or workspace is well ventilated to prevent exhaust gases from building up in your workspaceL
  3. et your vehicle cool off before working on it – everything under the car will be hot if it has been runningI
  4. f using jacks to raise your vehicle, be sure to raise it with jacks on each side

HOW TO TORQUE FLANGES

Progressively tighten bolts on flanges to avoid exhaust system leaks, gasket & stud failure and premature system fatigue & failure. For example, if the nuts require 60-ft-lbs of torque, start by torquing all nuts to 20-ft-lbs, then 40-ft-lbs and finish at 60-ft-lbs. For Y-pipes secure both sides simultaneously, tightening in a rotating sequence between both pipes. For manifold converters, begin sequence in the middle & work evenly out between both sides.

Product Description

Designed to fit, perform and sound like the original system, Walker® resonators use precise tuning technologies to deliver excellent flow characteristics and OE-style sound.

I installed this assembly on a 1997 Honda Accord LX, 4 cylinder, nonVtec, non-CA emission vehicle.
Bolted into place with no problems. Assembly is well made including the welds.

The factory original piece has a bolt on lower heat shield on a section of the pipe that is removable but will not fit on this replacement due to pipe size and also the welded on hangers of the new piece are in the way. No big deal as this lower heat shield only appears to help prevent the exhaust pipe from coming in contact with road objects.

Be sure to get the two gaskets that you will need. Walker 31383 and Walker 31360.

Update: August, 2023.

Almost 8 years after install.
84600 miles

Pipe is still doing fine, no leaks. Amazing.
Loud, expensive performance exhaust on daily drivers is overrated. OEM style aftermarket exhaust is great, quiet, gas mileage, very affordable.

=========================================================

Update: October 2020

41,000 miles and ~almost 5 years later, still doing fine with no issues.

Current price is only a few bucks more than when I bought it. I guess I should also say that I live in Hawaii, to give you idea of climate.

============================================

Installed on a 95 Accord LX, 5spd, 4DR.

The old stock pipe had some holes in the resonator part; it was loud and would make wheezing noises.
The new pipe is now very quiet, and I suspect it regains a little bit of torque or power compared to driving with exhaust leak. Car shifts a little smoother (manual) when I off throttle, as rpms don’t dip like when it had the exhaust leak.

Along with this pipe, I also bought
Bosal 256-036 Exhaust Gasket  (rear donut)
Walker 31383 Hardware Gasket  (front triangle)

I definitely needed the rear gasket; the old one was pretty fused to the old pipe.
For whatever reason, my old pipe did not have the front triangle gasket, so I may or may not have needed a new triangle gasket.
In any case, I used both gaskets. I used some copper spray on the front triangle gasket.

I ended up dropping the pipe together with the catalytic converter. And then I unbolted the two while the whole thing was off the car. This was far easier than trying to deal with the cat bolts on the car. I ended up using air impact on the cat nuts.

The stock spring bolts (2 on the rear; and also 2 in front of the cat, if you also drop the cat) are pretty short, and are very tough to get back on. I happened to have
Walker 35129 Exhaust Spring Bolt Kit  on the side, and did use them for convenience for the stock bolts that didn’t want to go back.

There was a heat shield or something that comes off the stock pipe that isn’t used on the new pipe.

After the install, I would hear clunking noises from the front while going at slow/moderate speeds. I wasn’t really able to associate the noise with anything as it happened kind of randomly. But after 2-3 weeks, the clunking seemed to have disappeared. I suspect the exhaust may have been making contact with something, and after a while, the rubber hangers settle or whatever. There is no clunking noise anymore.

I have been installing exhaust on my own cars for 30 years, everything from VW Bugs to Corvettes. This system (this item plus the Walker 55074) fit perfectly and went on easily even installing it on my garage floor using a floor jack and stands. It took longer to cut off the 3 bolts holding in the old system than to install. Aluminized finish is exactly as expected and should last for years. I highly recommend this part!

PROS:
- Hangers in correct orientation/location
- Ease of installation
- Quiet

CONS:
- Aluminized steel piping
- No gaskets, no connection hardware, no hanging components, just the piping itself
- Lack of packaging and need to remove labels before installation

The Walker resonator assembly is a reasonably priced replacement part for my 1994 Honda Accord. I also purchased the
Walker Exhaust 55074 Muffler Assembly-Quiet-FlowSS  from Amazon.

Initially I should mention the packaging... or lack thereof. The pipe was shipped without any packaging whatsoever, aside from the box tape which was used to cover the ends. The shipping label and invoice were glued directly to the pipe. I was quite disappointed that Amazon chose to ship the product this way, since an exhaust gets HOT, which means that anything on the exhaust will burn or melt. Thus, I had to remove four stickers (though only three are attributable to Amazon): two different shipping labels and a plastic invoice holder, the fourth was Walker's own product label. A putty knife, some goo gone, and a half hour later the product was clean and ready to install. Also, there was no packaging to protect the pipe during shipping.

It should also be noted that this resonator assembly does NOT come with any other hardware or gaskets. Assuming you still have the rubber hangers/insulators (
Walker Exhaust 35286 Hardware-Insulator  3x for the resonator pipe), you will also need the gasket which fits between the resonator pipe and the catalytic converter  Walker Exhaust 31383 Hardware-Gasket , and possibly also the gasket between the resonator pipe and muffler  Walker Exhaust 31360 Hardware-Gasket  depending on if you replaced that component as well.

The piping is aluminized steel, as advertised. While not the best material, the lifetime warranty makes up for the fact that eventually the piping will rust out. Additionally, the hangers are regular steel and began to rust immediately (but not a big deal in my book). Installation was straightforward, and the hangers were all in their correct places/orientations. No need to bend or manipulate the piping or hangers.

Overall, I would buy this product again. Unfortunately, unlike the Walker QuietFlow SS, the resonator assembly is not covered by Walker's lifetime guarantee: [...]

Pipe fit perfectly on my Dad's 95 Accord LX. Only problem was an extremely poor weld on the flex-pipe section of the pipe. Makes the annoying hissing-sound exhaust leak. 3mm hole in the middle of the weld. Going to throw some weld spatter on it when I have the time, but I should not have to. I worked as a professional mechanic for 10+ years, and Walker used to be my preferred aftermarket exhaust brand (used to be much better than a company with a name that sounds like they have a bad sinus infection). Not anymore. This is half-rearended QC. Take pride in your work, or don't do it and sell it. Pretty disappointed for $90+
