Quite simply, the easiest introduction to Jewish mysticism you can read.

An insightful and absorbing introduction to the ten gates of Jewish mysticism and how they apply to daily life.

"There is a place that is as far from here as breathing out is from breathing in. For the word is very near to you. Where life forever holds gentle sway over death, where people are human with the same grace that a willow is a willow, where the struggle and the yearning between male and female is at last resolved.... It is to begin with, all inside us."
―from the Introduction

"In the past decade I've read Honey from the Rock at least half a dozen times. Every time I read it I wonder if I have ever read it before. Either it keeps changing, or I do. Maybe it’s both.... As someone told me: 'Lawrence Kushner is a mystic. He gives you flashes of insight.'"
―from the Publisher’s Preface to the Anniversary Edition

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Lawrence Kushner describes Honey from the Rock as "an attempt to synthesize some of the world view of classical Jewish mysticism, or Kabbala, with the ordinary life experience of its author." In the introduction, Kushner also explains that the book "works best, not as a primer on Kabbalah, nor as a glimpse into the private places of a liberal Rabbi, but as a means of enticing the reader to allow a Kabbalistic world view to inform his or her everyday life." After providing that explanation of his project, Kushner's book takes flight. He begins: "There is a place as far from here as breathing out is from breathing in. For the word is very near you.... Where life forever holds gentle sway over death, where people are human with the same grace that a willow is a willow, where the struggle and the yearning between male and female is at last resolved. It is, to begin with, all inside us." There are no false words in this book, no straining logic, no lazy vagueness, no awkward didacticism. Honey from the Rock walks through 10 different "gates" to Jewish mysticism, from the "Wilderness" of preparation for prayer to the "Higher Worlds" of which some are granted glimpses. Each chapter will help clarify your vision a little more and teach you to become a little more present. Each one will also make you smile. --Michael Joseph Gross

A profound book, by a profound author. Kushner expertly weaves the concepts of the universal mystic journey into the fabric of Judiasm, providing the reader with insights - ancient and modern - into Jewish mysticism. His easy to read style belies the fact that you will never truly understand the contents - like any mystical writing - it has so many meanings and layers that it transcends full understanding. Whether it is a story of the bird on a front porch, or the comparison of Moses and Elijah or the composition of the Lurianic Tree of Life, Kushner will provoke deep thought in a light style. A great read.

Beautifully written and inspiring. Touched me deeply, and gave me a deeper understanding of Jewish Mysticism. Soulful and uplifting. Unlike many books on the Kabbalah, it came from the heart, rather than being overly intellectual.

Mysticism and spirituality have become trite words in modern secular society, but this book really makes a good case for reading and understanding on a higher level

This has to be read slowly so as to absorb the beauty and let it point you in the direction of your entrance to the Divine.

This book is fantastic, dripping with insights that can bring awareness and light to a readers life. However, the forward completely marred the reading experience. To know that the author now considers the writing of the book and the spiritual insights to be naive takes away from the credibility of its truth. Hard to continue reading and keep asking, “does he still believe this? Does this still feel true?” It brings up self distrust when the section feels true to you but you know that the author finds it naive.

I got a divine nudge to read this book, and all I can say is WOW! Its words engulfed me immediately, and it felt as though I tapped directly into the universe and the spirit of Yahweh. It was an encounter with all that is holy and sacred—pure light and love—honey from the rock. I think this book is best absorbed if you are mature in your spiritual journey. Definitely NOT a “how to” book, but more of a path to meditate and be in the presence of infinite love. How it took me there is still a mystery to me. But I am forever evolved because of the deep understanding that was opened to me by reading this book. If only we could capture these fleeting encounters with the divine and bottle them. But the inner joy was so intense, I felt a sensory overload afterwards. The God we imagine is so much smaller and finite than the great I Am.
