Dead People (Haunted Hearts Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
"The story is entertaining, eye-widening, edge-your-seat thrilling and belly-laugh funny.” -Lis, Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell
When Cassie Taylor talks, ghosts listen. She wants to heal their souls so they can leave earth. Brooding songwriter Luke Rivers wants to give his recently found daughter a normal home, but he discovers his new house in small town Wisconsin is haunted by a ghost with an attitude. Cassie has an attitude too — even before someone tries to kill her.
He wants conventional; she wants acceptance. No wonder she thinks men are hard and dead people are easy.

Luke has the hot bad boy look locked down but when he finds out he now has custody of his 10 year old daughter Erin those days are starting to look like a thing of the past. While just finding out he has a 10 year old daughter is rough, but finding out she's Been living with her mother who is a junkie is even worse. Erin wants her mom and blames herself for her moms problems. Luke wants to be a great dad but doesn't know anything on raising a child she hates him for taking her away from her mom. It's made it even worse when he finds out the new house is haunted so that is why he hires Cassie walks into their lives. I've read a lot of books on the kindle and my iPad it was a great change from what I've been reading
In this book, Cassie has been hired by retired rocker Luke Rivers to rid his newly purchased home of the ghost residing in it. Cassie feels an immediate attraction to Luke and sees some of herself in his emotionally troubled and withdrawn 10-year old daughter, Erin. Not being a "people person", Cassie wants to make this a quick job and hit the road.
Amidst the sexual tension and banter played out between Cassie and Luke, there is a "mystery" woven into the story (or maybe I should say more like suspense). Cassie must try to solve the "mystery" (in order for the the ghost to be willing to leave the house) while trying to remain emotionally unattached to both Luke and Erin.
Cassie and Luke have some wonderful banter and Cassie has some great one-liners. I found myself chuckling one more than one occasion. In addition to the snappy dialogue, one of the things I liked best in this book is that the ghosts are actually secondary characters (not just there in the background). They have personalities and opinions and they make them heard.
There are a few scattered typographical and grammatical errors throughout the book, for example, the use of "she" instead "the", "here" instead of "there or where", a missing "but" or "and". However, for the most part, the book is well written with a good voice. The characters are complex and 3-dimensional and the story is engaging.
I don't know if Ms. Ramer has any plans to write another story featuring Cassie (and Luke), but if she does, I look forward to reading it.
Cassie Taylor is a very lonely, very single, slightly overweight but she doesn't care cause she's given up on men, woman with the unique ability to interact with ghosts. She uses this ability to help ghosts move on from this world with the help of her best and only pal in the world, Joe, who also happens to be a ghost. Cassie is hired by Luke Rivers, a famous rocker/songwriter when he buys a house to provide for his ten year old daughter he never knew he had. It turns out the house is haunted and Cassie shocks them when she tells them the ghost is here because she was murdered. No one takes this news more poorly than the ghost herself and challenges Cassie to prove it which essentially throws her into finding out what happened to her. Meanwhile, Cassie and Luke have an immediate attraction to one another and Cassie finds she's breaking all her personal rules about getting involved, not only with Luke, but with his very troubled daughter as well.
Overall, the story is enjoyable, but I have to say there's alot going on and although it isn't confusing, you do ask yourself what the point of some things are. I don't know if this is the start of a series. If so, that would make sense because several side stories were introduced, but there was no closure to them. Cassie and Luke's attraction was also just a might too instantaneous and I'm not really sure I fell for it, or what was even driving it. One thing for sure is that I wasn't quite sure how we were going to get to the end and just how much unfolds. There's lots of things Cassie uncovers during her investigation, but its relevancy to the story is less than insignificant. The murderer is revealed early on, but red herrings are still thrown into the mix in terms of co-conspirators. It really could have gone in any direction, but it ended up going the path most travelled.

This is a quick, light read that is the paranormal equivalent of a "cozy" mystery. Cassie's day job is a bit outside the norm, any norm. Ever since she was a little girl, she has seen ghosts and they, in return, are thrilled to have someone to chat with. But sometimes they get a little rambunctious & reluctant to move on.
Now in her thirties, she is hired by the living to help expedite a ghost's trip to the afterlife. She became estranged from her family after her mom died & her dad remarried. They think she's a freak, like almost everyone else that has ever become close to her. Don't even mention her ex-fiance.
Thank goodness she has Joe, a dead cop ( and Elvis doppelganger ) who rides shotgun as she takes on cases of the departed in denial. Next up is a request to rid a 200 year old Victorian manor of it's former owner. Isabel was a proud, wealthy woman who died suddenly of a heart attack and she's ticked. She wants the current residents, a famous singer/songwriter and his daughter, out of her house.
Luke was a rock god in his 20's. He wrote hit after hit for his band & married the lead singer. About the only good thing to come out of it was Erin, their daughter. But he didn't find out he was the father until she was 10 & his ex was in rehab for the kabillionth time. Determined to give her a normal life, he gets custody & moves to an old Victorian in a small town. Then they meet Isabel.
What follows is the story of Cassie's attempt to convince Isabel to go to the light while fighting her growing attraction to Luke. Before it's all over, she'll have to deal with a psycho babysitter, a stubborn ghost, an attempt on her life & lust...lots of lust where Luke is concerned.
There's nothing wrong with this book, it depends on your taste & what you enjoy reading. It's kind of a thriller "lite", where there is a little intrigue but you never really fear for her life & you'll figure out who the bad guy is long before the big showdown. It's also clear this is an HEA story so no surprises there, either. I guess I just prefer something a little grittier where I'm kept guessing about something 'til the end. If you're a fan of cozies, go for it & enjoy a charming read. A short novella sequel is now available.
