This is Esa-Pekka SalonenÂs debut live recording from the Walt Disney Concert Hall and his first recording as the principal conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic on DG. The central piece, StravinskyÂs Le Sacre du printemps was conducted by Salonen on the inaugural night of the Hall in 2003, a masterpiece that becomes something of a miracle within the outstanding acoustics of the Walt Disney Hall. This recording captures the energy, beauty and musical power of this extraordinary collaboration.
To capture the full sound experience of this concert, DG delivers this recording on a hybrid SACD. This release is certain to be a superior musical experience if not the new reference recording of this classical music milestone. Other pieces on this release are MussorgskyÂs Night on Bald Mountain and BartókÂs Miraculous Mandarin SuiteÂworks that benefit greatly from the superb acoustics at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as the highest possible recording sound quality.

There is tremendous energy to these interpretations; the Mussorsky is rapid, mult-faceted and rhythmic. The Bartok is brilliant and quick without losing its spooky roots. This is not a CD to relax to, you should turn it up.
This performance of the Rite of Spring may well be the new standard. It is brilliant, bright, very visual, and rock steady. It is showy and at the same time, very articulated. It creates continuous momentum up to the brief and explosive final cadences. There is a particular genius to Salonen's leadership that clarifies the music and makes it easier to understand -- and must constitute a liftime of risk, hard work and continued analysis on his part. And the orchestra is perfection, the soloists outstanding!
The Los Angeles Times review of this CD noted that the artwork failed to include a picture of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, so a decal was affixed to the case. If you have never seen the Hall and you don't have a decal on your copy, pull up an image on your computer. With its acoustics and beautiful shapes, the Hall deserves recognition too!
The virtuosity and dexterity of the playing in all three works is simply staggering and DG do it ample justice with a live, demonstration-quality recording of quite extraordinary dynamic range. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that I can't think of another recording from DG (or maybe any label) that sounds this good. The sheer impact of the loudest passages is phenomenal (although detail and balance are never sacrificed) and the all-important bass drum strokes in The Rite will blow your windows out. I don't have an SACD player; god knows what this must sound like on one of those. I'm tempted to buy one just to find out!
Salonen has clearly honed the LAPO into a superb ensemble during his tenure and he drives them pretty hard in The Rite. They're with him every step of the way in a phenomenally exciting performance which culminates in an eye-poppingly swift and dizzying Sacrificial Dance.
If I have one reservation it's that I have this nagging feeling that we're hear to listen to the LAPO and the Walt Disney Hall rather than Stravinsky's music. It's ever so slightly 'hey, listen to us... how good are WE?!', and lacks the earthiness of a Bernstein or Rattle interpretation, for example. On the other hand, it's easy to be cynical about something that appears so perfect, and I have no doubt that most buyers will find this disc incredibly satisfying. Of my five recordings of The Rite, it's the one I play most often.
