After two weeks with the PS4 and a week with the Xbox, I love them both. There are pros and cons to each console. The positive for the PS4 is that it is the finished product. You can clearly see what Sony wanted to do and they executed on it. If you had a PS3 and enjoyed it then you’ll probably love the PS4. It is a game console first and foremost. They’ve made the interface much more user friendly, they’ve sped it up exponentially, and really made it a joy to use. The controller has been much improved to the point I now prefer the PS controller over the Xbox controller, which wasn’t the case last generation. The console itself is sleek and really can disappear on the entertainment system because it is so small and quiet. Also, as a service, PS+ beats Xbox Live hands down, giving away free games with the system the day of launch with the promise of more to come.
All that said, the Xbox One has gotten more use than the PS4 to this point. Microsoft went for the full entertainment experience over trying to box itself into simply being a gaming console. With the HDMI input my cable box is connected to my Xbox and it gets turned on every time I walk into the living room. It is set to turn on my receiver and my television for me when I say “Xbox On”. It is a very forward looking system, but while you can see exactly what Sony envisioned when you get the PS4, Microsoft is more about the potential of what is to come. The ideas are exciting, but the execution isn’t fully realized. The idea of controlling my television experience with the Xbox is great, and at times it works great, but things like stations that sound alike when translated by a computer can hinder the user experience. Also, all the channels on my cable network aren’t currently appearing on the Xbox. For instance I have young children that watch Sprout and currently that doesn’t appear on the Xbox One Guide in my area. Another hindrance is the lack of ability to control what is on the DVR, so you’ll still end up having to use that remote from time to time. Still while saying that to have your 5 year old be able to walk in a room, say “Xbox On”, “Watch TV”, and be able to watch his cartoons without me fearing what will happen if he gets hold of the remote is great. The wife and kids love using it even with its current drawbacks. The snap feature is great, and being able to play a game while having a sporting event snapped over to the side was a great experience I wasn’t expecting to have.
Just like the drawbacks I mentioned with the Xbox, the Playstation has a few things you should be aware of… When I got the system, I got download happy, wanting to get all my stuff set up. I had multiple things downloading in the background, I expected the system to be smart enough to properly manage the resources to make things continue to run smooth. Well, that wasn’t the case. Not sure if they’ve patched this at this point because I’ve just avoided doing it since, but while playing games with a bunch of things downloading in the background things got clunky real quick. Now I set up my downloads and let them go over night while the system is in Standby mode rather than downloading things while using the system. It would’ve been nice if the system would pause a download if it interfered with current activities, which even my 360 would give a message that a download has stopped when a game I was playing would access the internet or something, but this is a minor gripe to me that hasn’t drastically impacted my experience.
In my opinion the choice comes down to what you want out of a console and what games you like the most. Sony made a great console, but it won’t reinvent your entertainment center it will just add to it, which is perfectly fine. If you don’t like the idea of talking to do things, then the user interface is actually better on the PS4, because it is much easier to navigate with a controller than the Xbox One. If you love role playing games then the future looks to be on PS4 with games like Infamous, Uncharted, and even Last of Us somewhere down the line exclusive on Playstation. If first person shooters are your thing, then Microsoft is the future with Titanfall, Halo, and a new IP that will turn into this generation’s version of Gears of War.
First of all, the system is a lot smaller and lighter than i expected. I would expect a system this size in a PS4 "slim" edition with the way things have been going with Sony. You know what I mean...original console launches in a "fat" version, then we get a slim model, then a super slim. I'm guessing this may happen again, but I'm not sure how much smaller they could make this thing without killing it's nice looking design. In the box you get an HDMI cable, controller, and a flimsy little microphone that is pretty sad. It's staticy and is basically an earpiece and some little box that you can't even tell is a mic. Aw well...better than nothing right? Also you get some nice little starter deals from Sony. A 30 day PS Plus membership, a 10 buck voucher for the PS Store, and a free trial of Music Unlimited.
IF YOU ARE DOING CROSS BUY PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE 10 BUCK VOUCHER! I PAID FOR MY CALL OF DUTY GHOSTS UPDATE FROM PS3 TO PS4 AND COULD KICK MYSELF FOR NOT NOTICING THE VOUCHER FIRST!
As far as user experience, the system is fast but the UI is pretty bland at this point. There's not much there. There's not much in the PS Store. You can't do anything besides gaming and watching videos at this time. You can't really customize the interface at all. There is no wallpaper mode. I can't help but feel these features will be patched in later.
YOUTUBERS- YOU CANNOT RECORD VIDEO USING HDMI AT THIS TIME. I DO YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND WAS HOPING THAT THE REPORTS WOULD BE WRONG BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET MY ELGATO TO WORK. THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A PATCH AT A LATER DATE TO ALLOW CAPTURE CARDS TO WORK BUT IT MAY HAVE STRINGS ATTACHED.
I have played Resogun and Warframe-both are free to play games although I think Resogun is only free with PS Plus membership. They are pretty good for free games. Resogun is a classic arcade space shooter that looks and sounds great. Warframe looks very good and is a good romp with 3 other random players or buddes. So far its gameplay isn't too in depth. It's a "get from point A to B" shooter. I only passed the first stage, though.
The games take up quite a bit of space on the hard drive. The digital version of Call of Duty took up 31 gigs alone. I would suggest upgrading right from the start if you plan to do a lot of digital downloading.
Social media is integrated heavily. Facebook and Twitter options are available. Also Twitch and UStream are integrated for sharing videos. There are already lots of videos in those sections to check out other gamers and their experiences with the system. You can show your real name and Facebook account profile picture IF YOU CHOOSE. It can be public, private, or friends list only. There are lots of customization options when it comes to how much you want to share online. Parental controls are here as well to stop the kiddies from logging in when you don't want them to or getting into those online lobbies full of cursing "gangstaz".
For 399 dollars, I couldn't be happier with what I've purchased here. I feel this is truly next gen gaming and I've only played a few launch games. Killzone makes me pause and marvel at the level of detail and lighting effects. And the scary thing is it is only a launch title. Games have all been in full 1080p. There has been no "up-converting". I can really tell the difference. The frame rates have all been 60 fps. Whereas the PS3 was console that hit right in a transition period, where no one knew where gaming was going as far as high def and networking, this is a fully-realized true next-gen console that takes full advantage of high def televisions and pushes out graphics in eye-popping detail.
The only con for me, and I'm in the minority, is that I truly loved the classic DualShock controllers. I thought they were perfect. Well, the triggers on the DualShock 3 did suck, but if they had simply put the DS4 triggers on the new controller and kept the exact same design otherwise, that would have been great in my opinion. I'm sure I'll adjust but it will definitely be missed. I even like the old analog stick shape better than this new indented style. Remember, this is personal preference...the controller is GREAT and very comfortable.
I can't wait to see what future games do with the hardware. Maybe it's because I've been gaming since the NES era, but I have been nothing but impressed with the visuals I've seen out of these launch titles. I've seen a lot of bashing going on...mostly from PC gamers and people who I must assume have not seen the system in action. A lot of these early reviews probably have tons of trolls hanging around leaving fake comments and low ratings just because they happen to be XBox fans or PC fans or just plain internet trolls. I truly feel we are in for some amazing experiences this generation and that Sony has learned a lot from the mistakes last gen.
