Now for the criticism: Like most electrical gizmos, it produces heat and this drive can get hot. With other external hard drives (not this one) if the drive overheats it can sometimes loose the data; again I have not experience this with this drive. However, I am cautious about where I keep the drive when it’s turned on (just my experience). To access the unit from PC’s (using Windows Media Player) or WD HD devices, you simple connect to the Wi-Fi SSID (name customizable; of course) and its basically business as usual. For iDevices and Androids you need to download the app. This is actually required so you can configure the device. Since I had both iDevices and Androids configuring was not an issue for me. I am sure Seagate must include a PC\Apple based software configuration tool, but that is an assumption. From the iDevice perspective, the interface is clumsy (unusable; barely) and not intuitive. I have to click on stuff several times to get myself re-acclimated to things I need to do outside playing music and videos. The device does come with sample videos to test the unit. HOWEVER…if your media is not formatted to play on *your* media player; the device will not play *your* content. For the non-technical, this means anything you buy on iTunes is good, anything you create on your own (ripping DVD’s or Camcorder movies in .MPG or .AVI) might not be playable…for iDevices think .MP4 or .MPV video formats. It should go without saying you can download media player apps to play content; however IMHO the new standard is .MP4 and iDevices play this format natively. Same thing with Windows; if you have Windows Media Player but you don’t have the MKV codecs the HD video won’t play. If you have no idea what I am taking about…well, a codec is software that allows you to play videos that were formatted using a specific compression technique like MKV. Rather than me explaining codecs, Google “codec” and you can read all about it. For me, I have gotten in the habit of re-coding all my media to MP4 standard; it’s not a big deal to me (I use Handbrake) and in the end…it just works.
The battery life on the hard drive unit could be better; I typically see 3-5 hours when multiple devices are connected (playing different content at the same time). I have experienced several times the video playback on my iDevices will simply freeze. Trying a hard shut down on the drive is problematic. The only button on the unit is the power button. Intuitive nature tells you to hold the button down on the unit to hard shut it down…but this doesn’t always work for me. Instead I reboot the iDevice, reconnect, then access the administrative features of the client software and send command to restart. I do not know if this is an iDevice issue or a problem with the hard drive’s firmware. I would classify this service interruption as very annoying; but I would still by the unit…when it works…it works well. The range of the Wi-Fi is pretty decent…When I go camping with friends and their campsite is a little ways away from ours, their kids can still connect and watch videos. Oh one more thing that I find irritating. When the unit is connected to a PC\MAC the Wi-Fi capability ceases to function. I don’t know if that is a by-design feature or an oversight; none-the-less you can’t copy or file manage your content and have the unit stream media at the same time. Again, something I have learned to live with.
Overall recommendation: Yes, worth the money if you are looking for a portable media server for your portable devices
I can’t wait to see what other manufactures do to keep up with this.
So, that's just shutting it off. I have a MacPro with the latest Mountain Lion and I have an IPad 3 and a Galaxy S3 phone, that's why I bought this unit, for it's wireless capability. The usb works fine, I was able to see the drive and place files from my Mac to it, no issue there. Now I want to do it wirelessly, I unplug the usb and let it the unit show me the blue and green light. I download the Seagate Media app from the App store for my I pad and then from the Google Play store for my android phone.
I can see my Seagate as a network in my Ipad3 (and even on my Mac Pro) but not on my phone. Ok, I'll deal with that later... really want it to work for my iPad3. So I click on my Settings/Wi-Fi/ then see Seagate showing in my networks... it sits there trying to connect and it sits there, never connecting. I figured to reboot all my systems and try again... still won't connect. I uninstall and reinstall my SeagateMedia app on my iPad... still nothing. My Mac Pro also sits on trying to connect, nothing.
This unit works fine as a 1TB unit but where is the wireless connection portion? I see that Seagate responds to reviews but please DO NOT refer me to a page in your User manual, I have looked at it several times today, from Page 1 to the last Page. Your customer service is closed on weekends, not helpful. I will try to call your customer service during the week but it's frustrating to buy this $200 unit and it will sit on my desk until Monday not doing what I bought it for. I will gladly change my rating once I can get the wireless part working.
*update 3/26/13*- I spoke with the Seagate Customer service this morning, they were awesome! Seems to be an issue with my Wireless plus, it wouldn't take the Firmware update. So I am sending it to be replaced via the warranty and getting a new one. Once I receive it and get it working, I will update this review with my results.
*Update 5/24/13* I received the new Seagate end of March and it worked perfectly, no button issues. I was able to return their defective device very easily. I still could not get my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy 3 to find the device. Customer service was very helpful but it seems to be an Android issue BUT then today there was a Android version 4.1.2. update and now I can connect to my Seagate Plus! Works awesome! LOVE this device. Yes, it's annoying that I can't upload stuff from IPad to the Seagate but really that is the only thing I can now complain about. Very happy customer!
