Easier to Use than Expected

Easier to Use than Expected
First thing I did upon receiving the drive was to load my (almost) entire movie, music, photo, and ebook library onto the drive. (The *entire* collection is well outside the 1TB realm.) Transferring just under 1TB of data using the USB 3.0 connection took a moment shy of forever (roughly 23 hours--delays likely added since some files were transferred from different external drives) and I monitored the drive's sound and heat level throughout.Overall the drive was quiet, and although it did heat up, it was still comfortable to the touch--enough to hold it without discomfort. One thing I did note about the drive is there's a cover over the USB adapter and it can easily get lost if one isn't careful since it's not actually connected to the drive in any way.Moving right along, I followed the instructions included and quickly had the drive connected to my home Wi-Fi network within 5 minutes, and my iPhone was the first device I connected to the drive. I was worried I would no longer have internet connection on my iPhone since the drive requires you join *its* network, but it behaves like a proxy. And true to its statements I was able to view movies, listen to music, and even read files via the Seagate App. (When I connected with my computer, I was able to view the files/folders without the need of a Seagate software intermediary.)Next to get set up was my Android tablet. OK, while I was able to get it connected to the drive's network and access the internet, I noted that there was a definite difference in how the files could be accessed and even had trouble reading and viewing a few of the files and I couldn't control the music player via Bluetooth using my tablet like I could with the iPhone. Just as an example, I have both my iPhone and tablet connected to a Bluetooth speaker. While I streamed music via my iPhone connected to the drive, I could control moving from song to song/playlist without incident. I was unable to do so with my tablet, although using the internal music player my speaker *could* control moving between songs/playlists. At the time of this writing, it seems an App update has cured a few of those problems, I'm still noting that the Android app is a bit less polished than the iOS app. That said, accessing the files on the drive over the network was spry--didn't note any significant lags or hanging while streaming large movie files, even when multiple devices were accessing it (though I can't attest to anything over 3 devices streaming at the same time). The drive itself is small enough to fit easily into a laptop bag or an oversized tablet sleeve. The only real downside is the range. Granted it's probably not intended for long distance, but I noted a significant drop-off in signal strength when I moved about 40 feet away from the drive (i.e. walking with my tablet from the office to the kitchen). After using the drive for a few months, it seems solid, and definitely offers some added convenience for streaming (if you don't already have a media server setup).
