Me First!: A Modern Day Fable about Service, Scouting, and Self-Esteem Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 60 ratings

Me First! tells the story of Baden, a selfish eagle who annoys friends, family, and neighbors as he always demands to be first. Baden's behavior makes others reject him, so that he ends up feeling sad and lonely. He is helped by a group of glowing, golden eagles who serve others in the School of the Woods. These scouts help Baden to discover the rewards of putting others first through cheerful service. Baden goes on a personal journey that leads him to help others and feel good about himself.

Me First! was written by two brothers, one who recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and the other who currently is working on his Eagle Scout project. As the boys were born and raised in West Virginia, images of Appalachia are evident throughout the story, along with symbols representing the principles of scouting. Me First! is an excellent gift for young girls and boys (ages 5 to 9) who are starting their own scouting journeys. Parents, teachers, church volunteers, and scout leaders will enjoy the included “Search and Find" activity where children look for scouting images hidden in the beautiful illustrations. Within this colorful and humorous fable is a touching message about values, particularly the importance of serving others.

About the Author

Danny and Will McNeil are high school students and members of Boy Scout Troop 44 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Danny recently achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and Will is actively working on his requirements for Eagle. Both boys have been inducted into the Order of the Arrow, a national scouting organization devoted to providing cheerful service to communities. The McNeil brothers wanted to write a children's book about scouting and service, as these activities have helped them to develop friends and feel proud about contributing to their community. They hope that Me First! will be read by Cub Scout packs, Brownie Scouts, children's church groups, and local elementary schools to encourage young children to get involved in service activities.

I loved this book. It was a surprise to me to like it so much. The first thing I really liked is that the authors are two high school aged brothers - and they published a book! How great is that? The second thing that stands out is that it's a good story - I actually wanted to continue reading and find out how it ended for the main character, Baden. Not only did I want to learn how it ended, but I learned what his journey was and THAT was so relatable, even though I have no connection with scouting.

I learned more about scouting by reading Me First! and by studying the illustrations. I especially liked the golden glow Baden the eagle gained and that it was really an inner glow, as it was only visible when he saw his reflection in a puddle. Yet the community responded better to him when he was helpful and put others first - that was how his glow translated to them.

These young authors were able to take a simple concept and translate it into a delightful story that reached me spiritually and emotionally, and inspired me in my work with young people. I will share this book with young and old "kids," as it brings hope that good choices are possible and healthy interactions are just a choice away.

"Me First!" is a nicely illustrated story about a baby eagle who learned not to be selfish. It is a nice story with a good lesson and when you end the book you learn that the book has also has a built-in game! The authors of this book are high school students - very impressive! The book is well done, fun, and we enjoyed it.

Me First!: A Modern Day Fable about Service, Scouting, and Self-Esteem by Will McNeil (Author), Danny McNeil (Author), David Demby (Illustrator) is about Baden, a selfish eagle on a personal journey to learn how to improve himself and his relationship with others.

It's for children ages six to eight. I gave it four stars. There was a typo at "The School of the Woods" on the sign showing "All Are Welcome."

Baden was loud and disrespectful. He shoved everyone out of the way when Mama eagle brought food. When his sister fell into the water bowl and cried he mocked: "Me first. Back in line. Watch me shake my big behind!" This was repeated several times. Later he changed his tune.

My favorite little boy especially liked the picture of when the animals were hiding at the kick ball field.

Good lesson for young kids with a nice message and cute drawings. The story could have been a bit better but a nice effort from the buoys who wrote it!

I pulled this out during a rainy event and the kids were held captive. Great engaging story. Kids enjoyed the humor. Will be pulling into our Cub Scout program annually.

All too many people nowadays (young and old alike) are very much like Baden -- and no amount of training induces them to improve. For those who want to improve, this book -- as short as it is -- teaches several points that, if applied, will help anybody become more generous.

This story " Me First " brings the real meaning of what Scouting all about. As you read Me First the book shows
that a Scout has to share and get along with others. This story line should be a common thread in all the various groups of Scouting.

Boring and not in good taste. Twerking and manners don't mix. Learn how to write better books or get out of writing books.
