Do you ever wonder where you fit in? Do you sometimes get that feeling that you have something much bigger to offer the universe, but then it fills you with fear and anxiety, so you think maybe I’ll just pay it safe? But what is safe? The factory job? The cubicle job?

Factories all over have been converted to open spaces for startups. Skyscrapers have entire floors open for lease because the “same as everyone else” class of jobs have dried up. Many of us were raised to seek out a job that required us to fit in, to conform, to adapt until we fit the mold.

The Freaks Shall Inherit The Earth is a guide for the kind of person who wouldn’t normally pick up a business book.

The personal business revolution is upon us. Here’s your recipe book for starting your revolutionary business, including some of what you will learn:

  • How to be as weird as you want while providing a viable business structure to support it
  • What most people are missing from the basic frameworks of doing business
  • How to turn passions into businesses
  • How to build out the Digital Channel
  • What Kickstarter and Square mean for the future of business)

Take the plunge. Learn to fail and then win. Dare to do something that “everyone else” doesn’t. The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth will help.

Bestselling author and successful entrepreneur Chris Brogan explains step-by-step how to build your business from the ground up, all without compromising the unique mindset and personal values that make you a freak in the first place.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Have you ever felt like you don't fit in? Have you had that feeling like "I really think business would work better if we treated it more like THIS?" Do you wish there was a better way to do what you think needs doing in the world?
You're the freak I've been looking for.
The premise is this: it's a book on how to do business for those of us who aren't built for the cubicle farms, who yearn to do things our own way, or at least do things in a much more human way. There are some basic business fundamentals in here, thrown alongside some novel ways to approach tasks and goals. I promise, this isn't your typical business book.
If you're the online type, we use the hashtag #proudfreak to talk about this book and just to connect with each other (note: some people who aren't talking about the book use this hashtag and sometimes, it's a little ... interesting).

This book explains in part what I think is coming next (heck, what I think is already here but people haven't yet fully realized), and it's also a guidebook for how you might do something with that information. I believe the factory/industrial mindset of the last 50+ years is about to swing towards something much more customized, much smaller, and where it'll matter a great deal more that you connect with the people who help you feel like you "belong."

This is a "do" book, not a "think" book.  Be warned. Calling all freaks! Join us.

From the Inside Flap

Turning passion into business while still being as weird as you want

Bestselling author and successful entrepreneur Chris Brogan has created a real-world business playbook for everyone out there who simply doesn't fit in. In recent years, the business world has changed dramatically, and there have never been more opportunities for the freaks, weirdos, and misfits among us who are unwilling to conform to traditional business structures and career paths. Disruption has become the norm in business. But this doesn't always mean massive and world-changing disruption. Sometimes, it just means that the world is a bit more open to conducting business the way you'd prefer to do it these days. The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth turns conventional business wisdom upside down and shows the freaks among us exactly how to make their entrepreneurial dreams a reality.

Are you a freak? This books help you to answer that question and to embrace the fact that you think differently from most business professionals. Chris Brogan explains how to harness the power of thinking differently to overcome your fears of entrepreneurship, establish a structured vision for your venture, and begin your journey toward making your business dreams come true.

With a straightforward approach and inspirational examples, The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth pushes readers to take the plunge into entrepreneurship and explains how to truly enjoy the adventure, even if the first attempts fail. The book also offers insights and ideas for Employeepreneurs, the people who prefer to focus their creative and innovative abilities on making their employers the best they can be.

Even though freaks, by definition, think outside of the box, the author points out that entrepreneurial success still depends, to a large degree, on establishing the proper structure for your venture and committing to a system of work that will ensure consistent productivity. This book helps you understand how to build the right structure to fit your personality and your business model, and also offers specific insight on how to market your business and to leverage the power of communities of like-minded freaks.

The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth takes readers from a promising idea to a functional business venture, all without compromising the unique mindset and personal values that make you a freak in the first place.

"The Freaks" by Chris Brogan was a treat. A book aimed primarily at the apprehensive "on-the-fence" entrepreneur, it still held some nice gems, and reminders for more seasoned business people. Though I'd recommend it primarily for an intro audience.

Throughout the book I'd say the tone was one of a pragmatic cheerleader. He's encouraging in having you look at the possibilities before you in business, but it is tempered with some sensible caveats. As an entrepreneur I found it refreshing that he avoided the sometimes goofy platitudes which permeate some similar books. Instead of the "never quit" mantra, he explains (correctly) that sometimes it is a very good idea to quit.

He does his job in pointing out, as the title suggests, that fitting in isn't much of a strategy anymore. If people only got that from the book, it would be worth the read.

On the negative side, I thought it was a bit long. However, I think that my familiarity with many of the topics were the key drivers of that feeling. For the uninitiated, it would probably feel fine.

The tone is easy, conversational and approachable. Which considering the subject is pretty much dead on. You don't encourage someone into the idea of business with a dry textbook format. It was good work to keep it feeling light as many people have fears regarding trying something new.

For anyone thinking about starting a business or embarking on a more uncharted course in their existing job, I'd highly recommend the book. It's not a point by point guide, but rather outlines the higher level thinking of what makes going into business a viable idea.

As Brogan correctly points out, you don't need to know everything about business to run one. (that's why there are accountants and lawyers) But you can use his enthusiasm to really get thinking about your options. No matter what you decide, you'll get some insights from the book which should be helpful. Easily worth the price.

Chris Brogan's latest book is absolutely worth reading. Like many other authors, he explains a little about where he came from and how he has gotten to where he is in his business, with Owner Media Group. He describes both his victories in business, as well as some of his mis-steps. But the key to "Freaks" is not that he gives you a blueprint for being an entrepreneur, or even an employee, which he does do. The key is that he gives you a blueprint for being successful in just about anything you might want to do.

Some of my favorite quotes:
"The number-one mistake I see most fledgling freaks make is that their business model is flawed. This happens quite often: misunderstanding who is the best possible buyer and setting up a business around a buying segment that isn't interested or able to buy your product or service."

"Let me be clear: You will not inherit the earth, nor you will be successful at most anything, if you can't figure out and master time. Not manage it. Managing is something miserable that people do when mastery isn't possible. Master it. Own it. Make time your big brother. You can do it."

"Curiosity. Superpower . Magic. Try new things. Learn new things. Learn what else you don't know. Learn tons more than the other person about whatever makes your senses tingle."

"If you intend to fall in love with not knowing, you're going to have to fall in love with failure— because failure is a huge part of that. So let's think about what we need for this “love” to happen."

"When people ask me how I was able to do everything I wanted to do in business, I tell them that a lot of it had to do with my mind-set— a common theme of the previous chapters. But truth be told, I think the other really big distinction that let me build a business of my own choosing and inherit the earth is that I created interesting media that people read and responded to, and that drove business to me. That's the secret sauce."

Chris tells you how to develop discipline, how to take care of your willpower, how to manage your time, and how to take action, among many other things.

The most important thing that Chris talks about, to me, is the type of community you want to build, and be part of. Where you belong, and who belongs with you. Business is like all of life; it's about relationships. And besides giving you great advice for setting yourself up for success, Chris explains how you can find the other "freaks" who resonate with you, and what you can offer each other.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know how to set themselves up for success, whether in business, or just in life.

Like some, I've sporadically followed Chris's writings online for some time. When "The Freaks Shall Inherit the Earth" was recently dropped as a recommended title on one of the many writing-related podcasts I listen to, I knew it was due time for me to devote more than a few spare minutes to what Chris has to say. I'm glad I did. After reading the summary of the book on Amazon, I already felt like Chris was talking directly to me, one freak to another.

After poring through the book and digitally highlighting more than usual for the Kindle titles I own, I realized that much of my business-minded meandering over the last year was caused by both a lack of a system and ill-defined, or even undefined, goals. "Freaks" is an easy read, but if all you do is read it and move on, you've missed the point. Brogan's words require action on your part, and you would do yourself and your business well to at least try some of his ideas. I know I'm going to.

Disclosure: I've been a fan of Chris' work for a while now and have been taking some of his courses for a few months.

This book is another gem from Chris. It gives us permission and tools to be different, to stand out, to follow an untrodden path. I always find inspiration in Chris' work and this book is no exception. There's no bull either, he tells you to take ownership, get off your backside and get on with it without excuses ... or don't and achieve less than your potential.

The only problem with this book was that I had to regularly stop reading it to make notes about how I want to work hard at becoming the proud freak I want to be.

I initially bought this for my son who is studying game technology at Uni and has lots of ideas but not sure how to make it happen and I knew a traditional business plan book wouldn't cut it. I started to read it as I was travelling to visit him and decided to buy it for myself. It's a great book for freaks of all ages!

I've been a fan of Chris' writing for ages and this is my favourite book of his so far. It's as if he somehow wormed his way into my brain (in a non-creepy, non-sci-fi way) and figured out exactly how to write a book geared towards me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly different approach to business
Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2014
A good read with some ideas that that have galvanized me into action. Not all of the book is applicable to everyone and the author acknowledges this by suggesting you skip chapters that do not apply to you. Some of the book is a little repetitive and seems longer than necessary but there are definitely some nuggets of wisdom here. He certainly has done well by business plan. Interestingly he plunges into business and learns as he goes, with none of the tiresome analyzing a project to death before launch. He claims to fail in more businesses than almost anyone but learns from these and spends continuing resources on only the enjoyable successes. The freedom of that approach gives me new impetus to begin those projects I was previously agonizing over. His time management practices should be a lesson to the all (certainly where I work).
