Editorial Reviews
Review
"The analysis of dictatorship has been a glaring gap in the public choice literature. Ronald Wintrobe's fine book admirably fills this gap." Dennis C. Mueller, University of Vienna
"...there is a wealth of insight here for everyone interested in probing the depths of the political id..." Leonard Dudley, Canadian Journal of Political Science
"The book explores both the politics and the economics of dictatorships and the interaction between them...It also provides a guide to the policies that should be followed by democracies moving toward dictatorship." The African Sun Times

It is a little out of date in terms of the practical examples and could do with an update. It does not deal with North Korea, many Middle Eastern States nor China. However the models it describes are still applicable as is the case study of South Africa under apartheid, which provides an elegant interpretation for the understanding of the State of Israel.
It is a "must read" for anybody interested in developing a theoretical framework for understanding political developments anno 2011 - 18.
NOT recommended if you are a novice reader to the field.
