'Field of Heroes is a powerhouse of action and war, with an intrinsic dark humour reminiscent of Iain M. Banks. Very highly recommended.' - Andy Remic.

Craig Saunders is the author of around fifty novels and novellas, including the Amazon bestseller 'Vigil'. As 'Craig R. Saunders' he penned the seven-book fantasy saga of the world of Rythe, beginning in 'The Outlaw King' and culminating with 'Beneath Rythe'.

Since his first novel acceptance 'Rain' over ten years ago his short fiction has been published in periodicals, magazines, podcasts, 'Best of' anthologies, and his novellas have won a couple of awards. He's been a top 100 bestselling author in horror, fantasy and science fiction categories on Amazon, but it isn't the New York Times so he doesn't make a big song and dance about it.

As Craig Robert Saunders he is the author of 'Field of Heroes', 'Hush' and 'Lore' - space opera, space fleet and space marine stories. Some of his favourite modern science fiction comes from Neal Asher, Andy Remic, Iain M. Banks, Dan Abnett and Richard Morgan. As a reader he's a sucker for a great robot or a smart ship. His proudest moments to date are rare praise from NYT bestseller Tim Lebbon who called 'Xenophobia' 'Entertaining, shocking and brutal' , Andy Remic for 'Field of Heroes', which Andy described as 'A powerhouse of action and war reminiscent of Iain M. Banks.'

Craig publishes science fiction with Severed Press. He also publishes novels independently under the Dark Fable Books/Fable Books labels and considers himself a hybrid author.

Craig writes in a shed and blogs about writing and his ongoing battle with schizophrenic affective disorder and he is a fierce advocate for mental health rights.

'Saunders is fast becoming a must read author...' - Scream.

[Bloodeye] '...razor-sharp prose.' Wayne Simmons, author of Flu and Plastic Jesus.

Craig Saunders has written a brilliant collection of short stories, refreshingly creative, intelligent, and twisted. What more could a girl want? There really is no weak story in the bunch but Mudman, Grass Can Be Weeds To, The Allotment of Time, 4 Degrees of Separation, The Body in the Bed, Love is Like That, Sunday Night Seance Club, The House of Dreams, and Insulation are fresh, different, and eerie. More times than not, I finished a story with a smile on my face, the writing drawing me into the mind of Craig Saunders, letting me play in his dark passageways and surprising me with his twists and turns.

Craig has definitely raised the bar on what a five star review is about. Well done.

The most interesting aspect of this collection was seeing how the author grew, from amateurish, almost cartoonish horror, into something that is definitely capable of making the flesh creep. I only wish I could pick a favourite from them all, but I can't. The bonus material seemed sort of unnecessary to me, and the last one (about things on the wall) was badly written.

Maybe its because I'm not english but these stories and I mean every one was lost on me. The characters spent so much time repeating themselves and why at the end the explanations? They only lead to more confusion and the stories did more than their share of that. I can see why many of them were rejected. They are too hard to follow and the plots are not defined clearly and then its the end of the story. With a little work good things could come but I will not be reading this author again.

A funny little short story. A nice change of pace. I like to read a short story after reading 3-4 novels and this one was one of the better ones

This is collection of stories is so varied in direction and style that it'll have you wondering if only one author actually wrote them all. He manages to change rhythm and technique with such fluidity that I can only doff my hat to him because he is either exceptionally talented or has multiple personalities.
As ever, with any collected works there are good stories and bad, however, to be fair, I wouldn't have called any of these bad, and in my humble opinion and some of them are excellent.
If you like anthologies, if you like horror and you like good writing, it's well worth the money.
Five stars for the psycho neighbour alone, though the others are good too.

This book is horribly written. I know it is just short stories, but none of them make any sense and are very difficult to follow. I have to reread the beginning once I finish so that I can halfway understand the plot of the story.

This is an eclectic collection of short stories. Some are scary, some are eerie and some are downright bone chilling.

From the deadly creepy Mudman to Slate, this collection of stories does not let up on the heart pumping adrenaline ride. I enjoyed every one. I tend to read antho's at night because it's easy to read a short when you are falling asleep.......at least that's what I USUALLY do. Not so with these! I was kept awake, heart thumping, deep breathing, jumping at every shadow. I totally recommend this antho and introduce Craig Saunders as the next big thing in self-publishing.

The stories for the most part are very dry. There was a few stories that were okay. I didn't even read the last story because I just couldn't put myself through the torture of reading another one.

I found this collection a pleasant change from the usual blood splattered collections of short fiction. Some of the stories do seem to leave the reader hanging, but having read Dennis Etchinson stories in the past, this is something you can learn to love. Certainly an author to watch out for in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection of shorts
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 9, 2012
This is an interesting little collection of short stories on a wide range of subjects. This is a real mixed bag of styles and subject matter from the weird and creepy to more thought provoking tales. My favourites of the lot were Mudman and Insulation, but there really isn't a bad one in there. I really enjoyed dipping into this collection to read a couple of shorts at a time in between reading longer books.
