Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. The seed germinates best when daytime temperatures are between 60°F and 80°F.
Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

Product Description
Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair Bermudagrass is a revolutionary grass seeding product designed to fill in bare spots on your lawn. This Bermudagrass seed grows in tough conditions, including scorching heat, dry areas, high-traffic areas and on slopes. Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair consists of high performance grass seed, continuous release fertilizer, and super-absorbent growing mulch material. Scotts® EZ Seed® Patch & Repair Bermudagrass also includes a tackifier to help reduce seed wash-away and a protectant to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases. There are three easy steps to success: 1) prep the area by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil, 2) evenly apply EZ Seed® so the area is mostly covered but bare ground is still visible, and 3) saturate with water until no more water is being absorbed and mulch turns dark brown. Plant when daytime temperatures are between 70°F and 90°F with no danger of frost. For best results, water when mulch turns light brown to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.

Grass seed in general tends to get low ratings here on Amazon, especially the varieties that are advertised to grow in harsh conditions like a typical Phoenix summer. The caveat on this is that if the conditions are harsh, it takes extra care to grow vegetation no matter how hardy that vegetation is.
This particular product, at least in the hot Phoenix sun, has a specific purpose that it works well for. Every Spring, as my bermudagrass comes out of dormancy, there are inevitably spots that don't come back. As long as these spots are relatively small and surrounded by healthy grass, this product works well to fill in those places. However, there are some specific steps that need to be taken.
First and foremost, you have to clear all of the dead grass out of the area that needs to be filled. I also find that it's helpful to get in there to break up the existing dirt a bit so that some of this mulch mix can mingle with the existing soil. Then, you have to water liberally for at least a week. Essentially, until the grass is at least an inch or two long, you do not want the mulch mix to dry out completely at all. For me, this required two daily waterings. The established parts of my lawn get watered daily during the hottest parts of the year (and every other day when the high temps are staying around 100 or less).
My results for smaller areas have been good. I have one larger area that I planted, and the result was that grass grew, but it is not very dense at all. I'm going to have to go in there with more of this product in a few days to try to fill in the bare spots because at least that area has filled in enough so that this product can do what it is good at. This gets tricky, though, because established bermudagrass does not like the excess water that it takes to get new bermudagrass to germinate. Therefore, I have to give it at least a couple of weeks for the established bermudagrass to get back to normal before I start to heavily douse it again.
My recommendation is that if you have more than, say, a 2-3 square foot area to fill in, you're going to want to get some actual seed and go through the process of thatching, planting, and dressing to get it to grow properly.
Somewhat skeptical at first reading other reviews that touted the amount of mulch compared to seed. But as you can see, the results were amazing... so much so that we’ve reordered twice for the problem areas we just couldn’t seem to fix.
Notes:
Yes; there’s a good bit of mulch. But it really does help you get much better results than if you had simply purchased seed outright. Previous attempts with straight seed have resulted, for us, in low germination and survival rates. Sure there’s a lot of mulch. But if most of the seed survives....
It covers about 400 square feet... ish. Don’t skimp. It’s meant as a patching product, not a full scale yard replacement product. If you are using it to seed large areas, get enough of the product to cover it thoroughly.
Heavy rain WILL wash it away, as it would any product. While it may not be convenient, try planting when you’ll have a week of no rain so you can water by hand. Don’t overwater or leave a sprinkler on it. It will wash away. Very bright sunny days WILL dry it out more quickly.
It took ours about four days to sprout and about six days before it became noticeable. That was done with watering whenever the mulch changed appearance.
Even seems to work very well when spread throughout areas that seem to be thinning.
Haven’t seen ANY weed seeds sprouting.
