About Gaggia
With humble beginnings as a cafe owner in Milan, Achille Gaggia's ingenuity and passion for coffee inspired him to invent a new way to brew espresso without the use of steam. That vision led to the creation of the Lampo device which produced the characteristic crema which has since become the hallmark of quality espresso.
Gaggia Accademia
One-Touch Automatic Coffee Machine
The Gaggia Accademia is one of two super-automatic espresso and coffee machines on the market with both a carafe and a commercial style steam wand. Make custom specialty drinks with the push of a button and the carafe, or on your own with the manual wand. The flow knob controls flow rate for pulling a strong espresso or lighter coffees. Remove the brew spouts for 6 ½” of space for larger mugs and to-go cups. The bypass doser allows you to use pre-ground coffee for a variety of coffee options.

The Gaggia Academia
The Pros;
Very simple and straightforward to use. Comes pre-programmed (to MEDIUM everything) so all you do is hit a button. You can easily change each coffee type settings in the nice lcd screen and adjust temperature, density, water amount, etc..
Milk container for frothing is super convenient, easy to use and stays sealed in the fridge to prevent spoiling. It also is far beyond the Gran Adamas, my friend actually doesnt use the Delonghi container because it sucks :)
I have used starbucks and whole foods premium organic beans and I have no problems with either. My favorite so far is Starbucks Italian Dark Roast. The coffee this beauty makes is amazing, the cappuccinos are very good and the brewing process is not too loud.
Machine turns on, rinses, primes and warms up FASTER than the Gran Adama and even my other friends Miele Built in cabinet(+$5000 machine) unit.
Very flexible brewing options, once you understand what it does, it becomes your new best friend for coffee lovers like me!
Maintenance elements are VERY basic. You have to empty the drip tray, grounds bin, prebrew tray and ocassionally shake off the brew-group (plastic mechanism inside)
Machine is very well built, on the heavy side, sexy stainless and looks like the money it's worth
The Cons;
There isn't many cons but here a few VERY minor things I personally would like different:
Coffee cup size = I am an IT guy and I have learned to drink coffee in GIGANTIC cups. This machine does have a "LONG COFFEE" button, but it will make an almost full regular cup of coffee (less than the 11oz size) and the regular coffee setting makes about half that. So if you plan on making TONS of LARGE coffee mugs, this machine is probably not going to work for you.
Temperature = I did see some people complain about this. First, the machine is shipped with all the temps set to medium, so you have to set it to high. If you're like my dad and you like scalding hot coffee, this machine can do it fine for as long as you dont add creamer or make capuccinos. I personally like warm/hot coffee and sometimes i will feel that it is not as hot as I would like it to be after adding a generous amount of cold creamer. The cappuccinos come out just fine but cool quickly so dont expect it to be super hot after a little while.
Maintenance = Eventhough it is very simple to maintain the machine, the fluids containers are somewhat small. I make about 10 coffees per day and I have to empty the thing on a daily basis. It doesn't bother me personally, but I do consider it a con for those who lack the will to do this frequently because the machine will stop you from making coffee if it gets full so I can see some impatient people get cranky.
Bypass Chute = This is where you would put already ground coffee in example like when you need to brew a cup of decaf for someone and dont want to empty your beans. The bypass is VERY sensitive to the AMOUNT of ground coffee you dump in there. If you get it wrong, it will simply dump out the grounds into the bin and not brew anything and tell you something about pressure problems... Depending on the grind density, i suggest LESS than the scoop provided with the machine
==========================
Overall, this thing is worth every penny. Make sure to not use tap water, set all the drink temps to HIGH/MAX and play around with each coffee button until you dial in the right amount of water, coffee and temperature. For espresso, I truly recommend Starbucks Dark Espresso Roast. For espresso and frequent regular coffee (my choice) I recommend Starbucks Dark Italian Roast. Don't be afraid, buy this over the Delonghi, I promise it is better. You will enjoy every cup and since only coffee nuts like me will pay nearly $3000 grand for a coffee maker, I bet you will run to the machine every moring when you wake up, just for another great cup of coffee... Also, if you hate manuals like me, I suggest you go on youtube and find videos, it was the best 10 minute crash course I took and it enabled me to handle the machine from the first time. Do keep the manual since it will occassionally display icons you won't understand and you can reference them in the manual. For me, almost 1 month so far and over 100 brews made (machine has a built in counter) and i am truly happy...
1) Coffee dispensing unit: It has a very cheap and flimsy plastic coffee spout that often got misaligned when you slide it up and down and coffee ended up leaking all around the "black box" with some coffee amount actually coming thru the 2 holes at the bottom of that box.
2) I kept on seeing an excessive amount of coffee grounds all over the brew unit - note that the machine was brand new, and has the same (or very, very similar) brew group as my good old Saeco and never for 10 years I saw so much coffee grounds all over the unit in my old machine. All with same Lavazza Beans I have been using for over 10 years.
3) As mentioned in other negative reviews - the water tank and bean hopper are way too small for such a big heavy machine and need constant refilling.
4) As mentioned in other negative reviews - drinks are lukewarm even on max temperature settings.
5) As I now own a Delonghi machine with LatteCrema system - its milk carafe was an eye opener for me regarding how bad the Gaggia milk carafe was - every time you try to rotate the milk spout, you had the feeling you are going to break it; it is much more cumbersome to assemble and clean compared to the Delonghi Lattecrema, and oh, yes - once the milk level starts to get low it starts spitting milk all around presenting you with a nice mess to clean - something my new carafe never does!
And now, if you can live with the above 5, keeping in mind the price of this machine, here is the main issue:
THE DRIP TRAY: Compared to other machines that have only that one drip tray under the coffee spout, this machine has an additional internal very small (10oz) drip tray that sits in the same drawer with coffee grounds container. So, this drip tray gets full after 2 double espresso shots! Or - if you turn off the rinsing of the machine (which of course is not recommended) you can make up to 3-4 drinks without the "Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container" message is displayed. One good thing I can say about this machine - it has a beautiful, large color display, but you begin hating it when you start waking up every morning to "Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container" message displayed in red on its big screen, this after making only 2 double espressos since you last saw this message!!! Followed up by "Fill Water Tank" message every other day - and the memories that it was not like that with your old Saeco are still fresh!
So, with all the issues above I truly believed that my machine is defective and spent enormous amount of time on the phone with Importika Gaggia USA support and exchanging long emails with them (as their support hours are only Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, which is very inconvenient for many working people). Initially, they were sort of helpful. I spent a lot of time following their recommendations to find the "leak" in the machine, one of them being going to buy red food color and have the tank fill with colored water over white paper towel overnight...So, after none of their suggested fixes worked, I sent them an email regarding the machine being in warranty and asking for a replacement. Again, I truly and naively believed the machine had defects. With no response after a few days, I finally called them during my lunch hour repeating the request to exchange the machine. They acted like they had troubles finding me in the system and promised to call me back promptly. In the end of the day, I received a pretty rude (per my perception borderline arrogant) email from them stating that my machine should be considered working as normal.
EXCUSE ME, IF THIS IS A NORMAL MODE OF OPERATION, THEN THERE IS A HUGE FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THIS MACHINE, IT IS A VERY BAD, VERY POOR DESIGN THAT CALLS FOR OVERALL REDESIGN!!!
So, I called Amazon right away and thanks to their wonderful customer service I was able to return this terrible Gaggia Accademia the very next day.
In the next couple of days I bought the stainless steel (compact, half weight of the Gaggia Accademia) DeLonghi America ECAM28465M Prima Donna Fully Automatic Espresso Machine with Lattecrema System from the Amazon Seller Flowmar for pretty much the same price I had paid for the Gaggia Accademia.
So far, I am fully enjoying my new DeLonghi and it has not displayed any of the above mentioned Gaggia Accademia issues. It has been better in each and every aspect so far!
I TOOK THE TIME TO WRITE THIS EXTENSIVE AND DETAILED REVIEW TO GIVE A WARNING TO ANY POTENTIAL CUSTOMER WHO CONSIDERS BUYING THIS POOR AND EXPENSIVE PRODUCT.
