Shelter (The Getaway Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Sutton Warner is a mess. Everything in his life feels like it’s unraveling.
He’s let a lot of people down lately, including his daughter. Sutton always promised his little girl he would never disappoint her and that he would always be there when she needed him. Until he wasn’t.
The truth is, he’s used to disappointing the women in his life. First was his mother who couldn’t find a reason to stick around when he was growing up. Then there’s his ex. The woman who takes unbridled delight in making his life incredibly complicated. Luckily, his daughter is still young enough to believe her old man is some kind of hero. But, he knows the day is coming when she realizes the truth, which is, he’s just a man with some serious flaws and a list of ever-growing weaknesses.
Finally, there’s the woman he’s desperately trying to forget with every shot tossed back and each pill popped.
He more than disappointed Emrys…he almost got her killed.
Her love is steady and sure. It’s a shelter shaped by conviction and silent assurance.
Emrys Santos is lost. Everything in her life feels pointless and futile.
She’s been busy running away from her feelings and all the people who love her the most—including her best friend, the one person who knows exactly what she’s been through. They promised to always stick together and to lean on one another. It was a promise Em had to break so she could lick her wounds and figure out her next move. For once, there is no easy way out of the tangled web of emotions she’s caught up in, and right now, she recognizes that all roads lead back to Wyoming…and back to Sutton.
The man she nearly got killed.
Shelter is a standalone novel, the second book in the Getaway series, which features the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women who dare to love them. These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

I am so happy that Jay Crownover decided to write this series, I can’t wait for Escape to read Lane and Brynn’s story.
So, Shelter picks up right where Retreat ended, but there’s a short recap of the events that is perfect for whoever doesn’t remember certain details or haven’t read Retreat first. Sutton is a picture perfect cowboy, a little too long perfect hair, stunning green eyes, amazing chiseled body and a very sexy backside… After all he’s been through in Retreat, Sutton is lost and he’s at a very low point in his life. He knows he’s failing his little girl but he hasn’t been able to deal with everything that went wrong and he just keeps replaying every scene in his mind, the only thing that seems to help is drinking a lot to forget.
Emrys is as lost as Sutton. Everything changed in her life, she’s not as confident as before, not as perfectly beautiful as before (even though that’s just how she feels), her life is spinning out of her control and she just can’t seem to heal. She knows the only way to move on is to return to the Warner Ranch and to Sutton.
I loved Sutton and Emrys’ story, it’s not an easy one, but it’s absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking, about loyalty, forgiveness, family, inner strength, support and love.
Shelter is an intense, emotional, beautifully written journey with lots of suspense, danger, so much steam (breathtaking chemistry!) and amazing characters that will make you cry, laugh and swoon. A highly recommended 2017 top favorite!
Salvaged is the second book in Jay Crownover’s Getaway series. The Getaway series books are inter-connected standalones, with each book focusing on a different couple. While the books can be standalones, it’s easier to understand the dynamics of the world and previous events if you read all of them, in order. Shelter, unlike Retreat, it told in dual first-person POV, by Emrys and Sutton.
After the horrible scene in Retreat where Sutton ordered Emrys to leave, I knew their story was going to be important. I just wasn’t prepared for how deeply their pain and healing would affect me. They both had been so deeply damaged and blamed themselves for the horrific situation they’d experienced in Retreat; it was a long road to a place where they could allow themselves the love and happiness they deserved. That path to healing was rough and filled tons of potholes they had to carefully navigate to reach their happy ending.
When I started reading Shelter, I did not expect it to be as suspenseful as it was. That layer of intrigue added so much to Sutton and Em’s story and allowed them to prove to themselves they were stronger than they’d given themselves credit for. When it came to the catalyst for all of the suspense, I was completely taken off guard. It was a great and interesting twist and completely unexpected.
Jay has been a must-read author for me since the second I picked up Rule. She writes such amazingly strong female leads and her heroes – while rough around the edges – have hearts of gold when it comes to those they love. Ms. Crownover’s books all have a rawness to them that makes them feel more real than some other books in the romance genre. I always eagerly anticipate the next Jay Crownover release, but I am particularly excited for Escape, the next book in this series.
I hated that I had to go to work, when I wanted to sit and read it without any breaks.
I was pulled back into the world of the Warner family, remembering the action packed story of Retreat.
Loved how close the brothers were, and not a sickly sweet way either. It was a true familial bond, only wanting to best each brother could be.
Great to catch up with Cy and Leo and to see how they were getting on in their new life together.
Emrys and Sutton, we got a brief glimpse of them together in Retreat but you would never have guessed from that, they were destined to find each other.
Sutton, the middle brother, came over as what most people would expect a 'Middle Child' to behave, not quite enough either way, in age or rank.
Cy was still a brooding man, but Leo had a way of calming him. In fact Leo brought a very calming effect over everyone on the Warner Ranch.
Sutton was dealing with some very tough demons, beating himself up about how things happened up on the mountain, he was doing a good job of running himself into the ground, forgetting he had big responsibilities, as he was missing a huge part of himself. (Self respect)
Then he had Emrys who went through the mill too, up on the mountains both of them blaming themselves for circumstances beyond both of their controls. When Em had made her mind up, she was a tornado nothing stopping her to get everything done, she wants and needs to ...
Although Em walked into a bar brawl, she went into help and survival mode, making sure everyone was OK, getting the help where it was needed.
Em had a total no-nonsense attitude making sure she finished what she started, by her own admission, she was good at running, but something or rather someone brought her running back to the Lanch in Wyoming.
Daye was such a sweetie, with a cute name. she is definitely her daddies girl although that little girl had an innocence but such tremendous strength. She was the apple oh not just her daddy's eye but of her uncles too, and now the new women at the ranch, Brynn, Leo and Em.
For city girls Em & Leo did not shy away from danger, they were both great strong independent woman, but accepted when they needed someone else to lean on.
This was an amazing page turner, where you were just as invested as Em and Sutton were.
They both learnt how they fought with their own demons, and new normal, they made great people as individuals but together they were formidable. I loved Em and Sutton, and can't wait to see how they all are getting on with their lives together with Daye.
Also can't wait to get to know more about Lake, I feel he is going to have an equally interesting drama filled life.

Emrys and Sutton both have a lot of issues to solve due to the events from Retreat (hint, go read it if you haven’t ;)) and both of them are dealing with them differently. Emrys ran the first chance she got until she realized that it wasn’t a solution while Sutton simply tried to forget his failure in alcohol and pain killers.
When Emrys finally decides to confront Sutton and wants to tell him everything she needs to tell him, she butts head with a Sutton she doesn’t know and who is hell bent on ignoring her existence. But she’s done running away and the cowboy won’t scare her away.
Sutton’s life really took a bad turn and he is in no rush to come out until it’s too late and his family finally pushes him to deal with his problems or else, they were going to take matter into their own hands. It’s the wake up he needs but working his problems isn’t easy and Emrys’ presence at the Ranch isn’t helping as she is a reminder of his failure.
But even as Emrys and Sutton’s undefined relationship starts, nothing is ever easy for the cowboy has more problems seems to follow him. Trying to deal with his issues is already hard for him but whenever something else big falls into his path, he only finds comfort with Emrys. They actually both find comfort in each other but just for different reasons. They complete one another even if they seem to be the opposite one of another.
I wouldn’t say their issues were due to a miscommunication because it wasn’t. They both carried guilt about what happened, but neither seemed to understand that at first, still engrossed in trying to subdue their own guilt. Working through those isn’t an easy path and as you follow them throughout the book as they try and you can only go through their feelings at the same moment as you get so engrossed with their story.
I’m finishing this review because I feel I might spoil it if I continue and I want you guys to discover and love this book as much as I did.
But overall, I’m looking forward to the next book and I recommend this series with the highest of 5 stars because it has everything. Jay Crownover has a way of expressing the thoughts and feelings of characters so perfectly. This is a 5 stars series for me all the way. So go grab this second book or if you haven’t started the series, go grab Retreat.
