Adventures in Slow Cooking: 120 Slow-Cooker Recipes for People Who Love Food Hardcover – October 10, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
The James Beard-nominated food writer revamps the slow cooker for the modern home cook, providing ingenious ideas and more than 100 delicious recipes for maximizing this favorite time-saving kitchen appliance and making it easier than ever to use.
Sarah DiGregorio shares the nostalgia most of us feel when it comes to slow cookers. Her first memory of slow-cooker cooking is her grandmother’s pot roast. While these handy devices have been time savers for incredibly busy lives, traditional slow cooker food is sometimes underwhelming. Now, Sarah, an experienced food professional, has reinvented slow cooking for a generation that cooks for fun and flavor, taking a fresh approach to reclaim this versatile tool without sacrificing quality or taste.
For Sarah, it’s not just about getting dinner on the table—it’s about using a slow cooker to make fabulous dinners like herb oil poached shrimp or the most perfect sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It’s about rethinking how to use this magic appliance—such as throwing a biryani dinner party with the slow cooker at the center of the table.
Showcasing a beautiful, engaging design, inviting color photographs, and 105 original, innovative recipes thoroughly tested in a variety of brands of slow cookers, Adventures in Slow Cooking provides a repertoire of delicious food for any time of day. Inside you’ll find ideas for flavorful sweet and savory slow cooker dishes, including:
- Whipped Feta, Red Pepper and Olive Dip
- Granola with Pistachios, Coconut and Cardamom
- Savory Overnight Oatmeal with Bacon, Scallions and Cheddar
- Turkey-Spinach Meatballs Stuffed with Mozzarella
- Spicy Kimchi and Pork Ramen
- Orange, Olive and Fennel Chicken Tagine
- Daal with Mango and Mustard Seeds
- Farro Bowl with Smoked Salmon, Yogurt, and Everything-Bagel Spice
- Oxtail and Short Rib Pho
- Corn, Mushroom and Zucchini Tamales
- Proper Red Sauce Eggplant Parm
- Peach-Orange Blossom Jam
- Matcha-White Chocolate Pots de Crème
- Cardamom-Molasses Apple Upside-Down Cake
- Star Anise-Black Pepper Hot Toddy
Sarah also provides ingenious tips and tricks that will help cooks get the most out of today’s slow cookers, and have them saying, "I never knew my slow cooker could do that!" With a foreword by Grant Achatz, a modernist chef and huge advocate of the slow cooker, Adventures in Slow Cooking makes this convenient appliance an indispensable tool for the modern kitchen.

I’d like to note that I don’t think it’s fair or a true review of a cookbook if you haven’t actually tried any of the recipes. The expectations of this cookbook were realistically set at the onset within it’s description - this is not a “set it and forget it premise”; it’s for foodies who love to utilize different tools and produce amazing recipes, which more often than not, do need the intervention of more than a few steps. For me, this was almost a relief - no dumps of cream of whatever soup over a rugged hunk of meat...no thank you! And a few complaints have mentioned obscure ingredients - almost all can be obtained online if not readily available, and the author kindly lists resources and websites on how to obtain many of them.
So, let me list a few of my accomplishments based upon the recipes in this book in hopes that you may want to venture out and conquer:
1. Italian Deli Mozarella-Stuffed Meatballs in Lots of Sauce: AH-MAZ-ING!!! Best meatballs I’ve ever made OR tasted; spicy, succulent, and mouth watering in every bite! PS - Impressive presentation and company worthy.
2. Spicy Kimchi and Pork Ramen: The epitome of Asian comfort food - delicious blend of flavors, and quite simple to make.
3. Banana Leaf-Ancho Chili Lamb Tacos: Holy moly what flavor, driven home by the lime and hot sauce. And look at me - I actually cooked with banana leaves for the first time!
4. Carbonara Spaghetti Pie: Made for a rich and luxurious (and thankfully easy) Christmas Eve dinner. I loved how the spaghetti had crispy, brown edges in contrast to the soft, cheesy center, adding a neat depth to the texture of the dish.
5. Smoked Salmon and Everything Bagel Spice Grain Bowl: Yum-o!! Made for a quick, delicious lunch, and my co-workers were lingering over my shoulder wishing for bites.
6. Honey-Poached Pears with Orange and Star Anise: I received an over abundance of Harry and David gift baskets this year and had to put the pears to good use. I was skeptical to say the least due to the simplicity of the recipe - and I just couldn’t believe the result. Paired with good vanilla ice cream, an unexpected result of delicious flavors - so impressed!
7. Vietnamese Coffee Pots de Creme: Beautiful presentation, so simple and most importantly a rich, “custardy”, “expresso-y” flavor.
8. Winter Tomato Sauce: Velvety and luxurious...lots of butter but very calorie worthy, and came together in a snap!
8. Smoky Chipotle Ketchup: Deliciously spicy and you can control the amount of heat...I made it super hot, just the way I like it!
9. Spiced Pumpkin Butter: Delicious on morning toast or smoothed into creamy yogurt; also simple to prepare.
In summary, this author has created an impressive line up of recipes that I cannot wait to keep tackling with vigor - I will continue to update as I go along (Eggplant Parmesan is on deck as we speak). If you are a true foodie, go for it - you won’t regret it! And if you haven’t actually tried the recipes, please don’t give the cookbook poor reviews...it just doesn’t seem fair.
