In my opinion, George is the rare artist who sounds better live than on his records/CDs. And the release of MTV Unplugged unabashedly confirms that and is worth the price of this wonderful boxed set. My issues with the MTV Unplugged release is it is cut quite a bit and those who are familiar with the original version will understand. One being the intro to "I Can't Make You Love Me" and the other being the editing of the language in "Star People". While I may not agree in "vulgarity" in music there is always a time and place for it and for the "f" word to be removed is unconscionable and unnecessary to me. While many long time George Michael fans probably have the bulk of this material, it is nice to have it all in one package.
This is a very well thought out and put together package and is an absolute must for the George Michael fan. My only wish is a DVD of the MTV Unplugged was included as it was a truly phenomenal and classic performance.
Many thanks for an incredible release from one of the greatest singers/songwriters of a generation. You and your talents are missed George. Thankfully we have the wonderful music and interviews you've given us and future generations in which to remember you, appreciate you, sing along to and dance with.

Session endlich mal als DVD veröffentlicht werden würde. Vielleicht entschließen sich die Erben ja irgendwann mal dazu. Schade, dass dieser talentierte Musiker viel zu früh von uns gegangen ist. R.I.P George
Listen Without Prejudice was a complete change in direction from pop king of the late 80’s into a soulful singing artist of the 90’s. George takes a dramatic change in direction to get his seriousness towards singing and songwriting to a level that is to be appreciated by the public, cuz he wants them or love him for his talents and not just his image. I must admit at first even I was like where’s the “I Want Your Sex”, “Faith” and “Father Figure”, but after a few listens you realise that you got more than you initially realise.
As a older and wiser person now and revisiting this album it’s the sincere songwriting, vocals and heartfelt personal issues that he is touching upon at the time and what he’s feeling and brushing off the messages in beautiful melodies or outstanding vocal performances that astound you.
George opens the album with “Praying for time”, this little gem thumps straight in like a John Lennon style of song with lyrics about God turning the other way and also us as mankind seeing what’s going on in the world around us like homelessness, etc but just ignoring it, like it doesn’t exist. A serious message song to a generation to take notice. Well crafted and orchestrated song.
Then from that we go completely into another genre, funky/pop for the awesome “Freedom 90” (called this cuz he didn’t want anyone to confuse it with the Wham! Freedom, which is a totally different song). George shows here a wider range in his knowledge of funk, booming bass lines to rendition of lyrics telling everyone that the old George is being left behind and this is now the new/real George and contains some of the famous lines like “sometimes the clothes do not make the man” and “I think this is something you should know”. It later becomes his anthem.
The third song on the album is a rendition of a Stevie Wonder classic called “They won’t go when I go”. This is where George Michael starts to show us how perfect his ranges as a singer he is, not only does he make a Stevie song his own but he also improves on it with more heartfelt emotion right through the entire song and it touches you with a raw nerve. Even Stevie Wonder himself later recalls this version better than his original.
The fourth song on the album is called “Something to save”. This is the only song on the album that resembles anything from his previous solo album Faith it’s a little dizzy just to brighten up some of the serious tones of George’s album and you can tell that this was written more in the ideals of a second faith album but fits perfectly and lightening the mood between the serious tones of the rest of the album.
The fifth song on the album is my favourite it’s a seven minute long jazz feast that is absolutely beautifully produced, written and sung by George, yet it seems timeless. It’s about chasing and choosing between two different lovers, even now “Cowboys And Angels” is Still my favourite on the album.
The sixth song is “Waiting for that day” which uses a sample of a few songs that were sampled a lot at the time, where George contemplates when trying to get over the loss of someone and pushing himself to find that someone special in his life. (funny that 18 months later he does). But nice heart warming song about moving on and believing someone special is out there for everyone.
The seventh song reflects the pain of war from a mother’s point of view called “Mother’s Pride” it is simply a song expressing the emotions a mother feels when her son goes off to war as she waves goodbye to him, not knowing if this will be the last time she ever sees him again. It’s emotive and heart wrenching.
The eighth song is “Heal The Pain”. This is a very uplifting ditty reminds me of something in the style of a Paul McCartney vein type of song it’s very catchy and just a jolly little listen.
The ninth song is “Soul Free” this little number feels like a could’ve just come off the back of a Soul to Soul club classics volume 17 album it’s got all the funk bass and drum of the early 90s feel of UK soul.
The tenth and final track is “Waiting (Reprise)”. This little closing song it’s just your singing his heart out telling us that The last nine songs you have listened to have a accumulated from the last 12 months of his life and that I’ve touched him personally and that without this he couldn’t continue to nice little closing song just reminding you of what you’re just written this album.
To the next bit of this bumper package. I have to say the additional two CDs and 1 DVD that come along with makes not just amazing album better, but makes a amazing box. It is all contained in this fabulous hardback sturdy cover and it contains some of the dance songs that was supposed to be included on the next volume of “listen without prejudice volume two”. It’s such a shame that we never got to see this fully finished project due to the legal wranglings between George and Sony Music, As I really do like tracks like “Happy” and “Crazyman dance” I would’ve just been great to see George having a bit more fun on the second album that’s not to say the volume one is in great the first five songs I’ve just told you above are absolutely phenomenal and all different in there styles but gel together perfectly.
If George hadn’t been taken as a serious songwriter before he was definitely going to be taken serious now the changing direction may have been a shock to everybody at the time with this album, but along with “Older” his third studio album, we’d have missed out on some serious calibre of music and showing us the artists need to grown by sometimes being brave enough in changing their styles and direction but not just produce what the people think the consumer wants to hear. Instead he follows his heart produces the music that himself and the public are proud of and can relate too in the underlining messages.
My only criticism of this albums limited edition is that although I love the MTV unplugged CD I don’t feel it belongs to this collection, this was recorded at the same time “Older” (his 3rd Studio Album) was released in 1996, which is where I think it belongs. I would’ve loved to have had a CD that at least had live versions of songs that George recorded or sung throughout his cover to cover tour (1991) which followed the release of this album.
Besides that it’s a classic and a awesome box set to buy. X
They have done an awesome job remastering this album. I found the original release kind of anaemic but this version has a beautiful full sound to it.
The MTV unplugged album sounds great as well, not all my favourites but good.
The third audio disc is basically b-sides and remixes. So if you had a favourite version you liked to groove to back in the day it will probably be here.
The DVD is good as well. It is basically a hour long TV special and the music videos that were released t the time, plus the 1990 Freedom remix video.
I am extremely happy with this release this record has really stood the test of time. So put your image of Micheal side and do what the title says “Listen Without Prejudice”, if you do I am sure you will be surprised!
My LP copy came yesterday and it sounds awesome. Really clean vinyl with a very full sound! Could not be happier with product!
