The Hookup (Moonlight and Motor Oil Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 5,628 ratings

When the new girl in town, Eliza “Izzy” Forrester decides to hit the local drinking hole, she’s not ready to meet the town’s good, solid guy. She’s definitely not prepared to engage in her very first hookup with him.

Then Izzy wakes up the next morning in Johnny Gamble’s bed and good girl Izzy finds she likes being bad for Johnny.

Even so, Izzy feels Johnny holding her at arm’s length. But Johnny makes it clear he wants more and Izzy already knows she wants as much of hot-in-bed, sweet-out-of-it Johnny Gamble.

Floating on air thinking this is going somewhere, Izzy quickly learns why Johnny holds distant.

He’s in love with someone else. Someone who left him and did it leaving him broken. Whoever was up next would be runner up, second best. Knowing the stakes, Izzy will take what she can get from the gentleman that’s Johnny Gamble. And even knowing his heart might never mend, Johnny can’t seem to stay away from Izzy.

Until out of nowhere, his lost love comes back to town. He’s not going back, but Johnny still knows the right thing to do is let Izzy go.

And Izzy knew the stakes, so she makes it easy and slips through his fingers.

But that’s before Johnny realizes Eliza moved to town to escape danger that’s been swirling around her.

And that’s why Johnny decides to wade in.

That and the fact Eliza Forrester makes breakfast with a canary singing on her shoulder and fills out tight dresses in a way Johnny Gamble cannot get out of his head.

About the Author

Kristen Ashley is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She grew up in Indiana, but has lived in Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus she’s been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least), but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multi-generational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland and existed amongst the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, living in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Adorable sweet loving romance in classic KA formula

Adorable sweet loving romance in classic KA formula
3.75 stars 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘂𝗽 by Kristen Ashley is the first book in the 𝗠𝗼𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 which only has two books. Meet the town resident “perfect guy” Johnny Gamble and town newcomer Eliza “Izzy” Forrester. Johnny’s character was much softer than KA’s other alpha heroes in the best ways. I’m not a fan of bossy alpha without the sexy parts. While being much of the same formula Kristen Ashley uses in her plots, I did enjoy this book a lot. So much so that I purchased 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗻, the second book, even before I finished this one.𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘂𝗽 is told in dual POV with Izzy’s being first person and Johnny’s being in third. I like when a man’s perspective is in third so that was a plus for me. As Izzy’s first ever hookup, she wakes up in stranger Johnny Gamble’s bedroom. After spending some time with him, she really likes him but gets the feeling that this guy, Johnny Gamble is only in it for casual hookups. To me it seemed right off the bat that he liked her but he did have this cold vibe. We later find out the drama that comes with that and why he is the way he is.Johnny is the sweetest and most loving guy once he actually decides to go for it with Izzy. That takes its sweet time but it’s angsty and adorable. This is definitely one of the sweetest KA books I’ve read and I love Johnny. The way he treats Izzy is protective and loving. There were times where I felt bored because as I said, it did follow the classic KA formula where someone gets kidnapped, someone needs to be rescued, a man leaves his no good of a woman ex but we see all sides. In a way, I respect KA for always writing what she feels to be true. Still, I did wish sometimes she could switch up her plots.I was absolutely loving this at times yet bored at others. Still, I wouldn’t have been bored if I never read a KA book. There are adorable moments and lines that make your heart stop. There are relatable family aspects especially if you grew up poor.I’m moving onto Slow Burn so clearly, I loved it enough to not be able to not finish.

I’ve never made a secret of Kristen Ashley fandom. This author has had a profound effect on me as a reader. Her books had such a tremendous impact on me and are the ones that began a voracious, insatiable love of romantic fiction. That love, and the need I felt to satiate it, started me on a journey that, several years ago, I had no idea was even possible. Yet here I am, and I can trace it all back to that day in 2012 when I picked up my first Kristen Ashley book.

So, fast forward five years, and I’ve read the vast majority of her books, and many of those books, I’ve read more than once. At any given time, you can look at the first page of my Kindle, and there will be a KA book on that page in process of being read. It seems that most days I find myself reading at least a few of her words. I may only be able to sneak in a favorite scene, maybe just a chapter or two, or if I’ve got the time, I’ll allow myself to get lost in the story and reread the whole book. So, I consider myself a devout fan, I hesitate to use the word authority, but well, five plus years of reading and rereading these books over and over again has given me a solid understanding of her writing style, her characters and her stories.

I preorded The Hookup, but I’d been saving this book for a time that I could luxuriate in it, take my time with it and enjoy it. Read it purely for the pleasure of a new KA book and of reading. That time came for me this weekend. From the first page, I was hooked. Drawn right into this new KA world of Matlock, Kentucky, I was riveted in place and forcing myself to slow down and enjoy the story, not devour it like the starved fan that I was. It was a struggle, but I did it, and I’m so glad that I did. This book was…. everything I went into it hoping it would be.

If you’ve read KA’s previous works, specifically her Colorado Mountain, The Burg, Dream Man and Chaos series, you know she’s got a vibe. There is something special about the way she pours all that alpha-male goodness onto the page and mixes it with just the right heroine into a story that is pure magic. So, it thrills me, it thrills me, to say that this series has kicked off with a book just like that. Swooning in my seat, firmly rooted in place, I took in the awesomeness that was this book with a happy, racing heart.

Johnny Gamble was a perfect KA hero. Loyal, sweet, sexy, decisive and as alpha as they come, this man was all man, and the kind of man who when he loves, does it hard. Eliza Forrester, Izzy to her friends, may not have had the easiest life, but her optimistic spirit gave her the natural ability to make the best of any situation. These two sizzled from the start, and their chemistry leapt from the page. Even though the attraction was strong and there from the beginning, this was no whirlwind romance, and I absolutely love, love, loved every minute of the build-up of their relationship. A dash of suspense, an in-your-business small town and a cast of side characters I loved, The Hookup was the full package of KA stories with a compelling love story, an interesting plot, characters I was invested in and a setting I can’t wait to visit again.

The Hookup was a fantastic start to a series that felt familiar and comforting, while still managing to pull off being new and exciting. I cannot wait for more, and I hope that KA will give it to us soon in the form of Toby and Addie’s book. The Hookup by Kristen Ashley gets five smooches from me!

The Hookup is the first book of a new series called Moonlight and Motor Oil. The book is set in Matlock, Kentucky, USA. The main characters are 34 year old Johnny Gamble and 31 year old Eliza "Izzy" Forrester. The book opens with the 'morning after' their hookup.

The Hookup was written in non-alternating, dual POV. Izzy's POV is told in first person. Johnny's POV is told in third person. Izzy has most of the chapters in the first half of the book and Johnny has the chapters at the end of the book.
The chapter breakdown is as follows:
Izzy: Ch. 1-4, 6-9, most of 10, 11, 13, half of 14, half of epilogue
Johhny: Ch. 5, some of 10, 12, half of 14, 15-19, half of epilogue

Before the book was first released I read the blurb and liked it enough to add to my TBR but by the time I one-clicked it, I didn't remember anything about what this book would be about, so I went in blind. I am glad I did that. It was fun to be surprised.

I loved the characters in this book. Johnny was perfect. Too perfect to be real, but just right for my fictional needs. He is my current book boyfriend. *swoon* I need a moment to daydream. ...................................................*sigh*.......................................................
Okay I'm back. Seriously though, I love Johnny. He was kind, considerate, honest, loyal, protective; everything good. Immediately, I was drawn to Izzy because I could relate to her. I saw a lot of myself in Izzy and I loved that. Her propensity to overthink, analyze, and obsess over what something means or a conversation or an action that someone took was like looking at myself when my brain won't turn off. Her thought process was written in such a genuine and believable way. I also loved that she had a bunch of rescue animals. I do too. I loved that she is the one to worry about and take care of others. Surprise, surprise- I do that too. Obviously, these characters really worked for me.

I really enjoyed the story-line, beginning to end. I pretty much read and listened to this book straight through. I think I enjoyed this book more from a voyeuristic standpoint than anything, because there wasn't a whole lot of action. The main sources of drama were resolved about as quickly as they happened so it was more just watching them live their day to day lives and develop a relationship. And you know what? I was fine with that. Sometimes, I just enjoy being able to vicariously live someone else's life.

Oh, I would be remiss to not mention the sex. I loved the sex scenes. They were hot hot hot. I was listening to the book in my car when one sex scene came on having to do with some butt stuff. I was sitting at a stop light and looked over to see the person in the car next to me giving me a weird look. My windows were up but theirs weren't. Not sure how much they could hear but AWKWARD.

This wasn't quite a 5 star book for me.
Some of those reasons are:
-the writing didn't always flow well or make complete sense at parts. There were several parts that I had to re-read to ensure I understood what was said, many of those parts were excessively wordy.
-the back and forth about vegans and vegetarians - we get it, your mom was vegan (though KA missed the mark on that because a militant(as she put it) vegan would never use honey and bee pollen to make face masks-so that was a bit of a fail) and you were vegetarian for a while but can't do it now. There is no need to consistently bring up throughout the book that you enjoy meat and this wouldn't work for a vegetarian or vegan. Just eat your meat and continue on.
-I wish we were able to see more of his business and how he's making so much money.
-The epilogue wasn't enough for me. I want to see more of the future not just what is happening in the now. Maybe this was done intentionally because the next book will show us more of them and give us some updates?

Just as a heads up, looking at the blurb now, it is a bit misleading. This book is nowhere near as dramatic as the blurb makes it sound.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading The Hookup. I loved the characters and really liked watching them fall in love. I look forward to finding out what book two will be about. I want to read about Johnny's brother, Toby, and Izzy's sister, Addie, so badly, so I really hope book two will be about them.

Also, I really love the cover for this book. It totally fits Johnny and his family.

Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. I think both narrators did a really good job and were easy to listen to and understand. I recommend this as an audio book.

The Hookup - well, this book certainly got me hooked and not only on this book but I had to go straight back online and get another book by the author!

I can't even say what exactly made this book so special, I think I fell for the hero and the heroine right from the start even though the hero's problems sometimes made me a bit annoyed. He was hung up on a memory and I was furious that he didn't see, well...
Izzy was just someone that I'd love to get to know and hang out with. I love her attitude, the way she cares for others and her inner strength that made her overcome everything that she experienced in her childhood and hold on to the good things that happened.
I loved to see Johnny getting drawn in by her and never really understanding what hit him. He tried to resist, he really tried. And failed.

Those characters, as well as the minor characters, are multi-layered, interesting and authentic, they are not perfect, they are flawed and they certainly don't hold back on the f-bomb front and there's also explicit sex, so if you mind any of those things, well, this might not be the book for you. Otherwise, I can just say that this book drew me in from the first page on and I simply couldn't put it down. Needless to say that that was a really really short night that day...
I can't wait for the second book in this series which will be out at the end of April!

It’s days like today, that are few and far between, that I’m glad I can’t work, because it meant I got to spend all day on the sofa reading this book from start to finish in one go.

From the title I assumed there would be lots of sex, and there was. It was hot, well written and very believable. But the story was about much more than sex, it was about people. It was about a fabulous man, Johnny who works a mechanic in one of the 7 garages he own because he loves working on cars but hates running companies. It was also about Izzy a beautiful woman who learnt how to stretch money so far it squeaked from a difficult childhood lived with a single mother and her sister, after they ran away from their abusive father.

They met and the same night they ended up in bed together - The Hookup. This is the point where we enter the book, the moment they wake up after their night together. From that point forward the book is all about discovering what they want for themselves and each other. It’s about how the past effects the present but it doesn’t have to dictate it.

I really love Kristen Ashley. I love the fact that her characters are usually not going through their first serious relationships and have life experience. I love the fact that her characters are not one dimensional. They have jobs, they have hobbies, they have friends, families and pets. They live within communities and those communities have a role to play within their relationship.

I love this book so much, because it’s a Kristen Ashley book through and through, and if you are a fan, you know what I mean. There is a strong alpha male and a strong independent woman, both with flaws, who work their way through their problems with the help of their loved ones. They face a few crisis’ some not of their own making and some that are, and everyone comes together to solve them. However, the strength of Kristen Ashley’s writing is that even though the hero and heroine are both of a type, they are not carbon copies. Each one is unique and the people in their lives are unique. The way they love is not, but the people are. This means though you know what you getting, you don’t know how you are getting there.

It’s wonderfully written and the characters are people I wish I knew. They live in a place I wish I lived. A small town with forests around it, where people can camp, hike and fish. People can have horses and dogs and there is one bar where everyone goes, so everyone knows your business. I honestly think this is one of the best books she has written, which is high praise considering the other books she has in her back catalogue.
