I like the option to save on shipping by filling them myself, BUT.....

I like the option to save on shipping by filling them myself, BUT.....
I go camping with a large group every year and take a week's worth of food to the campground. I read the reviews on these highly rated cooler ice packs and decided to give them a try. Been there done that with bags of ice, multiple trips to the grocery store to replenish them, and the mess they make as they're melting in the coolers. So I purchased 12 of the large Cooler Shock packs for my 3 coolers, and decided I'd go the cheapest route with bags you have to seal yourself. It seemed pretty straightforward. If I had to do it again, I'd go ahead and get the ones with the screw cap to save myself the aggravation, but I did manage to get them all mostly filled and sealed. Along the way, I learned a few things I thought I'd pass along.Since I had so many, I thought I'd make an assembly line of the process and fill them all with water before moving on to the ironing step. Things were going pretty well, and I feel like I got most of the air out of most of them as I closed them up using the ziplock type closing. But I made the mistake of stacking them flat on top of each other on the counter as I worked. That was my first mistake. (see 1st two pictures) The weight of the filled bags was too much for the ziplock closure (which is only meant for a temporary seal until you can get the bag sealed with the iron) and one or more of the bags popped open and spilled out contents as I added weight on top of them. Didn't notice this until I was nearly done with the 12. So if you're going to wait any length of time before sealing them with an iron, store them upright, like my 3rd picture.Next, when it comes time to clean and dry out the area between the flaps where you'll be heat sealing, do so very gingerly. Don't swab inside there with with a heavy hand and a dry rag thinking the bag is sealed tight. It is very easy to pop that ziplock seal open when you're running your towel edge against it in between the flaps. Finally, if, as you're inspecting the bags one last time before heat sealing, you feel there might be a sizable pocket of air left inside, be careful as you open the ziplock seal to release it. The gel will have already begun to swell up and take on water and in squeezing out the air, it's easy to squeeze out globs of gel beads into the area you'll subsequently be applying heat to. It's much harder to clean out gel globs from this area than it is to just dry excess water from it. Better to be extra careful to squeeze out air during your first step than to have to deal with the already swelled up gel globs. Now, I can't speak to how well these ice packs actually work, since I haven't used them yet (camping trip isn't for a couple months yet) but I will update this review when I do. I just wanted to get my experience with the prep work recorded while it was still fresh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked perfect for a extremely unusual use

This will sound exceptionally odd, but... After our family dog died, we decided to have him freeze dried, a method of permanent preservation. This required freezing our dog and keeping him frozen until he could be transported and delivered to one of the few places in the country that performs this service. I used a large standard Coleman type of cooler (not one of the expensive YETI type of coolers). Despite how weird you think this sounds, it was very important to keep him frozen solid until we could deliver him over 600 miles. I was not confident that ice would keep him properly frozen. I purchased 6 of these Cooler Shock packs about a week prior to the travel date.

We made the packs up based on the instructions. Overall they were quite simple to make, but it helped greatly to have 2 people to complete the process. One to hold the pack upright and one to pour in the water. Once filled and zipped up, I used a hot iron to make the final seal as instructed. We allowed the packs to sit to gel up and then put in the freezer the next day, about 4 days prior to the travel date.

On the travel date we loaded my fully frozen dog, along with all Cooler Shocker 6 ice packs. I put a digital thermometer in the cooler next to my dog (not touching dog or ice pack) to monitor the temperature. It read 17 degrees. By 18 hours later (about how long it took us to travel the 620 miles) it read 23 degrees. The packs where still frozen rock solid. I don't know how long they would have kept him and cooler below 32, but I suspect it would have stayed below 32 much longer.

As of the time I'm writing this, the ice packs have been out of the freezer and in the cooler for about 27 hours and are still rock solid. I'm looking forward to using these ice packs in the future and saving money on buying ice. These would have definitely have worked for transporting ice cream or anything else that had to stay below freezing. I used an inexpensive cooler also, with a higher grade / more professional cooler, I'm sure you would get even more time with them.

EDIT: We have used the ice packs multiple times in the past month. I'm very impressed with them. We have used 2 to 4 packs in a standard cooler in our car trunk. You have to be a bit careful because they will easily freeze things solid. We have mainly used them on day trips and put them back in the freezer overnight, but have also left them in the cooler overnight and still found them and the cooler very cold. I really like them a lot, I'm finding them far easier and much less messy than ice.

I purchased 6 of these packs at full retail price. The company did send me a note saying they would send me a small ice pack if I made a review. The small one may be good for a more luck box size of container.
