1. How long will it keep frozen foods frozen?
A. Sorry, but it depends. It depends on the type of cooler you use, how big that cooler is, how hot the environment and how long will it need to keep things frozen? Here's what I've used these packs in.
I have a Coleman Marine 70QT 5 Day cooler. The more frozen stuff you have, the better any pack or ice will work. I typically use my cooler to transport groceries from the city an hour away back home. My cooler is stuffed with both frozen and cold items. I'll take my 3 Cooler Shock packs with me frozen solid. If cooler is too full, I'll take out one or two packs, but try to leave at least one in. I can easily go 4 hours in summer heat and my frozen stuff is still frozen when I get home.
2. How long does it keep things cold?
A. I also have a Polar Bear soft cooler, the 24 can version. If I use two Cooler Shock packs frozen, it will actually start to form slush out of my cold soda cans. It works that well. I can keep cold things cold for at least 2 days in my soft cooler with two packs as long as it's not directly in the sun.
In my Coleman Marine, with nothing in it but just one ice pack, it takes about 3 days for it to no longer feel cold. This is at room temperature. That's pretty amazing! I remind you, the cooler is completely empty of anything else!
--------------------------------------------------------
I have not used it in any extreme way, so can't give feedback there. Here are a few other things to note:
o The shock packs are big. It will eat up space in your freezer. It will eat up space in your cooler. It has the surface area of a legal sheet of paper. It is as thick as a 3 standard Blu Ray cases stacked, and that's if it was frozen completely flat and level. When frozen bent and out of shape, it will take up more space.
o The size works well with bigger coolers. I find 3 packs are typically enough for my 70 QT and I'll need to take one or two out sometimes. With less loads, I'd even want 4 or more.
o It takes some effort to start using these packs. Go out and buy 2 gallons of distilled water (~$2) from the grocery store. You can use tap, but then have to wait 24 hours. With distilled you can continue setup process right away.
When pouring distilled water in, be sure to shake out as much air as possible before closing. Go slowly and get all the air out. You actually want to have a little water pour over right before that last seal. Be sure to dry it up. Lay it flat on a hard surface to make sure all the air is out. Repeat if still air bubbles in pack.
After sealed and all air is out, iron ends as directed. Then shake and let sit 20 minutes for pack to gel before freezing.
It's worth the effort, but know you do have some work to do.
o If you leave a frozen pack out, it will form frost and as it melts, it will make a wet mess. Keep these stored frozen, or keep in something waterproof until pack is at room temperature.
o Overall, these Cooler Shock packs perform as advertised. They are very effective, much better than the blue packs. I've never had an issue of leaking as the mylar case is very strong, though not cut or puncture proof. Use good sense.
--------------------------------------------
I highly recommend the Cooler Freeze Pack as an ice or blue pack alternative. Be aware of the size and how you want to use it and you will be happy.
Disclosure: I will receive a bonus for writing this review. But as you can see, if that alone were my real motive to give this positive review, I would not have waited 9 months! This review is my honest opinion and experiences with the product.
We made the packs up based on the instructions. Overall they were quite simple to make, but it helped greatly to have 2 people to complete the process. One to hold the pack upright and one to pour in the water. Once filled and zipped up, I used a hot iron to make the final seal as instructed. We allowed the packs to sit to gel up and then put in the freezer the next day, about 4 days prior to the travel date.
On the travel date we loaded my fully frozen dog, along with all Cooler Shocker 6 ice packs. I put a digital thermometer in the cooler next to my dog (not touching dog or ice pack) to monitor the temperature. It read 17 degrees. By 18 hours later (about how long it took us to travel the 620 miles) it read 23 degrees. The packs where still frozen rock solid. I don't know how long they would have kept him and cooler below 32, but I suspect it would have stayed below 32 much longer.
As of the time I'm writing this, the ice packs have been out of the freezer and in the cooler for about 27 hours and are still rock solid. I'm looking forward to using these ice packs in the future and saving money on buying ice. These would have definitely have worked for transporting ice cream or anything else that had to stay below freezing. I used an inexpensive cooler also, with a higher grade / more professional cooler, I'm sure you would get even more time with them.
EDIT: We have used the ice packs multiple times in the past month. I'm very impressed with them. We have used 2 to 4 packs in a standard cooler in our car trunk. You have to be a bit careful because they will easily freeze things solid. We have mainly used them on day trips and put them back in the freezer overnight, but have also left them in the cooler overnight and still found them and the cooler very cold. I really like them a lot, I'm finding them far easier and much less messy than ice.
I purchased 6 of these packs at full retail price. The company did send me a note saying they would send me a small ice pack if I made a review. The small one may be good for a more luck box size of container.
