Richard Linklater’s incomparable three-part romance and meditation on time

Now available in one box set

The cornerstone of director Richard Linklater’s career‑long exploration of cinematic time, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, and strains over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke imbue their characters with a sense of lived-in experience, and age on-screen along with them. The Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life.

Director-Approved Special Edition Features

  • New, restored versions approved by director Richard Linklater
  • New discussion featuring Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke
  • Behind-the-scenes footage and interviews
  • Two documentaries, and a video essay
  • Episode of the radio program Fresh Air featuring host Terry Gross, Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke
  • And more!

Product Description

The cornerstone of the career-long exploration of cinematic time by director Richard Linklater (Boyhood), this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, strains, and settles over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke, who cowrote two of the films, imbue their characters with a sense of raw, lived-in experience, and as they age on-screen along with them. Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life.

I remember seeing Before Sunrise for the first time around 2005. It was a movie you had to pay attention to, or you'd miss a quip here or there. It helped that the actors in the movie were closer in age to my generation. I remember picking up a DVD copy of Before Sunset in 2007 because that's the year my mother passed on. I was also beginning to date a woman who I would go on having a serious relationship with. Maybe it was because my emotions were riding so high with both events that this movie became my favorite between the two.

******Spoiler****** When Celine sang that song to Jesse at the close...wow, what an ending!

When I heard they were finally working on the third film, I was ecstatic. I also knew this would probably be the last we would see of Jesse and Celine. As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I eventually found a DVD copy of Before Sunrise, but at this point Blu-rays were the thing. After Before Midnight was released on Blu, I wanted to wait until a trilogy of some sort was released. So I waited, and waited, and even started wondering if it would ever be released. Finally those of us fan boys and girls have our day! What a beautiful set with extras to keep you occupied for hours. As with most in demand Criterion releases, I would snap this one up as soon as you can, because it may disappear into that sunset before you realize.

Richard Linklater brings real life to the big screen. These movies might transport you into a fantasy world, but at the same time you will never relate and understand a pair of characters more than these two. I would definitely recommend all three of them.

I went from "this is kind of pretentious..." to "this is the BEST trilogy I have EVER seen!" I can't think of a series of films that better encapsulates 20 years of love and life. And it's mostly through dialogue! What amazing writing! Before Midnight has one of the most compelling "couple fights" I've seen in cinema.

It is difficult to even know what to say.. If you love these films as I do then you will love the Criterion treatment. Criterion did not artificially sharpen or upscale the transfers, they took great care to preserve the qualities of each film as they were shot. Color and grain density and quality are fantastic, BUT if you are expecting some super sharp HD transfer, that is not on offer here. Having said that these 3 films have never looked better.. EVER..

The extras, Criterion's true calling card are magnificent as well.. If you love these films as I do then go ahead and pull the trigger, you won't be disappointed over the next years as you re-watch them and some subtle insight you did not pick up before in an early viewing (or an earlier point of your life) will be revealed. Like all great literature, these change in their dynamic meaning at different points in your life.

Of all the romantic films/romantic comedies ever created, this one has the best acting, realism, and the best script ever. I cannot give this set of movies enough stars.

It’s evocative, incredibly acted, and almost TOO real. This set of movies is almost more real than real life in the way it communicates a lifetime of love and longing, sorrow and desire, loss and heartbreak in a series of 2 hour keyhole glimpses into the lives of strangers who quickly become as close as family. Cannot recommend these films more. They are truly masterpieces in every conceivable way.

I won't review the films themselves because they are simply beautiful and everyone should watch them at least once in their lives.

On the other hand, the product itself could improve a little bit. The artwork and the little booklet inside of it are gorgeous and I have no complains about them whatsoever . The features included in the DVDs are also great. However, what actually kind of deluded me was the quality of the cardboard cover that keeps everything together: it was very weak. Since it was a 60 dollar product I think that Criterion could have used a slightly better material.

Leaving that aside, I definitely encourage whoever who wants to own the Before trilogy on DVD to buy this version because it is undoubtedly the best one on the market!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compatibilidad precio/calidad
Reviewed in Mexico on September 29, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars Best. Trilogy. Ever.
Reviewed in Canada on August 31, 2017
My favourite trilogy ever, and that includes the Godfather, Star Wars or Star Trek 2-4 and I very much like those movies. Boyhood did one story over 12 years, but Linklater, Delpy and Hawke have created two characters being revisted 9 years later twice. First meeting on a train and a romantic night in Vienna, then in the sequel remeeting after novelist Jesse (Hawke) writes a novel about the night in Vienna and Celine (Delpy) goes to the Shakespeare Book store where he's doing a book signing, and they spend eighty minutes reconnecting before Jesse is supposed to catch his flight home. The third is (spoiler alert) after they've stayed together in Paris, and the natural issues in a long term relationship. It's primarily dialogue thoughts on love, relationships, death, life in general. Great dialogue, performances and some very funny lines. And the extras in the Criterion Collection are entertaining, informative about Director Linklater and his work, and the film transfers to Blu-Ray, beautiful. I highly recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best trilogy!
Reviewed in Australia on June 12, 2021
This might be my favourite trilogy ever made. Richard Linklater has created a masterpiece of cinema that is absorbing in its simplicity. Superb performances by Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke draw the viewer totally into the world of Jesse and Celine.
And as a Criterion set, it is even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance done right
Reviewed in Canada on September 2, 2020
This trilogy of movies are some of the best made ever, let alone of Linklater’s filmography. These films are not much more than simple conversation, yet it’s conversation so engaging and so engrossing that it easily holds your attention for the entire runtime. If you’re at all interested in romance, drama, or film at all, you can’t pass these up. This criterion edition is fantastic too (as always), coming with a book about the films and beautiful mastering and packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trilogía de conversaciones
Reviewed in Mexico on November 17, 2019
