These songs are overt in their religious content and fervor. No one is asked to like it, nor even agree with any aspect of it. That has never been Dylan's style. The evidence of his non-caring is not a recent affectation. He goes electric at Newport. (So leave.) England calls him a traitor. (He labels his critic a liar.) Music goes psychedelic. (He goes Nashville.) Even today, he covers the American Songbook. (I say P-U. Bob ignores me totally.)
So if you can forgive Bob for overtly praising a higher power, then your reward will be in this world. (I claim nothing for the next.) Lyrically, a few of the songs get a bit preachy, but the musicianship and vocal power save (sorry, again) most of those numbers. The good news (double plus sorry) is that Bob steers clear of modern praise music cliches. The song may have a solid rhythm, but it is not chock-a-block four on the floor. The lyrics are thoughtful and have a point, not pablum and drivel. The vocalists can do more than chant monotonously without inflection or harmony.
I do not expect many to change their mind about Dylan's Christian music and these supporting tour recordings. Gospel musicians have recorded many of these songs and have issued a disc of nothing but Dylan's gospel music. That recording solidifies these songs as bona fide Gospel music.
Rock and Roll music and musicians have had a tough time with religion and religious involvement since Little RIchard got off the airliner and threw his diamond ring into Australia's Sydney Harbour as he renounced R&R to become a preacher. His audience, his manager, his record company, and many others were not sure what to make of this. Richard returned to popular music, but he still retains an allegiance to a higher power. Bob and many, many other entertainers have tried to split the difference between sacred and profane. Many fail to accomplish any part of that with as much style, musicality, and grace (not sorry at all) as Bob Dylan does on these CDs.
The two included discs are the first and second of the eight discs (plus one documentary DVD) included in the deluxe set of "Trouble No More". In some cases the live performances differ significantly from the versions on the studio albums of the period, "Slow Train Coming", "Saved", and "Shot of Love". They also differ concert to concert, so that each of the two discs begins with "Slow Train", and there are also two versions of "Solid Rock". Songs on these discs come from a great variety of concerts in the U.S. and Europe. I found it extremely helpful to read Bowman's insights about musical nuances prior to listening to the tracks.
The second disc includes songs not on those three albums: "Ain't Gonna Go to Hell for Anybody", "Ain't No Man Righteous, No Not One", and "Blessed is the Name". "Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar", while not on the record of "Shot of Love", was added to the CD release of that album, and the song also appeared on the "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. 3" CD, although with different lyrics than in the live performance here. "Caribbean Wind" previously appeared in the five record "Biograph" set.
"Saved" is one of my favorite albums. Third Day covered the title song on their "Offerings" album, and a number of gospel groups contributed their renditions of Dylan songs to a collection called "Gotta Serve Somebody: Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan". But Gospel music was meant to be live, as it is here. Gospel blues gave us rock music. On "Trouble No More", Bob Dylan returns the favor.
