SPECIAL 30th ANNIVERSARY TRIPLE DISC EDITION OF THE DEFINITIVE DOOM METAL OPUS FROM THE SWEDISH LEGENDS, INCLUDING UNRELEASED ALTERNATE ALBUM MIXES & REHEARSAL TRACKS
Marking 30 years since its original release comes the definitive edition of one of the all-time classic metal albums. Candlemass, formed by bassist and songwriter Leif Edling in Stockholm, Sweden in 1984, is well known for its influential Epic Doom Metal sound, which itself evolved out of the masterful Black Sabbath.
'Nightfall' was the second Candlemass studio album, & saw its release in 1987. Alongside first album 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus', 'Nightfall' was instrumental in shaping the Doom Metal scene that exists to this day. On 'Nightfall', making his debut with the band was vocalist Jan Alfredo Marcolin, better known as Messiah Marcolin, who became a well-established and highly respected vocalist throughout the Metal world, with his powerful soaring and theatrical tones. Messiah Marcolin became an iconic figure within the band until his departure in the early 1990s.
This deluxe anniversary edition includes previously unreleased alternate rough mixes of the album tracks from the studio sessions, plus a rare rehearsal recording from 1987 featuring renditions of tracks before the album was put to tape. The 16-page booklet contains text recounting the events of the period from the recent 'Behind the Wall of Doom' book release, plus new liner notes from Leif Edling himself, with his thoughts on 'Nightfall' reaching such a prestigious milestone, and its own place in metal history.
'Nightfall' is a continuation of the band's debut; with highly effective epic and melodic heavy doom compositions.
'Nightfall' truly helped define the genre and paved the way for Doom Metal's future, with bands such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride often hailing Candlemass as being among their primary inspirations.

This is part of three excellent albums put out with Messiah as singer (Ancient Dreams, Tales of Creation and Nightfall) Anyone who's into metal and sick of symphonic/technotronic/synthesized modern metal needs to grab these three doom metal epic albums and just blast them all one after another after another. And yes, this is the same review I'm putting up for the other 2 in the "series" but it's because they all really need to be bought and listened to together...

Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom.

Absolutely one of the best doom metal albums of ALL TIME, kids. Ya wanna know what the doom metal genre is, heres your capitol album. It is so haunting in nature, it inspires dread, despair, sadness, and the glory of God all in one album. Wicked and enchanting, this is Candlemass at their best.

For those fans who remember Candle Mass, then this is the album for you, every one of the songs is done with a great haunting and powerful black metal sound. The sound quality is a little less than fantastic, but it does not take away from the obvious dark overtones the music was intended. The song Well of Souls has a hauntingly dynamic sound which leaves you wanting more and more of this band. A great collectors item. A cannot miss for metal/doom heads of past years!!

I didn't get Candlemass back in college. Their name made me expect something very different than their sound and I turned them off in disgust. Then, I was cruising the Internet a few years later and watched the video for "Bewitched". It was such a glorious train wreck I couldn't stop watching. On repeat. For days. And the song stuck with me. The riffs. Oh man those RIFFS. How could I have missed those riffs? Those fills! The song was more epic than the video and it turned the whole of Nightfall was as well. This album is amazing. Worth owning in as many formats as possible.

Vor allem, weil "Dark are the Veils of Death" die düstere Stimmung weiterträgt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doom on You !

Candlemass produira bien d'autres albums recommandables (
