Red Night: A Vampire Files Novel #1 Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,425 ratings

★★★★★ "A good book draws you into the story so that you feel a part of it. This is one of those books."

A world where dreams turn to reality and shadows hold untold secrets…
I never used to remember my dreams—until I crossed paths with a vengeance-seeking vampire who cannot grasp the concept of 'personal space'. Don’t believe the lies; They don't require an invitation
.

As the youngest private investigator in the city of Phoenix, I assumed I'd seen it all. That was before I learned about the creatures lurking below the surface of human society. It could be contagious, because since discovering vampires exist, I can't stop dreaming of things I shouldn't have knowledge of.

Without intending to, I've become a supernatural magnet for TROUBLE, learning way too much about the others. Trust me—you don't want to know.

If meeting an annoyingly beautiful vampire and lifelike dreams weren't enough to lose my mind, I've won the lottery of the unlucky by landing on the top of a supernatural killer's to-do list. Did I mention it’s been a rough week?

My barely there dating life was already hanging by a thread, I'm failing Paranormal 101, and I can't figure out who the good guys are—if there are any. Nobody is who they seem.

I'm in over my head and wondering if an ordinary human can survive this game played by beautiful monsters—without becoming one.

In this pulse-pounding tale of Paranormal Romantic Suspense and Urban Fantasy, Samantha must navigate treacherous and seductive waters if she wants to survive and save those she loves. Will she recognize love from deception, trust from betrayal, before it's too late?

“Vampires in Phoenix! Binge worthy story with a twist that ensures the reader will feel like they are part of the story. If paranormal is your choice in reading, this book will quench your thirst, and if it isn't, it will be.”Reader Review

Oh, the sexual tension!
"Red Night - A well written, humorous, romantic suspense filled with interesting characters, both funny and menacing. The book starts a little slow, but kicks into gear and is hard to put down. There's a twist or two adding to the excitement and the humor never leaves the pages. I laughed out loud numerous times, the suspense and intrigue are great. The reactions of the female character are realistic and I appreciate her thoughts and morals. Hooked and looking forward to reading Red Moon, the second book. For those who care, there's no sex or vulgar language." ~ Texason, Reader Review

Couldnt put it down.
I love books that grab your attention from the very beginning. This is one of those. Our witty heroine is in way over her head in chapter one and she knows it. And I love Samantha Chase. She's not your typical paranormal leading lady. She's smart and confident, and while she does have thing for *ahem* questionable men, who can blame her?? Adam and his blue eyes lost me a whole day at work! This book puts a new spin on the old tale of the undead, so if you love all things succubus...be sure to read it!

Who doesn't like, even savor, the possibility of having more abilities than we do now? That is my draw to the paranormal fiction genre.
To me, the best books—like this one—include ample scenes of the experience of having paranormal abilities. So wonderful! I will be getting the rest of this series.

Writer RK Close's excellent character development, plot development, plot twists, and pacing had me hooked deep into this tale. While this story arc resolves--and not in the expected way--there are plenty of secrets remaining.

There is minimal to no vulgar language, no sex scenes, and while there is violence, it is not what I would label graphic or detailed.

Happy reading!

Sam is a strong character. She meets Adam who is a vampire. Together , with Gabe a vampire killer, they are out to destroy a murderous vampire. I like the plot and characters . There is action. Sam is strongly attracted to Adam and Gabe. Sam comes to grip with the knowledge vampires really exist. This is different from other vampire stories I've read. I will be reading the rest of the series.

I'm an enthusiastic vampire fan. It's fair to say that I've loved them long enough. I've seen many an iteration of the children of the night; from mindless beasts to those who sparkle and subscribe only to animal blood.

It's been a while though, since I found vampires that follow the cardinal rule: a balance between reason and savagery that allows a monster to pass for human before our very eyes.

R.K. Close gave me those vampires, and a little more. "Red Night", the first book of the Vampire Files introduces us to Samantha Chase. Sam is smart, independent and blessed by both common sense and the initiative to sign herself up for an adventure, if needed be. That serves her well, since she is a private detective.

Used to cases that mostly involve infidelities and other relentless pursuits of the careless, Sam seemed to keep a steady schedule of cases solved and new clients walking in... Until she stumbled upon the impossible.

Vampires. They are real, and in no way what she expected.

In comes Adam, tall, dark and deadly. For any other woman, this might spell doom. But being Samantha Chase... Well, our vampire ends up signing in for more the he bargained for.

The book is a fast paced, entertaining read that paints a believable picture of the other side of existence as supernatural elements weave themselves into the mundane. Soon our Sam will discover that there is more than meets the eye. Friends and neighbors reveal unexpected secrets and those handsome new acquaintances with dead cold stares are bent on dragging her into a centuries old vendetta that can only be settled in blood.

There is a natural flow of dialogue and action that helps along suspense of disbelief. To read "Red Night" is to instantly connect with its main characters, their reasons, and motives. (If you are the kind of person that likes their bad guys plenty, be happy. I'll let you in this one: Adam is a "good guy" you need to be wary of and Zachariah... Well, that one you'll just love to hate.

In summary, if you love your paranormal with a dash of thriller, a bit of romance and well crafted monsters... If you are not much into a damsels in distress and rather have a woman who won't hesitate about rescuing herself... If you are willing to step into a world that promises more than just blood suckers (the vampires are superb, but there is so much more!)... Then this book is for you!

Fantastic story that is an action-packed adventure full of mystery, suspense, romance, and humor. Samantha is a P.I. who inadvertently snaps a picture of a vampire which opens up a whole new world and brings danger to her door. The vampire, Adam, tracks her down to see just what she saw and finds that he's drawn to her. But this puts Sam in even more danger because there's a vampire killing people in her town. Then there's Gabe, her neighbor and crush, who turns out to be a hunter of bad supernatural beings. So you've got a love triangle but despite their hatred of each other the guys both agree that Sam needs protection. All the characters have great depth and you learn more about them each as the story progresses. Who will Sam choose? How will they defeat the evil vampire? What will be left when the dust settles? The ending will have you rushing to pick up the next book in the series to see what happens next to Samantha.

Audio version review:
Having read the book, it was a delight to hear it brought to life. The narrator really nailed the characters and their complex relationships and put plenty of emotion into the story. It was a little rough at the start but quickly improves yet there are still a few times when a character is speaking and it sounds a bit mechanical or robotic and flat. The story itself is full of action, mystery, suspense, romance, and even some humor. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the series!

Okay. Frankly, I'm at about the midpoint of the book, and I just can't keep going. I'm bored.

I go to the kitchen to get a glads of water. Adam approaches me so fast that I don't have time to blink. I throw my hands up to stop him getting closer...

I wish I could describe it only the best I can manage is to say it reads "chppy" or stilted. Basically paragraph after paragraph of detail like taking a shower, brushing teeth, and other unnecessary details that no one wants to read about. One dimensional and no character development. She talks about how hot they are as if this is supposed to "flesh" out a character? I find myself not even remotely connecting to her or finding the scenes steamy and I believe they are meant to be. Chemistry! There is none for me and I don't actually feel like its there between the characters. Of course they would need to feel less flat for that to work.

Some editing errors that stuck out all the more because I was trying to force myself to keep going. I need more world building and character development and its just not here. Sentences read like perhaps this was written for a 12 year old. I don't know maybe it gets better but I think I'm going to DNF just like I did the first time I tried to read. Had to be sure!

Everyone has secrets, including the heroine Samantha Chase. Sam poses as a telemarketer to her friends but in real life, she is a private detective. Investigating what appears to be a run of the mill cheating spouse case, Sam stumbles into more secrets than she bargained for. Vampires are real. And that is just the opening chapter! What follows is an enjoyable mixture of romance, intrigue and suspense, everything you want to find in a good book.
