As beautiful as sculpture, as fascinating as chemistry, and as entertaining as theater, this coffeemaker from Switzerland converts the ordinary process of brewing coffee into an artful performance. And it makes six 5-ounce cups of full-flavored coffee while it entrances. The coffeemaker fits together like this: water goes into the carafe, a filter fits into the mouth of a tube in the top globe, ground coffee goes into the globe (a scoop is included), the globe fits atop the carafe with the tube extending into the carafe, and the carafe goes onto the stovetop with a trivet or heat diffuser between it and electric or gas heat. (This is all much simpler and quicker than it sounds.)
Water boils up through the tube into the globe and brews the coffee. When brewing is complete and the carafe has been taken off the stovetop and set into its accompanying sculpted trivet, the coffee drains through the filter into the carafe. The globe can then be lifted off the carafe and set on its stand, and coffee can be poured from the carafe, which has a stay-cool handle. A stopper for the carafe keeps second cups warm while the first cups are sipped. Fully assembled, the coffee maker stands 11-1/2 inches high. It's made of heat-resistant glass and durable, gleaming nylon, and all parts are dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I read previous reviews where folks were saying that their pot exploded, etc - my personal opinion is that, if used as directed, this will never happen. The coffee maker works off of water vapor pressure, so if you're mindful when making your coffee I don't think you'll have problems. I've been using mine for about 3 weeks and I have zero doubts that my unit will malfunction.
I've experimented with the process and the chronological steps and will share it here - it works well for me. I will add that I like very strong coffee.
1. First, fill the decanter with purified or spring water with the number of ounces of water of your choice. Place the decanter on the heat source and turn the heat on to medium.
2. Grind the coffee using the coarsest "French Roast" grind. My favorite full-bodied coffee is Peet's Major Dickason's Blend, a dark roast. It and other coffees can be ordered online from Peet's Coffee. I like Peet's because they roast, package and vacuum-seal your coffee and send it out the same day. You receive very fresh coffee in about 4 days. Fresh coffee is critical in this process.
3. Insert and secure the upper bowl to the lower decanter using a small amount of pressure to make sure the fit is good. Make sure you have already inserted the plastic filter into the upper bowl before securing the upper bowl to the decanter.
4. Add the ground coffee to the upper bowl. I use 1 tablespoon of coffee for every 3 ounces of water; sometimes I add a scoop more. For 24 oz. of water, I add 8 scoops (24 divided by 3), then I add one more scoop.
5. Turn the heat source to high. Since the water has already been heating, the vacuum process should occur in just a couple of minutes.
6. When the water heats to a certain temperature, all of the water will have risen to the upper bowl. It appears to be boiling, but it is not - it is just additional steam coming from the decanter to the upper bowl. Stir the coffee grounds to make sure they're evenly distributed.
7. This is where my process differs from most others. Others will advise you to now take the coffee maker off of the heat source which means the coffee in the upper bowl will almost immediately flow back down into the decanter. I prefer a stronger cup that tastes more like French Press, so I do not eliminate the heat source right away. I turn the heat down to low or med-low and continue to let the vapor rise into the upper bowl. I let the coffee brew for about 5 minutes...THEN I turn off the heat source and then the coffee flows down into the decanter.
8. Once all of the liquid has gone back down into the decanter (this takes only a few seconds), gently twist the upper bowl and lift it off the decanter. Place the upper bowl into the provided plastic "stem".
9. That's it. You should now have strong but clean-tasting coffee. A final note: I prefer this coffee over my Technovorm MochaMaster.
Summary: I know this process sounds tedious and time-consuming. It is not at all - I have merely described the steps in detail. After only a couple of times, you will be able to prepare the coffee very quickly - only the steep time adds minutes to the process.
Good luck, and enjoy your delicious coffee!!
1. Using the lines on the carafe, always fill it between the 6- and 8-cup marks. Because some of the water stays in the carafe during infusion, trying to brew less than six cups will result in not enough water rising into the infusion globe. Filling to more than eight cups will not leave enough air in the carafe to expand and force the water upward. (Remember, water does not expand very much as it is heated, but air does. This device depends on the air that is sealed into the carafe expanding during heating, forcing the water into the infusion globe. Also, remember the carafe is calibrated in tasse, which is about 120ml or 4 oz, so if you fill to the eight-cup line you will get two or three good-sized mugs of coffee.)
2. I use a diffusion plate on my gas stove and place the assembled pot on the plate over a medium flame. It takes about 10-12 minutes for the water to rise to the top and for the remaining water in the carafe to reach a merry boil. When I get to that full boiling point I remove the device from heat and place it on a cold surface.
3. Do not try to hurry things up by pre-heating the water before filling the carafe or by using a hotter flame. The reason for this is that no matter what kind of grinder you use, there are always very small fragments of ground coffee among the grains. Given sufficient time, these very small pieces entirely dissolve into the water. If you do not allow enough time for this to happen the tiny bits can plug the channels in the plastic filter piece, so that when you place it on the cold surface the finished coffee does not get sucked down into the carafe. I have never had a failure When I have started with cold filtered water from the refrigerator, used a medium flame under the diffusion plate, and let the carafe come to a full boil before removing it from the flame.
4. I use a hand-cranked burr grinder set so that most of the grains of ground coffee are about like granulated sugar. Most people grind their coffee too coarse.
5. If you want great coffee you have to use plenty of it. I use a kitchen scale and weigh the beans as I add them to the grinder. I have settled on 48g as the amount of coffee that gives me the strength I like when I fill the carafe to about seven cups (halfway between the 6 and 8-cup lines). If you like your coffee stronger use a bit less water, for weaker coffee use a bit more.
That is about all there is to it. This method is not for someone who is in a hurry to get out of the house in the morning, but if you have time to sit and enjoy this is a great way to go.

I only tend to drink one mug of coffee a day but I do like to have good coffee. I buy good quality beans and use a good grinder, so I want to make sure I'm brewing my coffee to get the best flavour. This machine allows me to do that.
It looks complicated but it's really not.
Bol a kettle (I use 300ml per mug and can do up to 3 mugs in this at one time). Pour the hot water in to the bottom jug, add the top bowl (with filter disc in place) and turn on heater (full whack). Once the water rises and is bubbling, turn heater down to very low - the water should stay in the top as long as there's a little heat. Add your coffee grounds, stir and wait for 1 min 45 seconds, stirring occasionally. Remove heat, wait for the coffee to fall back to the bottom jug.
Something that confused me when I first got it was that there were no filter papers or cloths for the plastic disc, but it seems they're not needed for this particular machine. I guess it's the design of the plastic disc, but just put it in place with the spring and you're good to go.
This really is a great bit of kit and if you like good coffee then you won't regret it. It's not really any more difficult to clean than a french press or percolator - of anything it's easier.
