I wish I could give this laptop 5 stars. It's light and sleek, has a great keyboard and a beautiful screen. It's fast and boots quickly. The battery on battery saver mode is excellent.
However, I'm taking off 4 stars for the combination of the touchscreen issue and tech support. The issue is described in other reviews, you get phantom clicks all over the touchscreen after waking the laptop from sleep. I went through the steps of updating bios and drivers as the ASUS rep recommended to other reviewers and all were already the latest versions. I talked to tech support chat with a gentleman who blatantly lied about knowing how to fix the issue after earlier in the chat saying he'd never seen the issue before. I spoke on the phone with a rep and the conversation didn't go much better. Finally I spoke with a supervisor who took me seriously and checked out the reviews on this page. He sent the issue to the engineers and they apparently have a fix but it can only be applied by physically opening the laptop and updating the firmware via the motherboard itself. To their credit, they did offer to pay to overnight it but the turnaround time from there is unclear and I don't have time to send it in since I use this laptop for work. I asked if they could just stand me a new updated laptop and I could return this one to them but they said it goes against their policy to do that.
They confirmed they will try to come up with a fix that can be downloaded, but there is no timeframe for that.
If this ever gets fixed I will update my review. In the meantime, I changed my power settings to never sleep, to either hibernate or power off. With fast boot times and a good battery, this isn't untenable for me, but is obviously not what you'd expect from a well regarded computer company.
However, the heat management is poor for a premium laptop ultrabook. The fan is constantly on. Even during idle, the fan is clearly audible. With just a bit load (~40% CPU), the fan too noisy to use to my standard.
In contrast, my 5-yr old first gen X1 carbon still works quietly. During idle, the fan is off, zero noise. While typing this review with a few background apps running, the fan is barely audible. Even at 100% CPU load, the max fan noise is pleasantly acceptable.
I purchased this unit hoping to replace the X1 carbon, but was a bit surprised by this unexpected issue, which I would expect any reputable manufacture to have figured out already. Had to return the unit, since the fan noise is simply unacceptable.
With the above being said, I cannot rule out the possibility that the unit I received has a faulty fan. If not, I sincerely hope Asus the best of luck for a fix to this annoying issue.
Let me be clear that this rating is based solely on the "ghost touches" on the screen, they are annoying. The computer it is beautiful, fast, the keyboard and track pad are awesome and overall it feels great to use... when the touchscreen is disabled...
UPDATE:
I received the replacement unit and it had the same problem, I updated windows, the drivers, contacted Asus, contacted Amazon, and I am asking for a refund. Luckily Amazon will pay for the shipping back to the US... But still I had to pay $75 to have this replacement unit to my country... At this point I am really frustrated with ASUS quality control, how is it possible that I received two defective units in less than a month?
