Some Nicely Convoluted Mysteries!

Some Nicely Convoluted Mysteries!
Meet Detective Inspector Tommy Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers. They have never worked together before Episode 1, and are rather thrown together out of desperation. As their bosses discuss beforehand:Superintendent Webberley: "She claims she's being excluded from all the good jobs. She can hardly go running to a tribunal if she's on a high profile case with one of our top officers."Chief Superintendent Hillier: "But aren't you creating more of a problem for yourself, risking a clash between Barbara Havers and Lynley?"Webberley: "Are we talking Lynley the Detective Inspector or Lynley the Eighth Earl of Asherton?"Hillier: "The 'fast track Oxford golden boy, arrogant, aristocratic ponce', I remember being one of her phrases."So Lynley and Havers are hardly expected to function as a team. As you start watching you could be forgiven for thinking Havers has no sense of humor and Lynley has no sense of proportion. They are part of Scotland Yard, but over the episodes they head outside of London may times. And once, even go to Rome.At almost 1 ½ hours an episode, there is a lot of time to explore the personal lives of Lynley and Havers as well as delivering multiple red herrings in the murder mysteries themselves. For me, there was too much time spent on the personal, or maybe it is more accurate to say that I got bored with Lynley's personal travails. Episode synopses are given in a comment to this review. The Inspector Lynley Mysteries aired in 6 series, from March 2001 through November 2007. This Complete Series totals 2130 minutes of show, which is over 35 hours total viewing in the 24 episodes (2-part pilot and 22 episodes). The episodes are presented in Dolby Digital 2 and English SDH subtitles are available on the episodes and the Bonus Feature. The subtitles do not always follow the dialogue exactly, but the differences are not great. The one Bonus Feature is divided into three parts, one appearing on the discs after episodes 10 (21 minutes), 16 (18 minutes) and 22 (18 minutes). The Bonus is "Inspecting the Inspector", an interview with Nathaniel Parker, who plays Lynley. I thought these were amusing, with Parker's stories interspersed with clips from the show. There were lots of terrific guest stars, such as Bill Nye and a young John McAvoy. He also talks about his character: "He's a Lord. He's working at the Met. Which, I remember we were criticized in the British press for that when it came out.... In fact, all those guys who criticized us didn't read the press report we released, which said, 'Did you know there were five Lords in the police force?' It's not an uncommon thing."The DVDs of the Complete Collection are not presented in the best way. All the discs are piled on top of each other on one spindle. Space saving but not as protective of your discs and is also inconvenient for changing discs."If you want to find out how someone died, find out how they lived. How they loved."Happy Reader

Marvel at the ancient buildings - universities, manors, crofts. Beautiful sweeping shots of the countryside. Decent plots and good acting.
Subtitles don't capture all the words, but are very good.

I first saw the series at the library. I enjoyed the banter between the two characters. On the product, as others had written the dvds come stacked. I purchased the Maxtek double cases and transferred the discs into them and that worked great. My only regret is the series finishes up so abruptly.

There are no problems with this collection. My only wish is that there were more episodes made. Someone made a comment about the packaging - Yes, all dvds are on a single spindle in a single case - That's not very convenient, but all disks were in good condition.

I have really enjoyed the Lynley series, and was delighted to get the complete set. The container was ion a single container, which was fine as long as you carefully turn the disks. The story line was excellent as usual, and I watched the series over a few nights. It is well worth getting.

A high class BBC series, many even follow the book. My only problem is the voices are sometimes hard to understand, the British accents, so I have to use subtitles. Standard def, not HD, used later on broadcast

video was good until they began to stall. Was hoping to go through the whole series with subtitles but had to go back to my discs without them. I can't understand why the company would release this series without ensuring that they all worked properly. I finally trashed the album and went to using another set that I had purchased earlieer. I don't like them as well becase they do not have subtitles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great series find!

I love the BBC mysteries. They are not focused on romance and sex like North American ones. Just plain and simple mystery leaving the rest to your imagination. Inspector Lynley is the aristocrat who doesn't want to be one and Havers is the working class who has worked to get where she is while taking care of ageing parents. Both are people no one else wants to work with yet they work well together. My only complaint is that they change actors on one character three times, from series to series. The first change was not too bad as it was good casting and you really had to look back to be sure it was a different character. The second time it was a completely different character in looks and manner. The plot lines are close to the books, although I admit I stopped reading the books when I got the videos. All in all I love this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very high quality British murder mystery series
Reviewed in Canada on October 10, 2021
Even though this TV series is abit dated when it comes to clothing and technical gadgets (the original programs aired from 2001 to 2008 in Britain) the character development and dynamics, plus complex plot structures are very well done. My only complaint is that the ‘bonus’ feature #1 mid-way through the programs has a number of spoiler alerts - so advise you to not watch any bonus features until the end. Any fan of good British detective mysteries will love this series.
