There are more tunes for you to discover, such as 'Stop Draggin' My Car Around' (the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"), and for the rock and rollers who couldn't stand the Disco Invasion, "Gotta Boogie" throws the latest dance craze into ridiculous relief--I wouldn't be surprised to hear it inspired Frank Zappa's "Dancin' Fool". Original works like "Happy Birthday" and "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead" show that Al's not just a mimic, but a true musically talented comedian in his own right. And there's "Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung" a twisted little short piece worthy of Tom Lehrer and perfect Doctor Demento material.
If you loved '80s pop and you like Weird Al, this will be an enjoyable trip down memory lane for you. If you're a Weird Al fan already, then like me you'll be glad you can get your hands on it now--it's been years that I've hoped this would show up as an MP3 download. Either way, the lack of polish doesn't prevent "Weird Al Yankovic" the album from putting "Weird Al Yankovic" the musician off to a good start. It's loads of fun, and it all only gets better from here.
Weird Al at his most original, an artist who learned to exploit his mediocrity to extreme effect, the Neil Diamond, the Barry Manilow, the Lionel Richie, of novelty music. Kids in Ogden, Utah went nuts on the city busses howling "Another One Rides the Bus" while I was finishing my business school diploma mill utterly useless associate degree. Weird Al really nailed that The Next Beatles Supergroup (that wasn't) radio hit that I found almost as nauseating as "You Light Up My Life," the Knack's "My Sharona," his parody, "My Bologna." My little brother's discovery of Weird Al the earworm almost makes up for subjecting me to being force-fed the entire '70s album catalog of his then-favorite rock star, Neil Diamond (his Columbia Records' Barry Manilow period hits for women in their '60s, like "You Don't Bring My Flowers" and "Heartlight").
The budget legacy CD reissue packaging on this title is pretty basic. The cover insert leaves out the original back cover of the vinyl Lp, which had a staged photo of Weird Al in an imagined concert setting. Otherwise, this CD is faithful to the original album.
I say this mostly, due to the poor production quality, but that's what makes the album sound so great. Also, the songs are a little more (again strange to say it) "edgy" with less focus on parodies and more non-PC lyrics.
Al's youthful growl/whine soars on rebellious tunes like "Happy Birthday" and "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead".
While his slimy, lounge-singer persona shines through on "The Checks In the Mail" and "Such A Groovy Guy".
And of course, "Mr. Frump in the Iron Lung" would be perfect if Al ever did an "Unplugged" with just Al, his accordion and a stool.
Although Al has only gotten better with time, this is a great start and just as enjoyable as any of his latter albums.
I suggest that devoted friends of Al and Dr. Demento fans buy this one.
