Product Description
The SureFire Maximus rechargeable variable-output LED headlamp delivers an amazing 1000 lumens of light--enough to illuminate your entire campsite. If that's too much light, you can dial it down to 1 lumen--or any level in between--for closer work, preserving your dark-adapted vision, or extending the runtime. A large knurled dial permits output control with one hand--even if it's gloved or numbed by cold. One hand can also aim the light right where you want it since the light assembly rotates up and down 90 degrees. The SureFire Maximus utilizes a high-performance LED and a custom reflector to produce a wide, diffused beam optimized for your natural field of vision, but which also provides impressive reach at its max output setting. Power comes from an integral rechargeable lithium-ion battery that can provide years of use; chargers for both wall-type AC outlets and 12-volt DC vehicle accessory outlets are included. A fuel gauge on the headlamp gives battery charge status, and a long-running SOS beacon provides an extra margin of safety if needed. Built from tough, lightweight magnesium, the SureFire Maximus thrives in harsh conditions. It's also comfortable to wear, thanks to its no-chafe fine-weave headband and moisture-wicking Breathe-O-Prene forehead pad.

Update: since my review, I contacted surefire and told them the battery seemed weak in my maximus. They said send it to sthem and gave me an RMA. So I did and I just got it back. It’s as bright as ever and the battery lasts a lot longer now. I’m not sure if they did anything else but the LED and lens is very clean and looks new while the brightness knob seems a little stiffer and has an indent at the end that I don’t remember. Whatever they did, it’s like a new light again. Very happy with my purchase.
Having owned a Surefire M3 Combat light, as well as a few Surefire Weapon lights I knew when I went to purchase a headlamp for a Black Bear Hunt in Northern NH/ME Surefire was the way to go! A quick visit to Surefire's website, and a few minutes later with Amazon Pime I had it 2 days later and love it!
Turning on the headlamp to full brightness at one point displayed 4 sets of raccoon eyes that appeared stunned after the 500 lumens hit them. I shined my Surefire M3 at a coyote from 2 stories above my backyard patio at one time and the animal appeared stunned for at least 25-35 seconds or so, similar effect here but a MUCH wider beam.
I never felt like the light would fall off or was not securely fastened enough to my head, but the 3 "point" harness lamps that go over the head as well would be one improvement Surefire could change on a newer revision or even offer as an optional accessory *hint hint!*.... The lamp allows for adjustment to focus the lamp vertically in case you want to avoid blinding your ATV driver/guide on a 4 wheeler while riding in tandem in the pitch dark up/down a mountain?! ;) One should always be aware of what one is targeting with this headlamp, but that's not a negative! :) Another optional accessory I wish Surefire offered as they do for most lights would be filters. Red is terrific at night, as initially hitting the Raccoons with a red filter covered Streamlight LED Strion did not appear to bother the raccoons, the Maximus did! :)
Everyone is always impressed with the performance of Surefire, it's the price that's hard to get by ;) but well worth it in my opinion.
Top reviews from other countries
-Up to 500 lumens output with intensity dial
-Lightweight & comfortable
-Light can be angled for best shine
-Rechargeable through electric outlet, no batteries required
-Long lasting & usable in a multitude of situations
CONS:
-On the expensive side, but nothing else compares to this product; sure beats having to change batteries and have less lumens
(1) It’s 1000 lumens (not 500 as stated in the ad) which is very bright. I personally cannot conceive of a situation where you’d need more lumens, but professionals or SAR volunteers may have different needs from me. You could pretty much cook a chicken at 50 yards just by looking at it with this torch on full.
(2) It’s simple. You don’t have lots of modes and buttons; you have adjustable tilt and a knob for brightness, and if you’re in deep trouble, you can make it flash SOS so people can find you and get temporarily blinded.
(3) It’s metal. I like that.
(4) It’s not made in china. I know some chinese stuff is more cost effective, but I have ethical objections to buying chinese stuff and ... well, they just talk crap and exaggerate everything. I can’t avoid buying chinese entirely (I’m typing this on an ipad), but I try to minimise.
Cons:
(1) lt’s freakin’ expensive. Stupid money. For this money it should be waterproof. However ...
(2) The rubber flap on the device will never stay shut, so it’ll let water in, it will corrode and the whole device will stop working. Have these people not heard of QA or even User Acceptance Testing? I have older SF devices which are absolutely bulletproof. This is a very poor design, and I can’t see a workaround. You have to charge it, so you can’t keep sealing it with silicon or similar. Red card #1.
(3) As others have pointed out, for nearly £300 you’d expect a top strap on this.
(4) It’s rechargeable ONLY. If it runs out, you have to plug it in to the mains, or carry your charger and find an inverter/generator. It’ll still last a long time, but if you’re away from civilisation for a few nights, you may well be absolutely stuffed. If there are a few of you, you can’t provide basic logistic support like one person having a backup battery/set that could power other colleagues’ torches. No, you have to carry another expensive torch, or just go home early. SF didn’t think this one through. Users may not be out over just the weekend. This means it cannot be considered a professional tool. Red card #2.
(5) It’s rechargeable (yes, again), so after a number of cycles, it will have to go back to SF for a new battery. Really? Ok for our cousins, but from the UK it’s nearly 2 weeks there and 2 weeks back, plus comms and repair time. I expect the battery would last a couple of years, but it should be in operable condition indefinitely. Whisky Tango Foxtrot?! Someone should look at the idea of using screw threads and O rings to access the battery, like on pretty much all the other SF torches (as an aside, I tested an old SF torch by leaving it under 1m water for 6 months. Worked perfectly afterwards. Yet this has a single sealed battery and a charging port that cannot keep light rain out). Not up to standard, guys.
I bought a second hand Minimus ‘Saint’ for £50 and sent it off to be refurbished at a cost of about $30. It may not cook chickens, but it takes the CR123A batteries I have in my pocket, so I can be away for as long as I want. No charger, no mains power required. And I’ve saved £200.
