Product Detail
Plantain flour is the product of dry pulverized plantain slices. Plantains are a staple food in the tropical regions of the world. It is rich in iron, Ascorbic acid(Vitamin C), carotene and other vitamins. Plantain flour is lower in calories than the regular all-purpose flour.
Plantain flour is a healthier substitute for wheat flour and the all-purpose flour because it doesn’t contain gluten which is the main protein found in wheat and barley, has negative effects on the body. Many people are unable to digest the gluten in wheat.
Plantain flour is popular in two Puerto Rican recipes, "pasteles" and "alcapurias". Both are pastries stuffed with meat, one is fried, the other is boiled. These pastries are made with plantain flour freshly grated plantains. If you're not into tropical dishes, try the recipe below:

You would think it would be too sweet for bread, but it isn't at all. The dark color when mixed with liquid isn't particularly appetizing, but once you eat the product, you forget all about that. I really love this flour from JEB FOODS. I'm going to order much more in the future.
I do notice that I need to eat at least some protein and fat with it, otherwise I tend to have a significant blood sugar crash (where I absolutely need to eat something) about 5 hours after eating. I get the same reaction with rice flour so it's not a product issue--I suspect it's carbohydrate-related. (I'm not a nutritionist, so you'll have to do your own research if that is a concern for you). I also haven't eaten regular all-purpose flour in many years so I'm unfortunately unable to compare to that.
All that said, I'm thankful to have this option!
♤ Above was my initial review but have since experimented with it by combining it's use with other products like grounded flax seed meal and whole chia seed and it came out pretty decent so I had to change from a 1 star to a 3 star.

The problem with this brand is the expense. You’re talking about a 7 1/2 dollars per pound. I can get 1 pound bags of plantain flour at the grocery store for two dollars less per pound. That’s a huge difference. This means I can buy 5 pounds of plantain flour at Giant for a little less cost than 4 pounds of this.
If you have the time you can make your own plantain flour. Green plantains slice up and dry very easily, then you grind it up in a food processor or a blender. And that’s a lot cheaper still.
